World Day for Audiovisual Heritage

  • World Day for Audiovisual Heritage (WDAH) is celebrated on October 27 every year to highlight and promote the importance of such preservation. Audiovisual heritage refers to documents like film, sounds, radio, television programmes and other audio and video that are of socio-cultural importance and need preservation for posterity. Such documentations help us observe and understand the past, protects our memories and culture.
  • On October 27, 1980, the Recommendation for the Safeguarding and Preservation of Moving Images was adopted in the 21st General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) at Belgrade, Serbia.
  • This adoption occurred as a result of the efforts of the International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF) since the late 1970s. The 33rd session of UNESCO's General Conference in 2005 proclaimed October 27 as World Day for Audiovisual Heritage to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the 1980 recommendation mentioned above.
  • "Enlisting documentary heritage to promote inclusive, just and peaceful societies" was the theme for World Day for Audiovisual Heritage 2022. It refers to the importance of archiving visual and sonic information to preserve history for society's benefit and progress.

Raising Day of Indo Tibetan Border Police

  • The Indo-Tibetan Border Police Force (ITBP) observed its 61st Raising Day on October 24, 2022. The ITBF was raised in the aftermath of the Chinese aggression in 1962. It is one of the five bodies of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF).
  • The ITBP keeps an eye on the northern borders and protects them from border violations. The ITBP, from the dense forest of Arunachal Pradesh to the icy heights of the Himalayas, has performed with the utmost dedication. Their dedication and their commitment during times of disaster are extremely appreciable.
  • The ITBP was raised on October 24, 1962. The ITBP guards the 3,488 km long India-China border, which ranges from the Karakoram Pass in Ladakh to Jachep La in Arunachal Pradesh.

World Development Information Day

  • Each year the United Nations marks October 24 as World Development Information Day. This day is observed to create awareness towards the problems surrounding development in different nations and how to overcome them. The day is marked on the same day as United Nations Day, which was formed on October 24, 1945.
  • In 1972, the UN General Assembly established World Development Information Day with Resolution 3038 (XXVII). The international organisation hoped to make people aware of developmental problems that countries across the world continue to face. At the time, the standard of living was abysmally low in many countries. The day was established to increase international cooperation to solve developmental problems and start improving living standards across the globe.

United Nations Day

  • United Nations Day, on 24 October, marks the anniversary of the entry into force in 1945 of the UN Charter. With the ratification of this founding document by the majority of its signatories, including the five permanent members of the Security Council, the United Nations officially came into being. In 1945, 50 governments gathered to draft the UN Charter. They have struggled and accomplished great feats to uphold peace, protect human rights, and play a key role in bringing international justice.
  • The United Nations is an international organization founded in 1945. At present, there are 193 Member States. The UN is guided by the purposes and principles contained in its founding Charter which was signed in 1945. The United Nations Day commemorates the signing of that charter. According to their official website, the United Nations is "One place where the world's nations can gather together, discuss common problems, and find shared solutions."
  • The United Nations officially came into existence on 24 October 1945, when the Charter was ratified by China, France, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, the United States and by a majority of other signatories. The name "United Nations" was coined by the United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt and first used in the Declaration by United Nations of 1 January 1942, during Second World War.

National Ayurveda Day

  • National Ayurveda Day is observed on the occasion of Dhanwantari Jayanti (Dhanteras) every year since 2016. The 7th National Ayurveda Day was celebrated on October 23, 2022. It aims to introduce Ayurvedic principles of healing to the younger generation and to establish awareness among them.
  • Ayurveda has long been recognised as one of the most ancient and well-documented systems of medicine and is equally relevant today. Whether it is treating a healthy individual or one who is sick, it offers a distinctive holistic approach. Prevention of disease and promotion of health is the main aim of Ayurveda.
  • In 2022 National Ayurveda Day was celebrated under the theme of "Har Din Har Ghar Ayurveda".

Police Commemoration Day

  • Every year, India celebrates Police Commemoration Day on October 21 to honour the police personnel who sacrificed their lives while discharging their duties. The day remembers the sacrifices made by the 10 CRPF personnel who were martyred fighting for the country during a Chinese firing in 1959.
  • The idea of Police Commemoration Day owes its origin to an incident that took place on 21 October 1959, when 10 Indian policemen were killed by Chinese soldiers in a confrontation at Hot Springs in Aksai Chin, close to Ladakh. In order to maintain security in the border region and protect the Indo-Tibet border posts, members of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were stationed along the Indo-Tibetan Border Force amid increasing tensions between India and China.
  • The Annual Conference of Inspectors General of Police of States and Union Territories, which took place in January 1960, proclaimed October 21 as the National Police Commemoration Day.
  • Since 2012, the National Police Commemoration Day Parade has been held at the site of the Police Memorial in Chanakyapuri, Delhi.

National Solidarity Day

  • Every year on the 20th of October, India observes National Solidarity Day. This is a very special day for all of us. It was the day when our northern neighbour, who was a friend to us, launched an unexpected attack on our territory, which lasted about a month and ended when China declared a ceasefire on November 21, 1962.
  • In 1966, India was under the Prime Minister of Indira Gandhi. A Committee Constituting Prime Minister Indira Gandhi decided to dedicate October 20 as "National Solidarity Day" for the war remembrance, for honouring the soldiers who participated in the war and for honouring the soldier's family who sacrificed their life in the war. After that National Solidarity Day is observed yearly to honour the Armed Forces.

World Statistics Day

  • Every five years, World Statistics Day is marked on October 20. The day is celebrated to mark the importance of statistics in human lives. The day aims to create awareness about the achievements of official statistics that were based on the values of service, professionalism, and integrity.
  • The UN's Statistical Commission was formed in the year 1947. But the Commission adopted the Fundamental Principles of Official Statistics in 1994 only.
  • The decision to observe World Statistics Day was taken at the 41st session of the UN Statistical Commission in February 2010. The first World Statistics Day was celebrated on October 20, 2010.
