International Tiger Day

  • International Tiger Day is observed globally on July 29 every year. The day is celebrated to raise awareness among individuals, organisations, and governments about the importance of the conservation of tigers. This day aims to encourage all to take appropriate action to save the wild cats. As per World Wildlife Fund, approximately 95 per cent of the population of tigers has declined in the last 150 years.
  • The day seeks to protect and expand tiger habitats apart from preserving these species. International Tiger Day is observed by many international organisations, including the World Wide Fund for Nature, the International Fund for Animal Welfare, and the Smithsonian Institution. The current wild cat population is 3,900.
  • International Tiger Day was introduced in 2010 after it was discovered that 97 per cent of tigers had disappeared in the past century, with only about 3,000 remaining. Since tigers were on the verge of extinction, a number of countries signed an agreement at the Saint Petersburg Tiger Summit in Russia in 2010 to prevent the situation from worsening. Tigers are found in only 13 countries of the world, while 70 per cent of its tigers are in India only.

World Hepatitis Day

  • World Hepatitis Day is observed on July 28 every year with the primary objective of raising awareness about hepatitis on a global level.
  • World Hepatitis Day, initially observed on May 19, was later moved to July 28 in 2010. The World Hepatitis Alliance, established in 2007, organized the first community-driven World Hepatitis Day in 2008. This decision came after the World Health Assembly decided to honour the birthday of Dr. Baruch Samuel Blumberg, the American physician credited with discovering Hepatitis B in the 1960s.
  • World Hepatitis Day is an opportunity to step up national and international efforts on hepatitis, encourage actions and engagement by individuals, partners and the public and highlight the need for a greater global response as outlined in the WHO's Global hepatitis report of 2017.
  • The theme for World Hepatitis Day 2023 is 'One life, One liver'.

World Nature Conservation Day

  • World Nature Conservation Day is celebrated annually on July 28. The main purpose of celebrating this day is to create awareness among people about the importance of the natural environment and its resources.

CRPF Raising Day

  • The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), observed its 85th Raising Day on 27th of July 2023. The day celebrates the immense and unparalleled contribution of the force in upholding the unity, integrity, and sovereignty of the nation. CRPF is India's largest Central Armed Police Force, which operates under the authority of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
  • CRPF came into existence as the 'Crown Representative's Police' on 27th of July 1939. After Independence, it became the Central Reserve Police Force on the enactment of the 'CRPF Act' on December 28, 1949, which constituted CRPF as an armed force of the Union.
  • After Independence, CRPF contingents were tasked to check infiltration and trans-border crimes in Kutch, Rajasthan, and Sindh borders. They were, subsequently, deployed on the Pakistan border in Jammu & Kashmir following Pakistan's infiltration.
  • During the 1962 Indo-China war, the force once again assisted the Indian Army in the state of Arunachal Pradesh. Further, in the 1965 and 1971 Indo-Pak wars, CRPF provided shoulder-to-shoulder support to the Indian Army, both on the Western and Eastern borders.
  • CPRF was the first paramilitary force in India, which sent its forces in the United Nations Peacekeeping Missions. For the first time, 13 companies of CRPF including a detachment of women were airlifted to join the Indian Peacekeeping Force in Sri Lanka to fight the militant cadres.

National Refreshment Day

  • National Refreshment Day is observed on the fourth Thursday of July every year to remind people that they can take out time from their busy schedules and enjoy themselves. In 2023, it was observed on July 27.
  • The history of the National Refreshment Day dates back to 2015 when Traveller Beer (beer company) celebrated this day by announcing a new variety of beer in the market. The company created the first National Refreshment Day to make customers relish by serving them a new variety of beer.
  • The American craft beer company, based in Burlington, Vermont, was founded in 2012 and is known for producing creative beer products by mixing European shandy and American craft beer. The company decided to celebrate National Refreshment Day on the fourth Thursday of July.
  • Since then, people living in the northern hemisphere started observing National Refreshment Day as temperatures continue to go up in the region at this time of the year. It becomes necessary to de-stress and detoxify oneself on any hot day by enjoying refreshing drinks.

International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem

  • The International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem is observed annually on July 26. Its purpose is to increase global understanding of the significance of mangrove ecosystems as distinct, precious, and delicate environments. The day also seeks to advocate for sustainable practices in managing, safeguarding, and utilizing these ecosystems.

Kargil Vijay Diwas

  • Kargil Vijay Diwas is celebrated all across the country on July 26 every year. The day commemorates the victory of the Indian armed forces in the Kargil War fought against Pakistan. The day is observed to pay tribute and to honour the bravery and sacrifice of the soldiers in the war of 1999. The operation that took place during the war is also known as Operation Vijay.
  • The year 2023, marked the 24th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas.
  • The armed conflict between Pakistan and India started after the Pakistani troops intruded into the Indian territory in the Kargil district of then Jammu and Kashmir (now in Ladakh UT). The Kargil War continued from May to July 1999.
  • Indian Army launched 'Operation Vijay' after the first infiltration was reported by local shepherds on May 3, 1999. The target of Operation Vijay was to recapture the Indian territory along the LoC, which was occupied by the Pakistani infiltrators. Indian Air Force launched the airstrike on May 26 under operation Safed Sagar to support the Indian Army.
  • On July 26, 1999, Indian Army declared Operation Vijay a success after recapturing all the military posts in Kargil that were taken over by Pakistani infiltrators.
