Young Indian Grandmaster R. Pragganandhaa Wins Prestigious Reykjavik Open Chess Tournament

  • Young Indian Grandmaster, R Pragganandhaa won the prestigious Reykjavik Open chess tournament in Reykjajvik, Iceland with 7.5 points from nine rounds. The 16-year-old Pragganandhaa defeated compatriot GM D Gukesh in the final round to emerge sole winner.
  • The highly-rated Indian remained unbeaten through the nine rounds and finished with wins over Matthieu Cornette of France and Gukesh in the last two rounds. He had recently hogged the limelight after stunning world No.1 Magnus Carlsen in an online tournament.

Netherlands lift fourth FIH Junior Women's Hockey World Cup title, beating Germany 3-1

  • The Netherlands lifted their fourth FIH Junior Women's Hockey World Cup title after beating Germany 3-1 in the final at Potchefstroom, South Africa. Giving an early lead to the Netherlands, Danique van der Veerdonk scored first goal in seven minutes. Then, Germany's Sophia Schwabe equalized the score in 32nd minute. Just after two minutes, Tessa Beetsma restored her Dutch team's lead to 2-1.
  • Beetsma then bagged her brace in 44th minute. With a superb performance, the Netherlands conceded their first goal of the tournament in summit clash. Till the final, the Netherlands had scored 46 goals and conceded none. Earlier, England defeated India 3-0 in the shoot-out after a 2-2 draw to claim the bronze medal in the third-place match.

Odisha CM Unveils Logo of 2023 Men's Hockey World Cup

  • Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik unveiled the logo of 2023 FIH Men's Hockey World Cup, to be held in the twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Rourkela.
  • The prestigious quadrennial tournament is scheduled from January 13 to 29.
  • Hockey India and its official partner Odisha will host the marquee event for the second consecutive time in the country after 2018.
  • The 15th edition of the showpiece will be staged in Bhubaneswar and Rourkela, where the country's largest hockey stadium is being constructed. The stadium will have a seating capacity of 20,000.

Rohit Sharma Becomes 2nd Indian after Virat Kohli to Score 10,000 Runs in T20

  • Rohit Sharma has became only the second Indian after Virat Kohli to score 10 thousand runs in the T20 cricket. India and Mumbai Indians skipper achieved this milestone during the IPL 2022 match of Mumbai Indians against Punjab Kings in Pune.
  • Rohit Sharma became the seventh batter overall to reach the 10 thousand runs in T20s. West Indian legend Chris Gayle is leading the list of run-getters with 14,562 runs to his name followed by Pakistan's Shoaib Malik (11698), West Indies Kieron Pollard (11474), Australia's Aaron Finch (10499), Virat Kohli (10379) and Australia's David Warner (10373) as of April 2022.

FIFA U17 Women's World Cup: Goa, Bhubaneswar, Mumbai to Host Tournament in October

  • World football body, FIFA named Bhubaneswar, Goa and Navi Mumbai as the host cities for the upcoming FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup to be held in October 2022. FIFA also announced that the draw for the marquee tournament will take place in Zurich on June 24.
  • In order to ensure the safety of the players involved and the other participants in the tournament, Bhubaneswar's Kalinga Stadium, Goa's Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and Navi Mumbai's DY Patil Stadium have been announced as the three venues that will welcome some of the brightest emerging talents and future stars of women's football.
  • Following the cancellation of the 2020 edition of the event due to the COVID-19 pandemic, FIFA, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and the Local Organising Committee (LOC) confirmed the host cities after undertaking a comprehensive review and consultation process.

Shooting, Wrestling Not Part of 2026 Commonwealth Games

  • In a big jolt to India, the host of the Commonwealth Games 2026 dropped wrestling, shooting and archery from its initial sports programme list.
  • The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) confirmed Victoria in Australia as the host of the 2026 edition. This would be the first edition to be held across several cities, including Melbourne, Geelong, Bendigo, Ballarat and Gippsland.
  • The disciplines that the organising committee has included in the initial list are aquatics, athletics, badminton, boxing, beach volleyball, T20 cricket, cycling, gymnastics, hockey, lawn bowls, netball, rugby sevens, squash, table tennis, triathlon and weightlifting. However, the organisers have clarified that they will add a few more disciplines later this year.

