National Kite Boarding Championship Held in Tuticorin

  • The third edition of the National Kite Boarding Championship was held in Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu under the aegis of Yachting Association of India (YAI) which is the National Federation for the sport of Sailing in India and Premier Kite Boarding Association, the National body representing Kite Boarding in India.
  • The three day event was hosted by Aqua Outback, Tuticorin and organised by Tamil Nadu Sailing Association and Chennai Sailing Academy.
  • The Regatta was governed by the rules as defined in the Racing Rules of Sailing. Kite Boarding will be making its debut in Olympics at Paris 2024.

Dhanalakshmi Becomes Third Fastest Indian Woman in 200m

  • Ace sprinter Sekar Dhanalakshmi ran her personal best time to win 200m gold at the Qosanov Memorial Athletics Meet while the likes of shot putter Tajinderpal Singh Toor and javelin thrower Rohit Yadav returned to India without competing in the event.
  • Dhanalakshmi ran a creditable sub-23 second, clocking 22.89s to better her earlier personal best of 23.14s she had come up last year.
  • She had won a 200m gold in the national Inter-State Championships in Chennai earlier this month with a time of 23.27s.
  • Dhanalakshmi is only the third Indian woman to run sub-23s after national record holder Saraswati Saha (22.82s) and Hima Das (22.88s).

Handball Team Records First Win in U-20 World

  • The Indian women's junior handball team created history by registering its first ever win in the U-20 World Championships, held in Celje and Lasko in Slovenia. The Indian girls beat Iran 31-30 in the ranking placements. This is the first ever win for any Indian team, men's or women's, in any age-group World Championships.
  • The same team had won the Junior Women's Asian Championship gold to qualify for the U-20 World Championships. This was the first instance of an Indian handball team medalling at the Asian event.
  • The team is out of the reckoning for the knockout stage after it lost three matches to higher-ranked opponents, losing 23-41 to Japan, 18-46 to Netherlands and 12-59 to Slovakia.

England Captain Morgan to Announce Retirement from International Cricket

  • England's World Cup-winning white-ball captain Eoin Morgan is set to announce his retirement from international cricket, ending a career in which he played more than 300 times across 50-over and Twenty20 formats.
  • Morgan, who led England to 50-over World Cup glory in 2019, captained England in a record 126 ODIs and 72 T20s. His 118 wins as skipper across the two formats is also a record.
  • Morgan made his ODI debut with Ireland in 2006 before he was called up by England in 2009, has played 248 ODIs and 115 T20Is, scoring 10,159 runs in total. He has also played in 16 tests, scoring 700 runs.

India Wins its Maiden Gold Medal in the Compound Mixed Team Archery at the World Cup

  • Abhishek Verma and Jyothi Surekha Vennam won India its maiden gold medal in the compound mixed team archery event at the World Cup.
  • Riding on a spectacular start, the Indians fought off a late fight-back from France's Jean Boulch and 48-year-old Olympics medallist Sophie Dodemont to seal the contest 152-149 at the Stage 3 edition.
  • Later, world No. 3 Jyothi secured a second medal for India after settling for a silver in the individual section. She went down 148-148 (10-10) to Ella Gibson in an intense shoot-off that was decided on the arrow that landed closer to the centre.

Madhya Pradesh Win their Maiden Ranji Trophy Title

  • Mumbai batter Sarfaraz Khan was crowned as the 'Man of the Tournament for his brilliant Ranji Trophy 2022 with the bat, which saw him score 982 runs.
  • Madhya Pradesh created history and won its maiden Ranji Trophy title, defeating favourites Mumbai in the finals by six wickets at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
  • In six games, Sarfaraz scored 982 runs at an average of 122.75, finishing at the top of the batting charts. Four centuries and two half-centuries were scored by the batter in the season, with the best individual score of 275.

