Data Privacy Day

  • Data Protection Day, or Data Privacy Day, is celebrated on January 28. The aim is to create more awareness about the right to data protection and the various ways in which people can keep their data more safe. The world is slowly but steadily moving towards digitisation, but this also means our data is becoming more vulnerable. This year (2023), leading organisations are expected to invest heavily in updating more robust cybersecurity policies and procedures, enabling security automation, and monitoring attack surfaces.
  • The theme Data Privacy Day 2023 was 'Think Privacy First'.

International Holocaust Remembrance Day

  • The United Nations designated January 27 as the International Holocaust Remembrance Day in honour of six million Jews killed in the Holocaust and millions of other Nazism victims under the Hitler regime between 1933 and 1945.
  • The Holocaust, also called as the Shoah, was Hitler's "Final Solution" for eliminating Jews within Germany's grasp. By the end of the heinous act, around two-thirds of Europe's Jewish population had been killed, according to Holocaust encyclopedia.
  • The UN General Assembly in its 42nd plenary session adopted the 60/7 resolution and declared January 27 as International Holocaust Remembrance Day on November 1, 2005.
  • January 27 was chosen as the date as it was this day when the Auschwitz concentration camp, the biggest concentration camp in Germany was liberated by the Soviet Army in 1945.
  • The theme for International Holocaust Remembrance Day 2023 was "Home and Belonging".

International Customs Day

  • The International Customs Day (ICD) is observed on January 26 every year. The day is celebrated to recognise the role of customs officials and agencies and focus on the working conditions and challenges that customs officers face in their jobs. This year (2023), the theme chosen by WCO for ICD is 'Scaling up Customs Digital Transformation by Embracing a Data Culture and Building a Data Ecosystem'.
  • The day was instituted by the World Customs Organization (WCO) to commemorate the day in 1953 when the inaugural session of the Customs Cooperation Council (CCC) was held in Brussels, Belgium. In 1994 the CCC was renamed World Customs Organization (WCO).

Himachal Pradesh Statehood Day

  • Prime Minister NarendraModi greeted people of Himachal Pradesh on the state's formation day.
  • Hardworking people of the state, full of natural beauty, have also been dedicated to serving the country.
  • Himachal Pradesh celebrated its 53rd Statehood Day with full enthusiasm across the state on January 25, 2023. It was on this day in 1971 that Himachal Pradesh became the 18th state of India.

National Voters Day

  • Every year, India celebrates the National Voters Day on January 25 to encourage each and every vote in the country to participate in the electoral process. The idea of marking this day is not very old, tracing its origin to 2011.
  • The country marked its first-ever National Voters Day in 2011. The idea behind the celebration was to encourage more young voters to take part in the electoral process. The Union government back then, under the leadership of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, approved a proposal of the law ministry to this end.
  • The theme for National Voters Day 2023 was 'Nothing Like Voting, I Vote for Sure'.

National Tourism Day

  • India celebrates National Tourism Day on January 25 every year. The main purpose of celebrating National Tourism Day is to promote the tourism sector in India which plays a vital role in the economic growth and development of India.
  • It is difficult to say when January 25 was officially declared National Tourism Day. Although in 1948, a Tourist Traffic Group was constituted to promote tourism and in 1958, a department was created by the Ministry of Tourism and Communication. It can be deduced that the Government of India started to celebrate National Tourism Day since this time.

National Girl Child Day

  • On January 24, India celebrates National Girl Child Day. This day was established in 2008 by the Ministry of Women and Child Development. The goal of National Girl Child Day is to highlight the prejudice and injustice that girl children face. This day also encourages awareness of women's rights in our country.
  • According to the women and child development ministry, National Girl Child Day is meant to create awareness about the rights of a girl, support the nation's girl children, eliminate gender biases, and emphasise the importance of education, health, and nutrition. The national holiday is observed nationwide by holding a variety of events to honour girls.

International Day of Education

  • The International Day of Education is annually celebrated on January 24. This year (2023) marked the fifth year of celebration.
  • January 24 was declared the International Day of Education by a resolution that was passed by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on December 3, 2018. Thereafter, on January 24 2019 the first International Day of Education was celebrated.
  • The theme for International Day of Education 2023 was 'invest in people, prioritise education'.
