National Thermal Engineer Day

  • Every year July 24 is observed as National Thermal Engineers Day to celebrate the contribution of thermal engineers to society. Thermal energy is defined as the energy contained inside a system that manages its temperature.
  • The day was established in 2014 by Advanced Thermal Solutions Inc (ATS), a US-based private company working in the area of thermal energy regulation and electronic packaging solutions. The day was initiated by ATS to mark the hard work of the thermal engineers along with the software and electronic industries where the thermal engineer's work is neglected.

Income Tax Day or Aaykar Diwas

  • The Income Tax department observes July 24 every year as Income Tax Day or 'Aaykar Diwas', to commemorate the introduction of provision of income tax in the country. This year (22023) is the 163rd anniversary of Income Tax Day.
  • On July 24, 1860, Sir James Wilson introduced income tax for the first time in India. Wilson did this to compensate for the losses suffered by the British regime during the first war of independence in 1857. 'Aaykar Diwas' was celebrated for the first time on July 24, 2010, to mark 150 years of income tax in India.
  • Since income tax was first levied as a duty in the year 1860 and the authority to levy that duty came into force on July 24 of that year, it was proposed to celebrate this day as Income Tax Investiture Day.
  • Headquartered in New Delhi, the Income Tax department is responsible for direct tax collection for the Government of India. It functions under the Department of Revenue in the Ministry of finance, and is headed by an apex body called the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT).

National Broadcasting Day

  • On July 23, India commemorates National Broadcasting Day to honour the profound influence of radio in our lives. This significant day marks the inception of India's first-ever radio broadcast, known as 'All India Radio (AIR)'. To celebrate this occasion, All India Radio (AIR) organized a symposium in New Delhi focused on discussing the role of broadcasting in shaping a modern India and exploring new mediums of communication.
  • Radio broadcasting in India commenced as private initiatives in 1923 and 1924, with the establishment of radio clubs in Bombay, Calcutta, and Madras (now Chennai). However, due to financial constraints, these stations had to shut down.
  • Subsequently, a Broadcasting Service was introduced on an experimental basis in July 1927 in Bombay and a month later in Calcutta, through an agreement between the Government of India and a private company called the Indian Broadcasting Company Ltd.
  • In response to public outcry over the closure of the Indian Broadcasting Company, the Government took charge of broadcasting on April 1, 1930, renaming it the Indian State Broadcasting Service (ISBS). Initially experimental, it became permanently under government control in 1932.
  • A new radio station was established in Delhi in 1936. On June 8 of the same year, the Indian Broadcasting Service was rebranded as All India Radio (AIR), with a fresh signature tune. The Delhi station eventually grew into the core of national-level broadcasting.

National Parents' Day (Fourth Sunday in July)

  • National Parents' Day in celebrated on the fourth Sunday in July every year (July 23 in 2023).
  • The day is marked to appreciate the efforts of parents and their lifelong sacrifice.
  • National Parents' Day is celebrated in many different countries all over the world. It was proclaimed an official day by the United Nations, yet it has also been honoured in the United States ever since 1994. This is when it was signed into law by President Bill Clinton. The day was established as one for recognizing, supporting, and uplifting the role of parents when it comes to raising children around the world. It was Trent Lott, a Republican Senator, who actually introduced the bill.

World Brain Day

  • World Brain Day is celebrated globally on July 22nd every year. The day promotes education, research, and support for individuals affected by brain-related conditions.
  • On July 22, 1957, the World Federation of Neurology (WFN) was established. The idea of observing July 22 as World Brain Day originated from a proposal put forth by the Public Awareness and Advocacy Committee. This proposal was presented during the World Congress of Neurology (WCN) Council of Delegates meeting on September 22, 2013, and it received a warm and enthusiastic response from the delegates. Following this positive reception, the Board of Trustees approved the concept in their meeting held in February 2014, making it an annual event to be celebrated on the same date each year.
  • The theme for World Brain Day 2023 was 'Brain Health and Disability: Leave No One Behind'.

Pi Approximation Day

  • Pi Approximation Day is observed on July 22 (22/7 in the day/month date format), since the fraction 22⁄7 is a common approximation of π, which is accurate to two decimal places and dates from Archimedes. A number of people celebrate March 14 as Pi Day as the date lines up in the numbers of the famous constant 3.14. However, such a format of writing dates is mostly followed in the US.
  • Pi (π) was known and used ancient times approximated for almost 4000 years. The ancient Babylonians also calculated the area of the circle by taking three times the square of its radius which gave the value of pi equals to three. Archimedes of Syracuse (287–212 BC), one of the greatest mathematicians of the ancient world was the first person to do the calculation of π. Archimedes tried to show that the value π is between 3 1/7 and 3 10/71.
  • Pi Approximation Day is observed annually to celebrate the usage of the mathematical constant π (pi). Pie day is observed on March 14 and Pi Approximation Day is observed on July 22.
  • Pie Day was founded by Larry Shaw in the year 1988. On November 2019 United Nations designated Pi Day as the International Day of Mathematics.

International Moon Day

  • International Moon Day is celebrated on July 20 every year to mark the anniversary of the day when humans first landed on the Moon as part of NASA's Apollo 11 mission. Astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the Moon in a location that they then named Tranquility Base, on July 20, 1969.
  • The General Assembly declared International Moon Day, a United Nations-designated international day to be observed annually on July 20, in its resolution 76/76 on International cooperation in the peaceful uses of outer space, in 2021.
  • International Moon Day marks the anniversary of the first landing by humans on the Moon as part of the Apollo 11 lunar mission.
  • The celebrations will also consider the achievements of all States in the exploration of the Moon and raise public awareness of sustainable Moon exploration and utilisation.

International Chess Day

  • Every year July 20 is observed as International Chess Day to commemorate the establishment of Fédération Internationale des Échecs (FIDE) or International Chess Federation in 1924.
  • The idea to celebrate this day as the International Chess Day was proposed by UNESCO, and it has been celebrated as such since 1966, after it was established by FIDE. FIDE, which has 181 chess federations as its members, organizes chess events and competitions around the world on this day. On December 12, 2019, the UN General Assembly unanimously approved a resolution recognizing the day.

Nelson Mandela International Day

  • Nelson Mandela International Day or Nelson Mandela Day is observed on July 18 every year. The United Nations (UN) had in 2009 declared July 18 as Nelson Mandela Day to honour Nelson Mandela, a South African anti-apartheid activist who served as the first President from 1994 to 1999. Mandela was the first black head of state and was the first elected President in a fully democratic election in South Africa. The Day also enlightens his transitional steps to defeat multiracial democracy in South Africa.
  • The day was first celebrated on July 18, 2010, the 92nd birthday of Mandela, to honour the achievements of the anti-apartheid leader.
  • The significance of International Nelson Mandela Day lies in its celebration of the life of an inspirational leader who dedicated his life to fighting for peace and justice. It is also an opportunity for everyone to take action towards creating a more equal and just world.
  • The theme of Nelson Mandela International Day 2023 is 'The Legacy Lives on Through You: Climate, Food and Solidarity'.
