National Road Safety Week

  • Every year, the National Road Safety Week is celebrated from January 11 to 17. Organised by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the week intends to spread awareness around road safety, which is a major concern for authorities as well as the government.
  • The National Road Safety Week was celebrated for the first time in 1989. On March 15, 2010 the Centre sanctioned the National Road Safety policy, recommended by the Sunder Committee.
  • The theme for National Road Safety Week 2023 was "Parvah krenge surakshit rahenge".

National Human Trafficking Awareness Day

  • National Human Trafficking Awareness Day on January 11 raises awareness of the persistent issue of human trafficking. Though the entire month of January has already been recognized as National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month, this day is specifically dedicated to awareness and prevention of the illegal practice. This holiday is also separate from the World Day Against Trafficking Persons, as established by the United Nations. Since the Senate established this day of observance in 2007, it has drawn massive public support from individual donations to government-organized events. The horrific injustice of human trafficking can affect people of any race and background, and on this day we are all called to fight human trafficking wherever it exists.

World Hindi Day

  • World Hindi Diwas or Vishwa Hindi Divas is observed on January 10 annually. The day is dedicated to the Hindi language and its rich cultural heritage throughout the world.
  • Vishwa Hindi Divas is celebrated globally to commemorate the anniversary of the first time that Hindi was spoken in the United Nations General Assembly in 1949. The day has great significance because it was an opportunity for global Hindi speakers to promote the language and its literature.
  • In January 2006, was celebrated for the first time, as announced by then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Pravasi Bharatiya Divas

  • Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) or Non-Resident Indian Day is observed by the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India. The day is celebrated on January 9 to highlight the role of the Indian diaspora across the world and their contributions towards the country's progress. The celebration highlights the commitment of the Government of India to maintain and strengthen its ties with the overseas Indian community.
  • Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is observed on January 9 because it is on this day in 1951 that Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi returned from South Africa. He contributed greatly to the cause of India's struggle for freedom against the British and came to be known as the "Father of the Nation."
  • Pravasi Bharatiya Divas was established in the year 2000, but was first celebrated officially in 2003, in New Delhi. Initially, the day was celebrated annually till 2015, following which the event became a biennial.
  • A particular city is chosen, by The Ministry of External Affairs chooses a city to host the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas celebrations and for the year 2023, Indore was chosen to host the event, which will run from January 8 to 10.

World Day of War Orphans

  • The World Day of War Orphans is observed on January 6 every year. The day aims to raise awareness about children who have been orphaned due to wars. The objective of the day ensures to voice out the predicament of war orphans and highlight the emotional, social, and physical challenges children face while growing up.
  • The World Day of War Orphans was initiated by the French organization, SOS Enfants en Detresses. UNICEF estimates that there are nearly 9,00,000 children in the Northeast, all of whom have been seriously affected by the war, either through a lack of education, food, shelter, or direct injury.
  • The theme for World Day of War Orphans 2023 was "Standing Up for War-Affected Children".

World Braille Day

  • In remembrance of the birth of Louis Braille, the inventor of Braille, January 4 is marked as World Braille Day. The day also recognizes that people with visual impairments should have the same access to human rights as everyone else.
  • The date for the event was chosen by the United Nations General Assembly via a proclamation in November 2018. The first World Braille Day was celebrated on January 4, 2019.
