Swiss Open 2022: Casper Ruud Defeats Matteo Berrettini in the Final

  • Norway's Casper Ruud won the Swiss Open Tennis Tournament 2022 held in Gstaad, Switzerland. He defeated Italy's Matteo Berrettini in the final by 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-2. It was Ruud's 9th Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) title. The Swiss Open was Ruud's 3rd title in 2022, the other two titles are Buenos Aires and Geneva Open. Ruud had also won the 2021 Swiss Open title.
  • Ruud snapped the 12-match unbeaten streak of Berrettini, who lifted trophies in Stuttgart and London earlier this year. It was Casper Ruud 9th ATP Title. Earlier this year, Ruud finished as the runner-up at the French Open, losing to Spanish ace Rafael Nadal.

Sindhu Named India's Flagbearer for Commonwealth Games' Opening Ceremony

  • Double Olympic medallist badminton ace P.V. Sindhu was the flagbearer of the Indian contingent for the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games.
  • Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra, who was also the defending champion in the Commonwealth Games having won the gold in Gold Coast four years ago, was expected to be the flagbearer.
  • But a groin injury following his silver medal at the World Championships forced him to pullout.
  • Tokyo Olympics medallists, weightlifter Mirabai Chanu and boxer Lovlina Borgohain were the other two athletes, who were also considered before IOA decided to go for Sindhu.

Mastercard Set to Replace Paytm as Title Sponsor for all BCCI Matches

  • Global payments and technology company Mastercard is set to replace Indian digital payments company Paytm as the title sponsor for all international and domestic cricket matches organised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
  • The board has, reportedly, accepted Paytm's plea for the reassignment of its title rights. Paytm has been BCCI's title sponsor since 2015, and renewed the contract in August 2019.

Bisheshwar Nandi is Indian Women's Gymnastics Coach for Commonwealth Games 2022

  • Gymnastics coach Bishweshwar Nandi, who guided Dipa Karmakar to an unprecedented fourth-place finish in the Rio Olympics in 2016, was named as the Indian women's team coach for the Commonwealth Games.
  • Bishweshwar replaced Rohit Jaiswal, who was vacated from his position after gymnast Aruna Budda Reddy accused him that he video-graphed her without consent.

BCCI to Host 2025 Women's ODI World Cup

  • India will host the Women's 50-over World Cup in 2025 as the BCCI has successfully bid for the mega event during the ICC Annual Conference that concluded in Birmingham.
  • The ICC flagship event will return to the country after more than a decade.
  • The last time a women's 50-over World Cup was held in India was back in 2013 when Australian emerged champions after beating the West Indies by 114 runs in the final in Mumbai.
  • Three other ICC women's events were also awarded with Bangladesh hosting the 2024 T20 World Cup and England winning hosting rights for the 2026 edition.

World Athletics Championships 2022 Medal Tally

  • The United States topped the medal table standings with 33 medals overall, which included 13 gold, 9 silver, and 11 bronze medals. The total is also the most by any country at a single World Athletics Championships.
  • Ethiopia, with 10 medals overall finished second in the standings after collecting four gold medals, two silver, and two bronze, the same amount of total medals collected by Jamaica which ended with two gold, seven silver, and one bronze.
  • The United States, which hosted the World Athletics Championships for the first time, also dominated the points overall with 328, with Jamaica second with 111, Ethiopia (106) and Kenya (104).

Annesha Ghosh Replaces Sandeep Mehta as Press Attache for Commonwealth

  • Annesha Ghosh replaced Sandeep Mehta as press attache of the Indian contingent for the Commonwealth Games.
  • Ghosh, a freelance journalist, was roped in to handle social media, among other things.
  • The CWG is scheduled to begin on July 28 with a total of 215 Indian athletes participating in 141 events across 19 sporting disciplines.

