Argentina Replaces Indonesia as under-20 World Cup Host

FIFA selected Argentina to host the under-20 soccer World Cup after revoking the hosting rights from Indonesia. This decision was made after Indonesia's football association cancelled the draw scheduled to take place in Bali due to the governor's refusal to host Israel's team.
The South American Football Confederation Congress received the official bid from the Argentine Football Association to host the under-20 soccer World Cup from May 20 to June 11. The tournament's official draw will take place in Zurich. Argentina, which has won a record six titles, last hosted the under-20 World Cup in 2001. Additionally, it is in the running to jointly host the 2030 World Cup finals alongside Uruguay, Chile, and Paraguay.
The under-20 soccer World Cup, also known as the FIFA U-20 World Cup, is a biennial international football tournament organized by FIFA for the national teams of men's under-20 age group. The tournament was first held in 1977 as the FIFA World Youth Championship, and since then, it has been held every two years except for a brief period from 1979-1985. The tournament has been won by a variety of countries, with Argentina having the most wins with a total of six titles. The most recent tournament was held in 2019 and was won by Ukraine.

Gary Ballance Retires from All Forms of Cricket

Gary Ballance, a left-handed batsman, announced his retirement from all forms of cricket. He initially made his debut for Zimbabwe and played for them under a two-year contract. He later went on to play for England and appeared in 23 Test matches. Additionally, he played one Test, one T20I, and five ODIs for Zimbabwe, during which he scored five Test hundreds, including a score of 137 against the West Indies. However, his career took a downturn after 2017, and he was also accused of using racist language against his teammate Azeem Rafiq, which was deemed as 'institutional racism' in the Yorkshire County.

Premier Handball League Signs Two New Franchises

With less than two months until the season opener of the inaugural Premier Handball League (PHL), sanctioned by the South Asian Handball Federation and affiliated with the Asian Handball Federation (AHF), two new teams became part of the PHL journey. After Maharashtra Ironmen, PHL announced that Golden Eagles Uttar Pradesh and Garvit Gujarat became the second and third franchisees of the inaugural edition of the league, respectively.
The team from Uttar Pradesh is owned by the Pavna Group of Industries from Aligarh, headed by Mr. Swapnil Jain, who serves as the Managing Director of the entity. Mr. Jain has a keen interest in the fields of education, sports, industry, and social work and has been actively working towards contributing to society in various manners. Prior to Golden Eagles, Mr. Jain's prominent investment in sports came in the form of Ascus Cricket, which manufactures cricket bats and associated accessories.
On the other hand, Garvit Gujarat is a first-time investment in sports by Garvit Sports Private Limited (GSPL) headed by former India international Mr. Roop Kumar Naidu, who serves as the Founder and Director of the organisation. Mr. Naidu's association with handball dates back to the year 1979, and he was also a part of the first Indian Handball Team to make its debut in an international competition in the same year. During his career between 1979 and 1987, Mr. Naidu also went on to represent India at the 1982 Asian Games held in New Delhi

USA, Mexico Set to Jointly Bid for 2027 Women's World Cup

The United States and Mexico will bid to co-host the 2027 Women's World Cup, the football federations from the two countries said. US Soccer and the Mexican Football Federation (MFF) announced their plans one month before a May 19 deadline set by FIFA for hopeful host nations to formally submit bids.
The United States has hosted the Women's World Cup twice before, in 1999 and 2003, while Mexico has never held the tournament. If successful, the tournament would take place one year after the 2026 men's World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
The US-Mexico bid will face competition from a joint bid by Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands as well as bids from South Africa and Brazil.

World Surfing League Event to be Held in India for 1st Time

In a big boost to the Olympic sport in India, the country is gearing up to host its first-ever World Surf League (WSL) event at the UNESCO Heritage Town of Mamallapuram (around 50 km from the capital city Chennai) in Tamil Nadu.
As per Arun Vasu, President of the Surfing Federation of India, the surfing competition which is scheduled between August 14-20 is expected to attract almost 100 surfers from across 14 nations and a dozen surfers from across India. The upcoming event is titled 'International Surf Open - Tamil Nadu' and is expected to expose foreign surfers to the sport in Indian waters, popularise the niche sport in India and offer a huge platform for the country's emerging surfing talent.

