Nation's First Drive in Vaccination Center in Mumbai

  • The Nation's first 'Drive in Vaccination Center' was inaugurated by MP Rahul Shewale in Mumbai. This center has been set up in the parking lot of Kohinoor Square Tower at Dadar. This first of its kind 'Drive-in Vaccination Center' facility has been made available to the citizens at a time when people with disabilities are facing difficulties in getting to the vaccination center.
  • The center also provides transportation facilities to the citizens who do not have their own vehicles. The vaccination has been started and the facility is available for all sections of society. MP Rahul Shewale informed that this facility will be provided in other multi-parking lots in the city, after assessing the success of this first project.

IIT Roorkee Ties up with Edtech Company to Offer High-quality Tech Programmes

  • E&ICT Academy, IIT Roorkee signed an MoU with Great Learning, an edtech company in India, for launching the online certification programmes in Software Development, Cloud Computing, and Data Science.
  • The programmes, offered under the aegis of IIT Roorkee, are of two types -- advanced certificate programme in Full Stack Software Development spanning 10 months with specialization in either Cloud Computing or Python for Data Science, and shorter duration certificate programmes in Front End Software Development, Back End Software Development, Cloud Computing and Python for Data Science.
  • E&ICT Academy IIT Roorkee programmes aim to bridge the talent gap in these areas and prepare professionals for these job opportunities.

K L University Launches Digital Learning Portal for Online Degrees

  • KL Deemed to be University, one of the premier Category 1 universities by UGC in Andhra Pradesh has announced the launch of its online learning portal klonline.edu.in for students seeking to complete online degree programmes during the pandemic.
  • The portal will offer the finest quality undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) degrees in multiple domains, including BBA, BCA, BCom, MA, MSc, with innovative and emerging specializations as the first few degree programmes that move online.
  • The University will facilitate placement assistance for these courses. Students will also get industry exposure as many of the classes will be conducted by industry professionals.

XLRI Jamshedpur Appoints Fr Paul Fernandes, SJ as the New Director

  • The Xavier School of Management, Jamshedpur has appointed Fr Paul Fernandes, SJ, as the new Director of the institute with immediate effect. He has taken charge of the position by succeeding Fr P Christie, SJ.
  • An alumnus of XLRI Jamshedpur, Fr. Paul. Fernandes (1986 Batch) had worked at XLRI for many years in various capacities. Besides being a faculty member, he was the financial controller.
  • He was also the founder chairperson of Father Arrupe Centre for Excellence (FACE), now rechristened as 'FACES.'
  • Fr. Paul earned his PhD in Economics and Ethics from KU, WWF Ingolstadt, Germany. He has an MSc degree in Economics and an MA Licentiate in Applied Ethics from the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium.

SC Directs Rajasthan Private Schools to Reduce Fees for 2020-21 Session

  • The Supreme Court bench noted that schools and educational institutions that have been closed for the past one year and continue to do so should reduce fees as their running and overhead costs of maintenance, electricity, petrol/diesel to run generators, water costs, and stationery charges have come down with various facilities provided on campus remaining closed.
  • The Supreme Court directed Rajasthan private schools to reduce the annual school fees for the 2020-21 period by 15 per cent.
  • The SC was hearing an appeal filed by some private schools of Rajasthan against an HC order upholding the Rajasthan government's direction to schools to give a deduction of 30 percent in fees.

Congo Declares the End of the 12th Ebola Outbreak

  • The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) officially declared the end of the 12th Ebola outbreak, which killed six people in its eastern province of North Kivu.
  • Since the outbreak declared in February 2021, a total of 12 cases were reported, including six deaths in the province.
  • According to the aid group Medecins Sans Frontieres, the outbreak was contained using Merck's Ebola vaccine, which was given to more than 1,600 of the patients' contacts and contacts of contacts.
  • The cases were genetically linked to the 2018-20 Ebola epidemic that killed more than 2,200 people, the second-highest toll recorded in the disease's history.

Punjab CM Sets Up VCs Committee to Work Out Exam Reforms

  • Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh constituted a committee of vice chancellors to work out examination reforms and review curriculums. The committee, under the chairmanship of VC GNDU, will also look into introduction of new courses and digital education and will submit its report within 60 days.
  • Underlining the need to keep up with the transformation taking place globally in education, the Chief Minister tasked the committee with drafting a plan to bring the state's education system at par with the world. New and relevant courses should be identified to ensure that the students are in tune with the changes taking place in global education.
  • The Chief Minister also directed that all new colleges in the state must start classes from academic session 2021-22.

Education Ministry Asks IITs, NITs, IIITs to Defer Offline Exams

  • The Education Ministry wrote to all centrally-funded educational institutions (CFTIs) asking them to postpone their offline examinations scheduled this month. The ministry cited the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic behind the request. Online tests, however, can continue.
  • Higher Education Secretary Amit Khare in his letter said that the decision on examinations will be reviewed again in the first week of June. "The institutions have been further advised to ensure that if anyone in the institution needs any assistance it should be provided immediate possible help so that he/she comes out of the distress at the earliest. All Institutions have to encourage eligible persons to go for vaccination and ensure that everyone follows Covid-19 appropriate behaviour to remain safe," Khare wrote in his letter.
  • The centrally funded institutes include the Central Universities, Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs).

Calicut University Begins Online Application Process for UG, PG Entrance Exams

  • The Calicut University, Kerala, will be admitting undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) admissions 2021 on the basis of entrance test and other criteria. The university has issued individual prospectuses for CU (UG and PG) admission 2021 at the official website i.e. cuonline.ac.in.
  • The eligible and interested candidates can apply online for admission as per the schedule indicated in the prospectus. The last date to apply for admissions is May 10, 2021.
  • The Calicut University admission forms 2021 have already been released online at the official website. The list of various courses offered by the university is mentioned on the official website. Candidates may note that admission to most UG programmes such as BHM and BCom (Hons) will be done on the basis of marks secured in the entrance test. Similarly, for PG programs such as MA, MSc and MCom, admission will be done on the basis of marks secured in the entrance test.
