Hockey India Planning to Revive HIL

The Hockey India League (HIL) is likely to be re-launched early next year (2024) as the national federation announced its exclusive commercial and marketing partner for the event.
HIL was stopped after the 2017 edition due to financial issues and Hockey India is now looking for new partners to revive the league.
Hockey India (HI) announced Big Bang Media Ventures Pvt Ltd as its exclusive commercial and marketing partner agency.

Nisha Dahia Wins Silver in Asian Wrestling Championships in Kazakhstan

India's Nisha Dahiya won silver at the Asian Wrestling Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan. This was the biggest-ever medal of her career in the women's 68 kg category.
Nisha reached the final but fell to Japan's Ami Ishii 10-0 and finished as a runner-up. Nisha had defeated China's Feng Zhou 7-6 in the semi-finals.
Another Indian wrestler, Priya Malik clinched a bronze in 76 kg category. She defeated Japan's Mizuki Nagashima in the repechage round.

Ons Jabeur downs Belinda Bencic to win Charleston Open, first title of the year

Ons Jabeur defeated defending champion Belinda Bencic in straight sets to win the WTA Charleston Open clay court tournament on Sunday.
Jabeur, the world number five from Tunisia, avenged her defeat to Bencic in last year's final with a hard-fought 7-6 (8/6), 6-4 victory in just under two hours.

Vikas bags solitary bronze for India on Day 2 of Asian Wrestling Championship

Vikas pinned Jain Tan of China 8-0 by technical superiority in the 72kg Greeko-Roman category to clinch a third bronze medal for India in the ongoing Asian Wrestling Championships here on April 10.
On the second day of the tournament, Sumit (60kg) and Rohit Dahiya (82kg) fell by the wayside in their bronze medal matches, but Vikas took just one minute and 41 seconds to knock out his Chinese rival.Mr. Sumit lost to Maita Kawana of Japan 14-6 after picking cautions in his bout. Mr. Dahiya on the other hand lost to Alireza Azizkhoon Mohamadipiani of Iran 1-5

Indian GM Gukesh wins title at World Chess Armageddon Asia & Oceania event

He won in a field that included former world classical champion Vladimir Kramnik, Daniil Dubov, Yangyi Yu, Vidit Gujrathi and Karthikeyan Murali and Param Maghsoodloo, apart from Nodirbek Abdusattorov.

Teenaged Indian Grandmaster D. Gukesh stunned former world rapid champion Nodirbek Abdusattorov of Uzbekistan in the final to win the World Chess Armageddon Asia & Oceania event here.
ukesh emerged winner in a topsy-turvy summit clash late on April 9, 2023.
After a missed chance in game 1, Gukesh lost the next game against Abdusattorov to use his "extra life" and start the match all over again.
he first game of the 'new' match was a draw after a perpetual check from Gukesh. He won the next game to emerge champion.
Both Gukesh and Abdusattorov have earned a spot at the Armageddon's Grand Finale in September.

Rajawat Seals Biggest Title of Career

India's Priyanshu Rajawat capped off an impressive week with a thrilling win in the final against Denmark's Magnus Johannesen to claim the men's singles title at the Orleans Masters in France.
The Madhya Pradesh shuttler, who was part of the Indian team that registered an epic win at the 2022 Thomas Cup, saw off world No. 49 Johannesen 21-15 19-21 21-16 in a 68-minute summit clash to grab the biggest title of his career.

Chennai to Host the Second Edition of the 'Street Child Cricket World Cup'

The city of Chennai has always welcomed the sport of cricket with open arms, and has played the perfect host to several national and international tournaments. Come September, Chennai will witness another cricket tournament, but one with a difference - the Street Child Cricket World Cup 2023.
Organised by Street Child United in partnership with Shree Dayaa Foundation, the tournament will take place at Amir Mahal, the official residence of the Nawab of Arcot from September 20 to 30.
This is the second edition of the Street Child Cricket World Cup, and the tournament is envisioned as a platform for street children to not just showcase their sporting talent, but to also advocate for their rights

Deo Takes over as NRAI Chief

In an expected move, Kalikesh Singh Deo took over the reins of the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI). The NRAI Governing Body unanimously approved the handover to Deo.
Deo was the senior vice-president before taking over from Raninder Singh, who went on a long leave after the Sports Ministry demanded an election for the top post.
The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) was founded in 1951 with a view to promote and popularize the shooting sports in India. The first speaker of Lok Sabha, G.V. Mavlankar was the founder and the first president of NRAI followed by. Govind Vallabh Pant, Lal Bahadur Shastri,. Y. B. Chauhan, G.S. Dhillon and. Joginder Singh. Raninder Singh has served as president since December 2010.
The NRAI is affiliated to the Indian Olympic Association and the International Shooting Sport Federation as well as the Asian Shooting Confederation and other international bodies.

Aleksander Ceferin Re-elected UEFA President Unopposed Until 2027

Aleksander Ceferin was re-elected unopposed as Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) president at the Ordinary Congress of European Soccer's governing body in Lisbon. The Slovenian has been re-elected to a four-year term that will last until 2027.
Ceferin was elected as UEFA's seventh president in 2016 to replace Michel Platini, who was barred from football administration in 2015 for ethics violations and was forced to resign from UEFA in 2016 after losing an appeal against his ban.

Peru Removed as Host of 2023 FIFA Under-17 World Cup

Peru was stripped of hosting the men's Under-17 World Cup because FIFA said that the country was not ready to stage the tournament later this year (2023).
FIFA did not name a replacement host for the 24-team tournament scheduled to be played from Nov. 10-Dec. 2.
The decision came one week after FIFA took the men's Under-20 World Cup from Indonesia because that country did not want to host Israel at its tournament.
FIFA cited Peru's inability "to fulfill its commitments to completing the infrastructure required to stage the tournament."
FIFA had picked both Peru and Indonesia in 2019 to host the respective 2021 editions of the tournaments. Both were delayed because of the coronavirus pandemic.

New Zealand's Kim Cotton Becomes First Female Umpire to Officiate Men's T20I Match

In April during the second T20I match between Sri Lanka and New Zealand in Dunedin, New Zealand, Kim Cotton became the first woman to serve as an on-field umpire in a men's international match between two full-member teams, making history. Cotton has previously worked as an on-field and TV umpire in 54 women's T20Is and 24 women's ODIs, as well as officiating at the women's T20 and ODI World Cups from 2018 to 2023.
Earlier, Claire Polosak became the first woman to officiate in a men's Test match as the fourth umpire during the third Test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy between India and Australia in Sydney in January 2021. Moreover, in the Ranji Trophy tournament held earlier this year, female umpires Vrinda Rathi, N. Janani, and V. Gayathri made history by becoming the first women to perform on-field umpiring duties in the tournament's history.