Cyclist Ronaldo, First Indian Cyclist to Win Silver at Asian Championship

  • Ronaldo Singh scripted history as he became the first Indian cyclist to win a silver in a continental tournament in the senior category by finishing second in the sprint event on the concluding day of the Asian Track Championship here.
  • Ronaldo's feat was the best performance by any Indian cyclist in a continental championship. He gave a tough fight to Japan's experienced rider Kento Yamasaki but finished with a silver.
  • Yamasaki defeated Ronaldo in back-to-back races to finish at the top of the podium. Kazakhstan's Andrey Chugay won the bronze in the event.

Delhi High Court Removes Narinder Batra as IOA President

  • The Delhi High Court barred Narinder Batra from officiating as the president of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). The court also made Anil Khanna the acting president of the sports body.
  • The court's vacation bench gave this order while hearing a contempt proceeding filed on behalf of former Olympian Aslam Sher Khan against Batra, IOA secretary general Rajeev Mehta and the sports secretary.
  • The petition was filed as Batra was still attending meetings, including those with the Sports Ministry, as the IOA president. It was deemed in contempt of a May 25 order of the Delhi High Court, which had set aside the life membership of Batra. The court had also set aside the term of the executive committee of Hockey India as it was deemed to be in violation of the National Sports Development Code of India, 2011.

Ultimate Kho Kho League Gets Odisha Govt. as Fifth Franchise Owner

  • The Odisha government's sports promotion company will own a team in the upcoming Ultimate Kho Kho. It will be the fifth franchise owner in the six-member league.
  • The other four franchises are owned by the Adani Group, GMR, Capri Global and KLO Sports. This includes the Gujarat, Telangana, Rajasthan and Chennai teams respectively.
  • Owning a kho kho team will be the second direct sports venture for the Odisha government, which operated the Kalinga Lancers team in the Hockey India League in 2013.
  • Kho Kho is very popular in many parts of Odisha.

Swimming World Championships: Ledecky Extends Record Medal Haul to 21

  • Katie Ledecky extended her record haul of medals from the world championships to 21, two more than any other female swimmer managed before. All but three of them are gold.
  • Ledecky claimed her 18th gold at a worlds as the United States won the women's 4x200 freestyle relay final, clocking the fastest split – 1:53.67 – to help the Americans triumph in a championship record 7:41.45.
  • Claire Weinstein, Leah Smith, Ledecky and Bella Sims finished 2.41 seconds ahead of the Australian team and 3.31 ahead of the Canadians.
  • Ledecky had already won gold medals in the 1500 freestyle and 400 freestyle to add to the 15 gold she had coming into the competition in Budapest.

Rumeli Dhar Retires from All Forms of International Cricket

  • Rumeli Dhar, the India seam-bowling allrounder, announced her retirement from international cricket, at the age of 38. Dhar played her last international match in the tri-nation women's T20I series between India, Australia and England, at Brabourne in 2018. In all, she featured in four Tests, 78 ODIs, and 18 T20Is, scoring 1328 runs and taking 84 wickets across formats. She was also part of the India team that had reached the 2005 World Cup final in South Africa.
  • Having made her international debut in 2003, against England in Lincoln, Dhar made an unlikely comeback, to the Indian team at the age of 34, when she was called up to India's T20 squad for their tour of South Africa in February 2018.

Lisa Sthalekar Becomes First Woman President of FICA

  • Legendary Australian cricketer Lisa Sthalekar became the first woman president of the Federation of International Cricketers' Association (FICA).
  • The former Australia captain was confirmed in the role at the FICA Executive Committee meeting held in Nyon, Switzerland.
  • She will take up a position that has previously been held by former South Africa batter Barry Richards, former West Indies all-rounder Jimmy Adams, and most recently by former England batter Vikram Solanki.

India Jump Two Places to 104 in FIFA Ranking after Asian Cup Qualification

  • The Indian football team reaped a good harvest of its impressive Asian Cup qualification campaign as it gained two places to jump to 104th in the latest FIFA world rankings released in June 2022.
  • The Blue Tigers were placed just below New Zealand (103rd), who missed out on a 2022 FIFA World Cup spot after losing to Costa Rica 0-1 in the intercontinental play-off.
  • India's ranking among Asian Football Confederation members, however, still remained static at 19th place. Iran retained the top spot among AFC countries at 23rd place.
