McLaughlin-Levrone, Mondo Duplantis Won 'World Athlete of the Year' Awards

  • World champion American hurdler Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone and Swedish pole vaulter Armand "Mondo" Duplantis won the World Athlete of the Year awards.
  • McLaughlin-Levrone broke the world women's 400m hurdles record twice while Duplantis set three new world highs this year.
  • US-born Swede Duplantis claimed the award for the second time in three years with three world records in 2022 plus the men's world indoor title in March and the world outdoor gold in July.

Eden Hazard Announces Retirement from International Football

  • Belgium captain Eden Hazard announced his retirement from international football after his side crashed out in the group-stages of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
  • Hazard was the face of Belgium football. He made his international debut in 2008 and has earned 126 caps for his country, scoring 33 goals for them.
  • He was one of the best players in the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, guiding his team to a third place finish. However, after a dismal performance in the 2022 World Cup, he decided to hang up his boots.
  • Hazard won Belgian Footballer of the Year in 2017, 2018 and 2019, while also winning the award for Belgium's Sportsman of the Year in 2018.

Rohit Sharma Becomes First Indian to Hit 500 Sixes in International Cricket

  • Captain Rohit Sharma became the first Indian, and just the second batter world-wide, in international cricket to hit 500 sixes, during the second ODI against Bangladesh.
  • Rohit's tally of 500 international sixes is bettered by only West Indies legend Chris Gayle, who has 533 sixes. No other Indian batter has more than 400 sixes. M.S. Dhoni with 359 sixes is the closest to Rohit among Indian players.
  • The likes of Shahid Afridi (476), Brendon McCullum (398), Martin Guptill (383) are the third, fourth and fifth place respectively in the list of most number of six hitters in international cricket.

Sukant Kadam Strikes Gold at Peru Para Badminton International

  • World No. 3 Sukant Kadam smashed his way to a gold medal at the Peru Para-Badminton International, defeating ace shuttler defeated Singapore's Chee Hiong Ang.
  • India won 14 medals in total (6 gold, 1 silver and 7 bronze).
  • Sukant defeated Chee Hiong Ang in straight sets with a score line of 21-14 and 21-15. The match lasted 32 minutes.
  • In the women's category, Nithya Sre Sumathy Sivan and Mandeep Kaur clinched the titles in the SH6 and SL3 singles sections.
  • Indian men's doubles pair Nehal and Breno Johann (SL3-SL4) and the women's doubles duo of Parul Parmar and Vaishali Nilesh Patel (SL3-SU5) claimed gold medals in their respective categories.

Olympic Medallist Mirabai Chanu Clinches Silver at World Weightlifting Championship

  • Top Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu was not at her best due to a wrist injury but still won a silver medal at the World Weightlifting Championships with a total lift of 200 kg, in Bogota, Colombia. The Tokyo Olympic silver medallist, competing in 49 kg category, managed to lift 87 kg in snatch and in 'clean and jerk' her best effort was a lift of 113 kg.
  • The Indian finished behind China's Jiang Huihua, who won the gold with a total effort of 206kg (93 kg + 113 kg) while her compatriot and Tokyo Olympics champion Hou Zhihua 198 kg (89 kg + 109 kg) took the bronze medal.

Cristiano Ronaldo Signs 200-million Euro Contract with Saudi Club Al-Nassr

  • Cristiano Ronaldo sensationally joined Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr on a two and a half year deal worth 200 million euros per season. Earlier, Ronaldo's agent Jorge Mendes had spoken to a number of clubs including European giants like Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Atletico Madrid, etc., but no one showed any serious interest in Rolando.
  • Ronaldo's contract got terminated by Manchester United after a controversial bombshell interview with broadcaster Piers Morgan.
  • Al Nassr Football Club is a Saudi Arabian football club based in Riyadh.
  • Formed in 1955, the club plays its home games at the Mrsool Park. Their home colours are yellow and blue. Al Nassr is one of the most successful clubs in Saudi Arabia.

Ramesh Powar Removed as Women's Head Coach, Hrishikesh Kanitkar Appointed as Batting Coach

  • Lack of communication with the players, growing differences with the senior players, taking decisions without the consent of the captain, and bad rapport with selectors were cited by top BCCI officials as reasons for removing Ramesh Powar as head coach of the Indian women's team two months ahead of the T20 World Cup. In a surprising move, the Board shifted Powar to the National Cricket Academy to work as a spin-bowling coach with the men's set up headed by VVS Laxman.
  • The board has not named any new head coach for the women's team. Instead, former India cricketer Hrishikesh Kanitkar, who has been a batting consultant at the NCA, was elevated to the senior women's team as batting coach and will oversee operations. Kanitkar has already linked up with the side in Mumbai as India is set to face Australia in a T20I series. Kanitkar is not new to the women's team set-up as he accompanied it to Sri Lanka as batting coach and was also there when they clinched silver at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Kanitkar also enjoys a good rapport with the players, especially with regards to the technical aspects and players often rely on him for inputs.

Manisha Ramadass Named as the BWF Female Para-Badminton Player of the Year

  • Young Indian shuttler Manisha Ramadass claimed the BWF Female Para-Badminton Player of the Year award for her stellar run this season. The Badminton World Federation (BWF) named Manisha as the winner after the 17-year-old won the gold in the World Championships in the SU5 section. Overall, she claimed 11 gold and five bronze medals in 2022.
  • Other contenders in this section were India's Nithya Sre Sumathy and Manasi Joshi, Sarina Satomi, Giuliana Poveda Flores, and Pilar Jauregui.

AIFF Withdraws Bid to Host 2027 AFC Asian Cup

  • India withdrew its bid to stage the 2027 AFC Asian Cup with the All India Football Federation (AIFF) declaring that hosting big-ticket events is not among its strategic priorities at this juncture.
  • India and Saudi Arabia were the only two countries left as bidders to host the 2027 continental showpiece after nations such as Iran and Uzbekistan pulled out of the race in October 2022.
  • India's bid was launched amid much fanfare in 2020 when Praful Patel was the AIFF president but the current dispensation under Kalyan Chaubey feels "building the foundations of football structure" through grassroots and youth development was more important than hosting big events.

Manu Bhaker, Sarabjot Singh Lift Mixed Team Pistol Title at Shooting Nationals

  • Manu Bhaker and Sarabjot Singh won the 10m air pistol mixed team title at the 65th National Shooting Championship Competitions (NSCC) at the MP Shooting Academy range in Bhopal, venue of the Pistol shooting events.
  • The Haryana duo trounced Karnataka's Divya T.S. and Imroz 16-4 in the gold medal encounter.
  • Manu and Sarabjot had earlier topped the qualification round as well with a combined score of 575, where the Karnataka pair had finished second with 573 to setup the title clash. Punjab and ONGC shared the bronze medals.
  • In the junior mixed team pistol, the gold was won by Uttar Pradesh's Anjali and Sagar, when they beat Uttarakhand's Yashsavi and Abhinav 18-16 in the gold medal match. Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh won the bronze medals.

Arjun Erigaisi, Rameshbabu Vaishali Emerge Champions in Tata Steel Chess India

  • Arjun Erigaisi clinched the Blitz title finishing ahead of Hikaru Nakaumura on the concluding day of the Tata Steel Chess India.
  • The Indian teenager finished with 12.5 points, one ahead of the American wizard after clinching the issue in the penultimate round with a splendid comeback.
