Bangladesh ODI captain Tamim Announces Retirement from T20 Internationals

  • Bangladesh ODI captain Tamim Iqbal announced his retirement from T20 Internationals following his side's 50-over series win against the West Indies.
  • He played 78 T20 Internationals, scoring 1758 runs at 24.08.
  • In January, Tamim had taken a six month break from the shortest format but he did feature in a domestic tournament during that period.
  • Tamim is one of the best openers to have come out of Bangladesh, having scored 5082 runs in Tests and 7943 runs in ODIs.

P.V. Sindhu Wins Singapore Open 2022

  • India's badminton star P.V. Sindhu thrashed China's Wang Zhiyi in the final of the Singapore Open 2022. She defeated Zhiyi 21-9 11-21 21-15 in the summit clash.
  • Sindhu is the second Indian women's shuttler, and third Indian overall, to win the Singapore Open title. Saina Nehwal (2010) and B. Sai Praneeth (2017) have earlier lifted the title in women's and men's singles, respectively.

Nithya Wins Gold, Bhagat Silver in Para Badminton

  • India's Nithya Sre Sumathy Sivan won the gold medal in the women's singles SH6 class, while world No. 1 Pramod Bhagat finished runner-up in the men's singles SL3 category in the 4 Nations Para Badminton International in Dublin. The mixed doubles pairing of Chirag Baretha and Mandeep Kaur settled for silver in the SL3-SU5 classification.

Tokyo to Host 2025 World Athletics Championships

  • Tokyo was selected as the host city for the 2025 World Athletics Championships, the sport's governing body announced.
  • The event would return to the site of last year's Olympic Games in the year that the Japanese Association of Athletics Federations (JAAF) celebrates its centenary.
  • Nairobi, Silesia and Singapore had also bid for the championships, while Budapest will host the 2023 version.
  • Tokyo held the event in 1991, highlighted by the incredible world-record-breaking long jump duel between gold medallist Mike Powell and Carl Lewis, while it was also held in Japan in 2007 with Osaka hosting.
  • This year's (2022) Championships, delayed from 2021, begin in Oregon.

  • India topped the medals tally at the ISSF Shooting World Cup after a string of fantastic performances by its shooters.
  • India finished the tournament with eight medals, three gold, four silver and a bronze, were way ahead of hosts South Korea and Serbia on the medals table.

AFI and RIL Sign Long Term Partnership to Support Talented Athletes

  • Athletics Federation of India (AFI) and Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) announced a long-term partnership to provide world class facilities to talented athletes, with special focus on women.
  • The partnership aims to nurture and develop Indian athletes from across the country and provide them with world-class facilities, coaching and sports science support.
  • As AFI's principal partner, the Reliance brand will appear across the national team's jerseys and training kits at key national, international competitions and training camps.

Surya Shekhar Ganguly Wins Fischer Random Event at 55th Biel Chess Festival

  • Indian Grandmaster Surya Sekhar Ganguly emerged winner in the Fischer Random event at Biel Chess Festival with compatriot S.P. Sethuraman finishing in second place.
  • GM Gabguly scored 6.5 points from 7 rounds to take the top prize ahead of Sethuraman (5.5 points) and French Woman Grandmaster Vera Nebolsina (5.5 points).
  • Ganguly remained unbeaten through the seven rounds, securing six wins and drawing one game with Alexandra Kosteniuk.
  • Gabguly's wins came against Arashavir Musaelyan (Switzerland) Sai Kalluri Hari Charan (India), Robin Angst (Switzerland), Jose Antonio Herrera Reyes (Spain), Sethuraman and Konstantinos Ragios (Greece).

Joy Bhattacharjya is Director General Federation of Indian Fantasy Sports

  • The Federation of Indian Fantasy Sports (FIFS), a self-regulatory industry body, appointed Joy Bhattacharjya as its director general. In this role, he would oversee the functioning of the body and work with policymakers and industry stakeholders alike. Bhattacharjya is the CEO of the Prime Volleyball League and is a cricket analyst.
  • The Federation of Indian Fantasy Sports (FIFS), earlier known as the Indian Federation of Sports Gaming IFSG, was established to protect consumer interest and create standardised best practices in the Fantasy Sports industry.

Jonny Bairstow, Marizanne Kapp Wins ICC Player of the Month for June 2022

  • The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced the ICC Player of the Month awards for June 2022. England's in-form batter Jonny Bairstow bagged the Men's Player of the Month title while South Africa's power hitting batter Marizanne Kapp was awarded with Women's Player of the Month.
  • Jonny Bairstow received the title after his remarkable performances last month against New Zealand. He defeated his team-mate Joe Root and New Zealand batter Daryl Mitchell in the race of receiving the "Player of the Month" award.

Women's Hockey World Cup: India Put 3 Past Japan, Finish Campaign at 9th

  • Navneet Kaur scored a brace as the Indian women's hockey team beat Japan 3-1 to finish ninth in the FIH World Cup.
  • Navneet (30th, 45th minutes) scored two field goals, while Deep Grace Ekka (38th) converted a penalty corner in the classification match. Japan's lone goal was scored by Yu Asai in the 20th minute.

Mohammed Shami Becomes Fastest Indian Bowler to 150 ODI Wickets

  • Mohammed Shami broke the record of Ajit Agarkar and became the fastest Indian bowler to 150 ODI wickets.
  • Mohammed Shami became the fastest Indian bowler to 150 ODI wickets in the first India vs England ODI at the Kennington Oval. The seamer needed 80 matches to 150 ODI wickets. Shami, who returned match figures of 3/31 from seven overs in India's 10-wicket win, achieved the feat with his second wicket of the match.
