Max Verstappen Wins Azerbaijan GP

  • Red Bull's Max Verstappen won the Azerbaijan Formula One Grand Prix to extend his Formula One championship lead over Ferrari's Charles Leclerc. Max Verstappen had one of the best races in his season, finishing on the podium after starting from number three. In the process, Verstappen became the most successful driver in the Red Bull of all time. The 24-year-old now has 66 podiums for Red Bull and is tied ninth for the most race wins alongside Jim Clark and Niki Lauda.
  • Vettel finished sixth, despite a trip down an escape road. He had tried to pass Esteban Ocon's Alpine at Turn 3 early on but overshot the corner and had to spin turn, dropping to 12th. It took him over 10 laps to catch and pass Ocon properly but, in the long run, his misadventure only cost him one place to Hamilton.

Tamil Nadu's CM Unveils the 44th Chess Olympiad's Logo, Mascot

  • M.K. Stalin, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, unveiled the logo and mascot for the 44th Chess Olympiad, which will take place in Mamallapuram next month. Between July 28 and August 10, approximately 2,000 players from over 180 countries will compete in the international event. Mr. Stalin also unveiled a countdown clock for the Olympiad at the Greater Chennai Corporation's headquarters, Ripon Buildings.
  • The Chess Olympiad torch will be carried across the country soon before being lit in the venue on the first day of the competition.
  • After the World Championship encounter between India's Viswanathan Anand and Magnus Carlsen in 2013, this is Chennai's second big international chess event. The international tournament preparations are moving at a breakneck speed.

Avani Lekhara, a Shooter, Sets World Record to Win Gold at the Para World Cup

  • Avani Lekhara, the Tokyo Paralympics winner, won gold in the Para Shooting World Cup in Chateauroux, France, with a world record score of 250.6 in the women's 10m air rifle standing SH1. The 20-year-old shooter shattered her own world record of 249.6 to qualify for the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris. Emilia Babska of Poland won silver with a score of 247.6, while Anna Normann of Sweden took bronze with a score of 225.6.
  • The SH1 category is for athletes competing in rifle events who have a lower limb handicap.
  • Lekhara won the top prize three days after her coach and escort were denied visas and she was in danger of missing the tournament. Lekhara won gold in the 10m air rifle standing event in the SH1 category at the Tokyo Paralympics in August 2021.

Indian Shooters Win Gold in 10 Meter Air Pistol Mixed Team Event in France

  • Rubina Francis and Manish Narwal won the 10m P6 air pistol mixed team event to clinch India's third gold medal at the ongoing World Shooting Para Sport World Cup in Chateauroux, France.
  • Narwal and Francis, who aggregated a world record qualifying score of 565 to enter the final at the top position, defeated Chinese pair of Yang Chao and Min Li 17-11 in the title clash.
  • The Indian pair totalled 274.3.
  • Tokyo Paralympics gold medallist Narwal scored 138.7 in the final six shots. He shot consistent scores of 10s and 9s, but Francis also matched her fancied partner with 9s, a few 8s and 10.

Shot Putter Jasmine Kaur Sets New Youth National Record

  • Jasmine Kaur won a gold medal in the shot put event of the Khelo India Youth Games, and also registered a New Youth National Record.
  • Hailing from a small village, Samundari, an hour away from Anandpur Sahib, Jasmine surprised everyone at the Tau Devi Lal Stadium with a throw of 16.12m. She improved her previous Khelo India Games record, which was 14.85.
  • Notably, her younger sister Gurleen Kaur (U-16 national medallist) was also competing against her today. However, she was ruled out from the medal round owing to an injury. The youngster admires her father and gives all credit to him.

International Cricket Returns to Multan after 14 Years

  • Pakistan took on West Indies in the first of the three-match One-day International series at the Multan Cricket Stadium, with crucial ICC Cricket World Cup Super League (CWCSL) points up for grabs. This was after a gap of more than 14 years that international cricket returned to the venue with Bangladesh having played here in April 2008. International cricket got suspended in Pakistan due to terrorist attack on Sri Lanka team bus in 2098. The series was initially scheduled to be played in Rawalpindi but was moved to Multan at the last minute.
  • One of the biggest challenges for both teams was dealing with the heat. Temperatures were around the high 40s.

Ranji Trophy 2022 Quarterfinal: Bengal Create History by Breaking 129-year Record, Nine Batters I...

  • The Bengal Ranji Trophy team created a global first-class record when all nine batters, who took guard, scored half-centuries in a mammoth first innings score of 773 for eight against a hapless Jharkhand on the third day of the quarter-finals.
  • The match will be remembered for a record that stood the test of time since 1893 when the touring Australian team, in a first-class game against combined universities (Oxford and Cambridge), had eight of their batters scoring fifty or more. For Bengal, skipper Abhimanyu Easwaran (65) started the march towards milestone along with fellow opener Abhishek Raman (61).
  • This was followed by impressive knocks from Sudip Gharami (186) and senior-most batter Anushtup Majumdar (117). They added 243 runs for the second wicket. Bengal's junior Sports Minister Manoj Tiwary (73) also added his name to the list along with Abhishek Porel (68), who has not let Bengal miss Wriddhiman Saha for once.
  • RCB all-rounder Shahbaz Ahmed (78) and Sayan Sekhar Mondal (53) also made half-centuries to complete an Indian cricket but when Akash Deep came and smashed 8 sixes in 18-ball-53, the global first-class record was broken after 129 years.

India Beat Poland to Clinch Inaugural FIH Hockey 5s Title

  • India beat Poland 6-4 in final to clinch the inaugural FIH Hockey 5s championship in Lausanne in Switzerland. Earlier, India first outplayed Malaysia 7-3, pumping in four goals in the second half in a stunning show before beating Poland 6-2 in the second match of the day. India, who had topped the five-team league standings with three wins and one draw en route final, ended their campaign with an unbeaten record.
  • India had topped the five-team standings after the round-robin league stage with 10 points from three wins and one draw. India had beaten hosts Switzerland 4-3 and drawn with arch-rivals Pakistan 2-2.
