ICC Reveals Men's & Women's T20I Team of Year

  • The International Cricket Council Team of the Year recognises 11 outstanding individuals who have impressed one and all – be it with the bat, the ball or their all-round exploits in a calendar year. Indian players who made the cut in the shortest format of the gameare Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya in the men's team and in the woman's team were Smriti Mandhana, Deepti Sharma, Richa Ghosh and Renuka Singh.

Mary Kom to Lead Oversight Committee to Probe against WFI President

  • Boxing great MC Mary Kom was selected to lead a five-member Oversight Committee that will probe sexual harassment charges against Wrestling Federation of India president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.
  • The government-appointed Committee will also run the day-to-day affairs of WFI for the next one month.
  • The other members of the panel are Olympic medallist wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt, former badminton player and Mission Olympic Cell member Trupti Murgunde, ex-TOPS CEO Rajagopalan and former SAI executive director Radhika Sreeman.
  • Sports Minister Anurag Thakur had decided to form the Committee following a three-day sit-in protest by some of the country's top wrestlers including Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik and Ravi Dahiya against WFI and Singh.

India Open: World Welcomes Kunlavut Vitidsarn, An Seyoung

  • Thailand's Kunlavut Vitidsarn and South Korea's An Seyoung, put on scintillating shows and claimed the men's and women's singles titles, respectively, after stunning two-time world champions Viktor Axelsen and Akane Yamaguchi in the finals of the Yonex-Sunrise India Open Super 750 tournament.
  • Vitidsarn notched up the biggest title of his career when he beat Tokyo Olympics champion Axelsen of Denmark 22-20 10-21 21-12, while Seyoung saw off world No. 1 Yamaguchi 15-21 21-16 21-12 to affirm her reputation of being one of the most exciting young talents in the world.

Ex-SC judge A. K. Sikri is Administrator of Shooting World Cup 2023

  • The Delhi High Court appointed Justice (R) Arjan Kumar Sikri, former Supreme Court Judge, as an administrator to oversee the utilisation of funds for hosting the upcoming International Shooting Sports Federation World Cup.
  • The Bench of Justice Satish Chander Sharma and Justice Subramonium Prasad in an order said that the prestige of the country will be affected if there is any impediment in organising the World Cup event which would require funding from the Union of India.
  • World Cup event will be held in India in March 2023. The Administrator can also take the assistance of any sportsperson of his choice, who has been a national or international shooter, to assist him in the matter.
  • The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) through the present plea stated that India is hosting World Cup for the shooting sport in March 2023 and the stoppage of funds would affect the hosting of the World Cup. It is stated that the Applicant is dependent on the Government for the conduct of international events in India and various activities including training of the shooters and their participation in international events.

Netherlands Records Biggest Win in Hockey World Cup History

  • The three-time champion Netherlands defeated Chile by a score of a record-breaking 14-0 to qualify as the first team to the quarter-finals of the FIH Men's Hockey World Cup. The Netherlands finished at the top of Pool C with a maximum of nine points after racking up three victories in as many games.
  • This is the largest margin of victory in a World Cup game.
  • Australia previously held the record for the largest margin of victory in a Hockey World Cup match after thrashing South Africa 12-0 in New Delhi.

Rawat Clinches NSCI Snooker Open Crown

  • Laxman Rawat of PSPB emerged victorious in the 'Baulkline' NSCI All India Snooker Open, beating fellow PSPB challenger Aditya Mehta 9-6 in a best-of-17-frame final. This was a sweet victory for Rawat, who had finished as the runner-up in the previous edition of the tournament, losing to Sourav Kothari in the final. This win marked Rawat's first major title after 2-3 years.
  • The NSCI Snooker Open Crown is a snooker tournament organized by the National Sports Club of India (NSCI). The tournament is open to players from all over India and features a best-of-17-frame final. The tournament is considered as a major title in Indian snooker and the champion of the tournament is awarded the NSCI Snooker Open Crown.

Punjab U-16 beat Madhya Pradesh by 10 wickets to win Vijay Merchant Trophy

  • Punjab U-16 dominated from start to finish and beat Madhya Pradesh U-16 by 10 wickets in the final of the Vijay Merchant Trophy.
  • Batting first, MP was bowled out for 162 in the first innings with Anmoljeet taking six for 64 in his 46 overs.
  • Punjab scored 238 in the first essay and MP then was bowled out for 172 in their second innings.
  • This time Anmol bowled 37.3 overs, and took five for 93.
  • Punjab chased down the 97-run target in 23.2 overs to win the championship.

Shubman Gill Surpasses Virat Kohli's Record to Become Fastest Indian to Score 1000 ODI Runs

  • Shubman Gill became the fastest Indian to complete 1000 runs in ODIs as he reached the mark in 19 innings, surpassing the likes of Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan.
  • Gill, who made his ODI debut in January 2019, also became the joint second-fastest to 1000 runs in terms of innings alongside Imam Ul Haq of Pakistan. Fakhar Zaman had crossed 1000 runs in 18 innings.
  • Gill's India teammates Kohli and Dhawan, who he has replaced in the team, had completed 1000 runs in 24 innings.
  • Gill achieved the feat in the first ODI against New Zealand after getting to his second straight ODI century.

PM Modi Inaugurates the Second Phase of Saansad Khel Mahakumbh

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the second phase of Saansad Khel Mahakumbh 2022-23 organised in Basti district, Uttar Pradesh, via video conferencing.
  • Saansad Khel Mahakumbh is being organised in Basti district by Lok Sabha MP from Basti, Harish Dwivedi since 2021.
  • Saansad Khel Mahakumbh 2022-23 is being organised in two phases. The first phase was organised from December 10 to December 16, 2022, and the second phase of the Khel Mahakumbh is being organised from January 18 to January 28, 2023.
  • The Khel Mahakumbh organises diverse competitions in both indoor and outdoor sports like wrestling, kabaddi, kho kho, basketball, football, hockey, volleyball, handball, chess, carrom, badminton, table tennis etc. Apart from these, competitions in essay writing, painting, rangoli making etc are also organised during the Khel Mahakumbh.
  • The Khel Mahakumbh is a novel initiative that provides an opportunity and platform to the youth of Basti district and neighbouring areas to showcase their sporting talent and motivates them to take sport as a career option.