FIFA Gets into Streaming Platform Business with Own Soccer Version

  • FIFA is getting into the streaming platform business with a soccer version of Netflix and Amazon Prime. The service is free and largely featuring documentaries and some live games at the launch but it could eventually be a way for FIFA to broadcast World Cup matches itself at a cost.
  • While increasingly positioning itself as a rival to existing media companies, FIFA+ will also be used by the governing body to promote its sponsors.
  • The launch could see FIFA shift content off YouTube that it has previously used to broadcast classic matches and sports politics events. The recent FIFA Congress in Qatar was not streamed on the long-standing video sharing website unlike previously.

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah Appointed as Member Board Representative of ICC Cricket Committee

  • BCCI secretary Jay Shah was appointed to the ICC Cricket Committee as the Member Board Representative while Mahela Jayawardene was reappointed as Past Player representative.
  • In line with a previous recommendation from the ICC Men's Cricket Committee, the CEC agreed that more neutral match officials should be utilised as travel restrictions are lifted while building on the success of the use of home umpires.

Boxers Get a Gold Rush in Thailand

  • Indian boxers Govind Sahani (48 kg), Ananta Pralhad Chopade (54 kg) and Sumit (75 kg) struck gold at the Thailand Open in Phuket, notching up comprehensive wins in their final bouts.
  • Sahani and Sumit dominated their bouts from start to finish and won with 5-0 margins against local pugilists Natthaphon Thuamcharoen and Peetapat Yeasungnoen, respectively.
  • Chopade, on the other hand, displayed a good mix of aggression and defence to topple Thai boxer Ritthiamon Saengsawang by a unanimous decision.
  • The Indian contingent bettered its last edition's haul of eight medals — bringing home 10 medals, including three gold, four silver, and three bronze, with three boxers yet to fight in their final bouts.

1st Khelo India National Ranking Women Archery Tournament Held in Jamshedpur

  • The Sports Authority of India approved a total amount of Rs. 75 Lakh to host the Khelo India National Ranking Women Archery Tournament over six phases. TATA Archery Academy, Jamshedpur (Jharkhand) hosted the first phase of the tournament on April 12 and 13.
  • The tournament was held across the Recurve and Compound events in the senior, Junior and Cadet Categories, and was conducted as per the World Archery Rules. The Archery Association of India (AAI), in collaboration with the Jharkhand Archery Association and TATA Steel, are organising the tournament.
  • The six Women's National Ranking tournaments will be held every alternate month with the final phase scheduled for December 2022. The cumulative points of the 5 phases shall be calculated to arrive at the ranking of the top 16 archers for the final phase in December wherein the top 16 archers shall be given cash awards, amounting to a total of Rs. 37.5 Lakh.

Charleston Open: Sania Mirza-Lucie Hradecka Lose in Final

  • Sania Mirza and her Czech partner Lucie Hradecka's splendid run at the Charleston Open ended after they lost the title clash 2-6 6-4 7-10 to Andreja Klepac and Magda Linette.
  • Mirza and Hradecka had a stunning run at the WTA 500 event, reaching the women's doubles final after pulling off a major upset by stunning top seeds Zhang Shuai and Caroline Dolehide in the semi-finals.
  • Mirza and Hradecka had also reached the semifinal of the Dubai Tennis Championships in February.

Hardik Pandya Becomes Fastest Indian to Smash 100 sixes in IPL

  • Gujarat Titans skipper Hardik Pandya became the fastest Indian to smash 100 sixes in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
  • The all-rounder reached the milestone in a total of 1046 balls. He also became the third-fastest player in the world to smash 100 sixes, after West Indies' Chris Gayle and Andre Russell.
  • Hardik achieved this feat during the clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Dr. DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai.

Ravichandran Ashwin Becomes First Indian in T20 and also First in Indian Premier League (IPL) to ...

  • Ashwin became the first player in the Indian Premier League's (IPL) 14-year history to "retire out". Before Ashwin, only three other cricketers, Pakistan's Shahid Afridi, Bhutan's Sonam Tobgay, and Bangladesh's Sunzamul Islam, had opted for "retiring out".
  • Ashwin's decision impressed many cricket lovers who were not aware of this rule.
  • According to rules laid by the International Cricket Council (ICC), a batsman can choose to retire anytime during the inning when the "ball is dead" after informing the umpires. "Dead ball" is a technical term that loosely means a time during the match when both teams are not playing.