Suryakumar Yadav Named Wisden's Leading T20I Cricketer

The Indian duo of Suryakumar Yadav and Harmanpreet Kaur added another feather to their outstanding crown after bagging the Wisden Almanack's leading cricketer in the World awards.
Suryakumar won the honour of Wisden Almanack's leading T20I cricketer while Harmanpreet Kaur became the first Indian woman to win the Cricketer of the Year award.
The year 2022 in T20Is was almost like a net session for Suryakumar. Wherever he went, he amassed runs for fun: a total of 1164 of them at a stunning strike rate of 187.43. This included 68 sixes, something no T20I batter has ever done in a calendar year.

Vedaant Wins 5 Gold Medals in Malaysia Swimming Championships 2023

Actor R. Madhavan's son Vedaant Madhavan won five gold medals in swimming at the Malaysian Invitational Age Group Championships.
He won 5 golds for India in (50 m, 100m, 200 m, 400 m, and 1500 m).
The Malaysian Invitational Age Group Championships, 2023, were held in Kuala Lumpur.

BCCI Hikes Cash Prize for Domestic Tournaments

The BCCI announced an increase in prize money for the domestic tournaments with the Ranji Trophy winners set to receive a whopping cash reward of Rs. 5 crore this year. According to the new pay structure, Ranji Trophy winners, who currently get a cheque of Rs. 2 crore, will be receiving Rs. 5 crore, while the runners-up and losing semi-finalists will get Rs. 3 crore and Rs. 1 crore respectively.
The cash prize for Irani Cup too was doubled with the winners getting Rs. 50 lakh instead of Rs. 25 lakh, and while the team finishing runners-up currently don't receive any cash reward, they will get Rs. 25 lakh from now on.
In Duleep Trophy, the champions will get Rs. 1 crore and runners-up team will be receiving Rs. 50 lakh, while winners of Vijay Hazare Trophy will now be getting a cheque of Rs. 1 crore and the team finishing second best Rs. 50 lakh.
Deodhar Trophy winners are set to get richer by Rs. 40 lakh and the losing finalists will get Rs. 20 lakh. Similarly, Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy champions will be receiving a cheque of Rs. 80 lakh and the losing team will get Rs. 40 lakh.

Haryana's Narwal Wins Air Pistol Trials

Haryana teenager Shiva Narwal clinched the men's 10m air pistol event at the national shooting trials held at the MP State Shooting Academy Range.
Uttar Pradesh's Neha emerged triumphant in the women's event on the penultimate day of the trials for the Group A rifle and pistol shooters.
Shiva outgunned Punjab's Arjun Singh Cheema 17-7 in the gold medal match, while Neha overcame Rhythm Sangwan 17-9 in the women's title-decider.

Kagiso Rabada becomes the fastest player to take 100 wickets in IPL

During a match between Punjab Kings and Gujarat Titans at IS Bindra Stadium, Kagiso Rabada achieved a significant milestone by taking his 100th wicket in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He became the fastest bowler to reach this milestone in terms of matches played, completing it in his 64th IPL match. Rabada, who is a right-arm pacer, surpassed Lasith Malinga, who reached the 100-wicket mark in his 70th match. The wicket that led to Rabada's achievement was that of Wriddhiman Saha.

Rublev gets long-awaited reward with Monte Carlo title

Andrey Rublev made the most of Holger Rune's nerves to win a see-saw Monte Carlo final 5-7 6-2 7-5 on Sunday, as the Russian's talent was finally rewarded with a Masters title.
The fifth seed stayed composed when it mattered to eventually run down his 19-year-old opponent and claim the most prestigious title of his career.
Rublev, 25, was 4-1 down in the decider but ground his way back into the contest to prevail on his second match point with an ace at a sun-drenched Monte Carlo Country Club.
It was Rublev's third attempt in a Masters final after failing at the final hurdle here in Monte Carlo and in Cincinnati in 2021.

Indian Women's League players to get minimum salary of Rs 3.2 lakh per year: AIFF

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has decided to revamp and restructure women's football in the country, in line with the Strategic Roadmap Vision 2047 as decided on January 7, 2023. In a press conference in the national capital on Friday, AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey and Secretary General Shaji Prabhakaran announced a few plans apart from the restructuring of women's football that was discussed during the Executive committee meeting.
To give women's football a refreshed look and create improved economic opportunities, the AIFF's has taken up the task of revamping the Indian Women's League (IWL). Starting next season, it will be mandatory for the top eight participating teams in the IWL, to have a minimum 10 Indian players on a fully professional annual contract worth a minimum of Rs 3.2 lakhs.