BCCI Introduces a New A+ Category for Umpires

  • The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) introduced a new A+ category for its umpires and Nitin Menon, along with ten other officials, were grouped in the category. Umpires in A+ and A categories are paid Rs. 40,000 a day for a first-class game while Rs. 30,000 a day are paid in the B and C category.
  • The others in the A+ category include four international umpires: Anil Chaudhary, Madangopal Jayaraman, Virender Kumar Sharma and K. N. Ananthapadmabhanan.
  • Rohan Pandit, Nikhil Patwardhan, Sadashiv Iyer, Ulhas Gandhe and Navdeep Singh Sidhu are also part of the A+ category.
  • Twenty umpires form the A group, 60 are in Group B, 46 in Group C and 11 in Group D which falls in the 60-65 age bracket.

World Athletics Championships: Armand Duplantis Breaks his Own Pole Vault Record

  • Armand Duplantis brought down the curtain on the World Championships in stunning fashion, breaking his own pole vault world record in the final act of the 10-day track and field meet in Eugene.
  • The Swede sailed over 6.21 metres to surpass his previous mark by one centimetre, set in March en route to winning gold at the World Indoor Championships, and completed his collection of medals by claiming a first world title.
  • American Chris Nilsen took silver with 5.94 metres on countback from Ernest John Obiena, whose bronze was the first-ever world medal for the Philippines.

Tobi Amusan Breaks World Record in 100m Hurdles Semis, Claims Gold in Final

  • Nigeria's Tobi Amusan broke the women's 100m hurdles world record after a spectacular performance in the semi-finals at the World Athletics Championships in Oregon.
  • After breaking the world record, she also went on to win gold in the final clash.
  • The Nigerian was competed in the very first race of Day 10 of the championships when she breezed past the line in the new world record of 12.12, breaking the previous mark of 12.20 by 0.08 seconds.

Neeraj Chopra Wins Silver in World Athletics Championships

  • Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra scripted yet another history as he became only the second Indian and first male track and field athlete to win a medal in the World Athletics Championships by clinching silver in the javelin throw final.
  • Chopra who had come into the showpiece as a hot medal favourite, produced a best throw of 88.13m to finish second.
  • The legendary long jumper Anju Bobby George was the first Indian to win a medal -- bronze -- in the World Athletics Championships in the 2003 edition in Paris.
  • Defending champion Anderson Peters of Grenada won gold with a best throw of 90.54m while Olympic silver winner Jakub Vadlejch of Czech Republic took the bronze with 88.09m.

Eldhose Paul Becomes First Indian to Qualify for Triple Jump Final & Finishes 9th

  • Eldhose Paul, the first Indian triple jumper to compete in a World Athletics Championships final, put on a commendable display to finish ninth at the 2022 meet.
  • Paul, who produced a best attempt of 16.68m in the qualifiers to squeeze through into the 12-man final, began with a 16.37m jump in his first attempt. With his second attempt, he improved his mark to 16.79m — just 0.20m short of his personal best of 16.99m logged at the Federation Cup earlier this year.
  • However, the Indian jumper posted a disappointing 13.86m with his third jump and narrowly missed out on a top eight placement after the third round, which meant he couldn't get the three additional attempts.
  • Tokyo 2020 champion Pedro Pichardo won the gold medal with a world-leading mark of 17.95m. Burkina Faso's Hugues Fabrice Zango, the Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist, clinched silver with 17.55m while the bronze went to China's Yaming Zhu, the Tokyo silver medallist.

Jamaica's Sherika Jackson Wins 200m Worlds with Second-fastest Time Ever

  • Shericka Jackson gave the Jamaican women another gold medal in the sprints, capturing the 200-meter title at the world championships in the second-fastest time in history, 21.45 seconds.
  • Jackson crossed 0.16 seconds ahead of Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, who won the 100m.
  • Jackson's time was second only to one of the most hallowed marks on the books the 21.34 by Florence Griffith-Joyner at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul. It blew away the old world-championship record of 21.63 set by Dafne Schippers of the Netherlands.
