Indian Women's Wrestling Team Wins U-17 Asian Championship, Kyrgyzstan

  • Indian women's wrestling team won five medals to claim Under-17 Asian Championship title with a total of eight gold at Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. India lifted the title with a total of 235 points from eight gold, one silver and one bronze. Japan had to be content with the runners-up trophy with 143 points and Mongolia finished third with 138 points.
  • Bouts in 5 weight categories of women wrestling were held. Indian women including Ritika won gold in 43 kilogram, Ahilaya Shinde got gold in 49 kilogram, Siksha lifted gold medal in 57 kilogram, Priya received gold in 73 kilogram while Pulkit secured a Silver medal in 65 kilogram. In addition, the competitions in three weight categories of Free Style were also held and Parwinder Singh won Gold in 80 kilogram while Narender secured Silver in 71 kilogram.

England's Matt Fitzpatrick Wins 2022 United States Open Championship in Boston

  • Matt Fitzpatrick conquered The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts, to win the US Open, the first major victory of his career.
  • Matt had won seven times on the European Tour, but had yet to win a professional event held on US soil.
  • Entering the final round, Fitzpatrick was tied atop the leaderboard with Will Zalatoris.

Sunil Chhetri Becomes Joint 5th Highest Goalscorer

  • Indian Men's football team captain, Sunil Chhetri scored his 84th International goal against Hong Kong during the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Asian Cup 2023 Qualifiers and equalled the record of Real Madrid and Hungarian Football Legend Ferenc Puskás.
  • Sunil Chhetri has scored 84 goals in 129 appearances while Ferenc Puskás (died in 2006 aged 79) scored 84 goals in 85 international matches. Sunil Chhetri is the 3rd highest goal scorer in international football among active players, after Cristiano Ronaldo with 117 goals and Lionel Messi with 86 goals. He is also the highest active goal scorer from Asia and India.
  • The top five goalscorers are: Cristiano Ronaldo 117 goals, Ali Daei 109 goals, Mokhtar Dahari netted 89 goals, Lionel Messi 86 goals and Sunil Chhetri and Ferenc Puskás with 84 goals.

Hubert Hurkacz Beats Daniil Medvedev to Win Halle Open

  • Hubert Hurkacz upset top-ranked Daniil Medvedev to win the Halle Open and underline his credentials as a contender for Wimbledon two years running.
  • The big-serving Polish player beat Medvedev 6-1, 6-4 and won his first grass-court title.
  • Hurkacz was a semi-finalist at Wimbledon last year and seems on form again after a Halle tournament run in which he also beat defending champion Ugo Humbert, U.S. Open semi-finalist Felix Auger-Aliassime and the in-form Australian Nick Kyrgios.

Manpreet Singh to Lead Full-strength Squad for Commonwealth Games

  • India named a full-strength 18-member men's hockey squad for the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Birmingham with Manpreet Singh returning as captain and drag-flicker Harmanpreet Singh as his deputy.
  • Hockey India (HI) had initially decided to send a second-string team due to the short turnaround time between the Birmingham CWG and the Hangzhou Asian Games, a qualifier for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
  • With the Asian Games now postponed due to Covid, HI decided to pick a strong team for the event which is scheduled to begin from July 28.
  • India has been grouped in Pool B along with England, Canada, Wales and Ghana.

WI Pacer Kemar Roach Equals Michael Holding's Tally of 249 Test Wickets

  • West Indies pacer Kemar Roach scalped his 249th wicket and equalled the Test wicket tally of the former pacer Michael Holding.
  • Roach achieved this feat during the first Test against Bangladesh at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua on Sunday, where he scalped a total of 7 wickets in both the innings. The pacer now stands at the seventh spot on the list of highest Test wicket-takers of West Indies.
  • Former pacer Michael Holding stands at number six due to a better economy rate than Roach. The first on the list is Courtney Andrew Walsh, with a total of 519 wickets.

At 105 Years, Super Grandma Sprints to New 100 m Record

  • The new record set by the 105-year-outdated Rambai in 100 m on the inaugural National Open Masters Athletics Championships is 45.40 seconds — carried out by the Athletics Federation of India — that concluded in Vadodara.
  • Rambai, born on Jan 1, 1917, ran alone in Vadodara as there was no competitor above 85 on the meet. She had entered within the Above-100 class.
  • After profitable a golden dash double on the nationwide grasp meet and setting a new 100m record for her age group, 105-year-outdated Rambai now desires to participate in worldwide tournaments. She is planning to apply for a passport.

Sourav Kothari Clinches Pacific International Billiards Championship in Melbourne

  • It was double delight for former world billiards champion Sourav Kothari, who clinched the Pacific International Billiards Championship title in Melbourne, just days after bagging the Snooker crown in the same event.
  • Kothari edged past multiple-time English champion Rob Hall of England 1500-1321 in the final of the Level 5 World Billiards ranking event to win the title.

PM Modi Launches Historic Torch Relay for the 44th Chess Olympiad

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the historic torch relay for the 44th Chess Olympiad at Indira Gandhi Stadium in New Delhi. This year, for the very first time, the International Chess Body, FIDE, has instituted the Chess Olympiad Torch which is part of Olympic tradition but was never done in the Chess Olympiad. India will be the first-ever country to have the Chess Olympiad Torch Relay.
  • Notably, taking the Indian roots of Chess to a greater height, this tradition of Torch Relay for the Chess Olympiad will henceforth always begin in India and travel across all continents before reaching the host country.
  • FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich handed over the torch to Prime Minister, who in turn handed it over to Grandmaster Vishwanathan Anand.
  • This torch will then be taken to 75 cities in a span of 40 days before the final culmination at Mahabalipuram near Chennai.

FIFA U-17 Women's WC: Navi Mumbai to Host Final

  • The DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai will host the summit clash of the U-17 Women's World Cup on October 30 while the semi-finals will be played in Goa, FIFA and Local Organising Committee (LOC) announced.
  • Bhubaneswar is set to host India's three group stage matches beginning on October 11.
  • The 24 group stage games will conclude on October 18 and the matches will be shared among all three host states – Odisha, Goa and Maharashtra.
  • The quarter-final rounds of games will be held on October 21 and 22 following which the semi-finals will be held on October 26.
