President Droupadi Murmu Inaugurates 7th India Water Week

  • President of India, Droupadi Murmu inaugurated the 7th edition of India Water Week (IWW) at the India Expo Centre in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh. The Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation, Government of India is organising the 7th edition of India Water Week (IWW) from 1st to 5th November with the motive to raise awareness, conserve and use water resources in an integrated manner.
  • The five day long programme is set to bring together experts, planners and stakeholders from across the globe. The focus is to build dialogue, action plan and addressing issues for sustainability of water resources development as well. In addition, it also aims for a management system in accordance with sustainable development goals. The theme of the 7th edition of India Water Week was "Water Security for Sustainable Development and Equity".

International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists

  • International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists is observed on November 2. The day came into existence when the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) passed a resolution in December 2013. The day draws attention to impunity, i.e., culprits going unpunished, to crimes against journalists. It took a couple of years of work and extensive lobbying from IFEX (formerly International Freedom of Expression Exchange) and others to get the Resolution for marking the day passed.
  • The date for IDEI was chosen to commemorate the assassination of two journalists in Mali on November 2, 2013. Al Qaida claimed responsibility for the death and kidnapping of French media workers Claude Verlon and Ghislaine Dupont. The culprits remain unapprehended to this day. Official figures show a grim picture for other journalists as well.

Zojila Day Commemorated at Zojila War Memorial near Drass

  • Zojila Day was commemorated on 1st November, at Zojila War Memorial near Drass. Zojila Day is observed to celebrate the gallant action by Indian troops in 'Operation Bison' in 1948 which was launched on the icy heights of Zojila pass, the gateway to Ladakh.
  • A solemn wreath-laying by Commander Drass and warriors of the Leh-based Fire and Fury Corps marks the commemoration of the day, to pay homage to the gallant Bravehearts, who have etched their names in history by liberating the Zojila pass from Pakistani Intruders.
  • Zojila day epitomizes the indomitable spirit of bravery and the 'Never Say Die' attitude of the Indian Army. This battle was also historic for the reason that tanks were used for the first time at such heights.

Rashtriya Ekta Diwas

  • National Unity Day or Rashtriya Ekta Diwas is celebrated in India on 31 October. It was introduced by the Government of India in 2014. The day is celebrated to mark the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel who had a major role in the political integration of India.
  • The day was introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014 with the theme of Run for Unity. Observing this day provides strength and resilience for the nation to hold on to unity, integrity, and security.

Nation celebrates 113th Birth anniversary of Homi Jehangir Bhabha

  • October 30, 2022  marked the 113th Birth anniversary of Indian nuclear physicist Homi Jehangir Bhabha who is also known as the father of the Indian nuclear program. He was born on 30 October, 1909 in Bombay, Bombay Presidency, British India (now Mumbai, Maharashtra, India).
  • His invaluable contributions to the field of science continue to inspire generations of young minds in the country. Homi J. Bhabha was born into a prominent wealthy Parsi family.
  • Homi J. Bhabha was the founding director and professor of physics at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR). He was also the founding director of the Atomic Energy Establishment, Trombay (AEET). 
  • It is now named the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre in his honour. TIFR and AEET were the cornerstones of Indian development of nuclear weapons and both were supervised by Bhabha as director. 
  • In 1942, Bhabha was awarded the Adams Prize and Padma Bhushan in 1954. In 1951 and 1953–1956, Bhabha was also nominated for the Nobel Prize for Physics.

World Psoriasis Day

  • World Psoriasis Day is observed every year on October 29th to make the general public aware of the important facts related to psoriasis and this disease and its treatment. 
  • In the year 2022, World Psoriasis Day is being observed with the theme of "Unloading Psoriatic Disease".
  • Psoriasis is a serious abnormal skin condition in which red and white scaly patches start developing on the patient's skin. 
  • These spots usually appear on the elbows, knees, scalp or lower back. These spots can sometimes be itchy or painful. At the same time, as the problem progresses, they may also feel burning sensations or swelling.
  • An Overactive Immune System is generally believed to be responsible for psoriasis. This problem affects men and women equally but its severity can vary from person to person.

World Cities Day

  • World Cities Day brings Urban October to an end on 31st October each year and was first celebrated in 2014. 
  • As with World Habitat Day, a global observance is held in a different city each year and the day focuses on a specific theme. 
  • A different city hosts the event each year. This year's global observance is planned in Shanghai, China under the theme "Act Local to Go Global". On December 27, 2013, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) established World Cities Day through a resolution. 
  • The first celebration took place on October 31, 2014. The second United Nations Conference on Human Settlements in 1976 influenced the UNGA's decision to establish World Cities Day.

World Thrift Day

  • World Thrift Day is celebrated worldwide on October 30 every year to promote the habit of savings. On October 30, 1934, at the first International Savings Bank Congress, the idea for World Savings Day, or Thrift Day, was proposed by the Italian Professor, Filipo Ravizza. The idea behind the day was to encourage the practice of saving money, especially through thrifting.
  • In some countries, World Thrift Day is observed as a public holiday.
  • Every year, a different theme for Thrift Day is announced based on which the celebrations for the day are planned. The World Thrift Day 2022 theme was "Saving prepares you for the future." This simple theme has a strong message for everyone who wishes to participate in the occasion.

International Animation Day

  • International Animation Day is celebrated on October 28 every year since 2002. It was in this year when the International Animated Film Association (ASIFA) declared International Animation Day (IAD) as a worldwide occasion to commend the speciality of animation. This day is celebrated in more than 50 distinct nations throughout the world. IAD was started by ASIFA, an individual from UNESCO.
  • The day is celebrated to commemorate the first public animation performance, Theatre Optique at the Musée Grévin in Paris. The moving picture technology utilised in the animated performance was developed by Charles-Emile Reynaud.
