International Youth Day

  • International Youth Day is celebrated every year on August 12 to raise awareness of the challenges and opportunities facing young people around the world.
  • This day is designated by United Nations and every year the youth organisations and members of the UN Inter-Agency decide the theme.
  • The day was first proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1999, following a recommendation made by the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth in Lisbon, Portugal.
  • The goal of International Youth Day is to promote the participation of young people in decision-making processes at all levels, as well as to highlight the importance of youth in building a more peaceful and sustainable future.
  • The theme for International Youth Day in 2023 is 'Green Skills for Youth: Towards a Sustainable World'.

World Lion Day 2023

  • Every year, the global event of World Lion Day is observed on August 10 across the globe to raise awareness about the importance and protection of lions. Known as 'King of the Jungle', lions are an integral part of the environment and are posed with numerous threats such as loss of habitat, hunting, poaching and many others.
  • The occasion of World Lion Day is observed with the aim to raise awareness about the present predicament of lions and how the number of lions has reduced dramatically in recent times. It is important to educate people about the reasons for the threats faced by lions.
  • The history of World Lion Day dates back to the year 2013 when Dereck and Beverly Joubert, the founders of the Big Cat Rescue, the world's largest accredited sanctuary dedicated to lions drew attention to the declining population of lions across the world. The couple approached National Geographic in 2009 and joined hands with them for the partnership of the Big Cat Initiative (BCI). Then in 2013, World Lion Day was formulated to raise awareness about the conservation issues of lions.

NATIONAL HANDLOOM DAY: PM MODI LAUNCHES REPOSITORY PORTAL FOR INDIAN TEXTILES AND CRAFT

  • The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, presided over the 9th National Handloom Day celebrations at Bharat Mandapam, Pragati Maidan, Delhi today and launched the e-portal 'Bhartiya Vastra evam Shilpa Kosh - A Repository of Textiles & Crafts' developed by the National Institute of Fashion Technology. The Prime Minister also visited the exhibition showcased on the occasion and interacted with the weavers.
  • Addressing the gathering of over 3000 weavers and artisans from across the country, the Prime Minister highlighted the contribution of the handloom industry of India and said that the confluence of old and new defines the new India of today. "The India of today is not just 'Local for Vocal' but also providing a global platform to take it to the world", he said. Highlighting the Swadeshi Movement, the Prime Minister said that it was not only limited to boycotting foreign-made textiles but a source of inspiration for the independent economy of India. He said that it was a movement to connect the weavers of India with the people, and this was the inspiration behind the government choosing this day as National Handloom Day.

Jharkhand Adivasi Mahotsav to kick off in Ranchi from Wednesday

  • The Jharkhand Adivasi Mahotsav - 2023 is all set to kick off in Ranchi from Wednesday, on International Day of the World's Indigenous People, officials familiar with the matter said.
  • The two-day festival aims to showcase the tribal tradition, art and culture, lifestyle, music and dance, besides holding seminars that would be attended by scholars and celebrities from across the county.
  • The tribal festival was organised for the first time in 2022 , but the scale of event has been magnified this year by promoting it across the country, and ensuring participation of guests from across the country

International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples

  • The origins of observing this day stem from a worldwide movement aimed at acknowledging the rights and valuable contributions of indigenous peoples. Despite constituting around 6% of the global population, indigenous communities are frequently marginalized, even though they possess rich cultural diversity.The concept of designating a day to honor indigenous people's started within the United Nations. The primary goal was to safeguard the rights of these populations and ensure their voices received global recognition.In December 1994, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution to officially recognize and commemorate the International Day of the World's Indigenous People.
  • The theme chosen for World Tribal Day 2023 centers around "Indigenous Youth as Agents of Change for Self-determination."

81th anniversary of Quit India movement

  •  August 8 is a noteworthy day in Indian history as it marks the start of The Quit India Movement also known as the India August Movement or Bharat Chodo Andolan which was launched at the Bombay session of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) by Mahatma Gandhi on this date in 1942.
  • As we mark the anniversary of this national event, later termed 'August Kranti' due to the month of its occurrence, here are some key points to revisit and know about it. While it was introduced on August 8, the movement was started a day later on August 9, 1942.
  • The Quit India Movement came into being with a speech by Mahatma Gandhi. At Mumbai's Gowalia Tank Maidan (popularly known as August Kranti Maidan), the freedom fighter delivered his speech on August 8. Several other leaders and citizens were gathered there on the day and the following one.
  • Gandhiji gave his iconic slogan "Do or Die" in his speech.

Union Finance Minister lays Foundation stone for Adichanallur Museum.

  • Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday, laid the foundation stone for the establishment of a museum in Adichanallur, to showcase artefacts from ancient Tamil civilization, excavated from this archaeological site.
  • The excavation, led by Regional Director of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) Arun Raj, has unearthed burial urns, metal and bronze products used by ancient Tamils and a gold diadem. Subsequently, the Union Government decided to set-up an onsite museum at this hotspot of ancient Tamil civilization and came out with its decision on setting up the museum in 2021.
  • The excavated artefacts, mostly burial urns, have been placed in a toughened glass-covered pit at the 'B' Site in the Adichanallur 'parambu' in an 'as is where is' condition so that the visitors standing above the pit can easily see these utensils and other products used by ancient Tamils 3,000 years ago. After taking a look at the pit through the glass, Ms. Sitharaman carefully got into the pit along with Thoothukudi MP Kanimozhi, to take a closer look at the burial urns.

Quit India Movement Day

  •  Quit India Movement Day is observed on 8th August every year to commemorate the launch of the Quit India Movement on 8th August 1942 by Mahatma Gandhi. Also known as the August Movement or August Kranti, it was a significant civil disobedience movement against British colonial rule in India during World War II.
  • During the Quit India Movement, Mahatma Gandhi gave the famous call of "Do or Die" to the Indian people, urging them to demand complete independence from British rule. The movement aimed to mobilize the masses and invoke non-violent resistance to achieve freedom.

Hiroshima Day

  • Hiroshima Day is observed every year, on August 6, to spread awareness of the horrific effects of the atom bomb blasts and to promote peace politics. On this day in 1945, the United States dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, a Japanese city during World War II. The atomic blast was massive and destroyed 90 per cent of the city and killed thousands of people. It killed almost 20,000 soldiers, and 70,000 to 126,000 civilians. Three days later, another city in Japan, Nagasaki was bombed leading to the death of 80,000 people. This was the first time that a nuclear bomb was used in a war other than testing. Since then, no atom bombs or nuclear bombs were used in any war.
  • After Germany surrendered to the allied forces in May 1945, World War II continued in Asia as the forces fought the Japanese Empire. The US sanctioned the Manhattan Project and developed nuclear bombs called Little Boy, which was dropped on Hiroshima, and Fat Man, which was detonated over Nagasaki.
