CBSE Forms Panel for Assessment of Class 12 Students

  • The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) constituted a 13-member committee to work out an objective criterion for assessment of class 12 students after their board exams were cancelled in view of the pandemic. The panel will submit its report within 10 days.
  • The members of the panel include--Ministry of Education Joint Secretary Vipin Kumar; Delhi Education Director Udit Prakash Rai; Kenridya Vidyalaya Sangathan Commissioner Nidhi Pandey; Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti Commissioner Vinayak Garg; Chandigarh School Education Director Rubinderjit Singh Brar; CBSE Director (IT) Antriksh Johri and CBSE Director (Academics) Joseph Emanuel.
  • The panel will also have one representative each from UGC and NCERT and two representatives from schools.

Teacher Eligibility Test Certificate Made Valid for Lifetime

  • Union government has extended validity period of Teachers Eligibility Test (TET) qualifying certificate from 7 years to lifetime with retrospective effect from 2011.
  • Now, respective state government and union territories will take action to revalidate or issue fresh TET certificates for candidates whose period of 7 years has expired already.
  • This decision will make changes in guidelines of February 11, 2011 of the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) which provided that, TET would be conducted by state governments and validity of TET Pass certificate was 7 years from date of passing TET.

IIT Kanpur Launches Four eMasters Programmes

  • The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur) launched 4 eMasters programmes aimed at enabling a seamless remote learning process during the pandemic. The 4 emasters include programs in Communication Systems, Cybersecurity, Power Sector Regulation, Economics and Management, and Commodity Markets and Risk Management.
  • The programmes are designed to help upskill working professionals, with industry experience and thus, help them explore a wider range of career options. Corporates may sponsor these programmes for their employees.

GMAT Aspirants Can Now Select Exam slots 6 Months in Advanced

  • Aspirants of Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT), administered by the Graduation Management Admission Council (GMAC), will now be able to schedule online exam appointments up to 6 months in advance.
  • The test now also has the provision to select the exam section order and candidates can view unofficial score immediately. Applicants will have to demonstrate their writing and critical thinking skills with the addition of the Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) section. They will have the option to take advantage of two eight-minute-long breaks to prepare themselves for the next section of the exam.
  • Indian citizens can now also use their Aadhaar Card as valid identity proof during the GMAT online registration process. While passport remains the only acceptable identity proof for taking the exam at a test centre, Aadhaar Card has been introduced as an alternative for only online GMAT exams.

Ex-CEA Arvind Subramanian to Join Brown University as Senior Fellow

  • Former chief economic adviser Arvind Subramanian, who had resigned as a professor at Ashoka University in March this year (2021), will join Brown University's Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs as a senior fellow on July 1.
  • Subramanian, an eminent economist, had joined the Ashoka University as a professor in the Department of Economics in July 2020 and put in his papers on March 18 this year. His resignation came soon after political commentator Pratap Bhanu Mehta left the Sonipat, Haryana-based university.

Gujarat to Grant Centre of Excellence Status 7 Universities

  • Gujarat government is all set to grant Centre of Excellence (CoE) status to seven private universities in state.
  • In-principal approval was given by Chief Minister Vijay Rupani. University Grants Commission (UGC) encourages higher education institutions to attain excellence in specific areas of academic as well as research work. CoE can an institute of strategic or security-relate importance, notified by state government. Institution of Eminence can also be given CoE tag.
  • The seven Universities are: CEPT University, Nirma University, Pandit Deendayal Energy University, Ahmedabad University, Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Information and Communication Technology (DAIICT), Marwadi University and Charotar University of Science & Technology.
  • CoE tag to universities will help in bringing quality education and give them an international touch. Tag will also boost research, innovation and establish a culture of creating start- ups.

Byju's and Google Tie Up to Offer Learning Solution to Schools

  • Edtech company Byju's, which has 95 million registered students on its flagship learning app, has partnered with tech firm Google to aid the continuity of online learning for both teachers and students. This integration of Google Workspace for Education with Byju's will offer a collaborative and personalised digital platform for classroom organisation, available for free to participating educational institutions.
  • With a commitment to digital education, Google Workspace for Education will combine Byju's pedagogy to empower educators in their journey towards digital transformation. Built on the Vidyartha platform, this partnership will provide direct access to Byju's extensive math and science pedagogy. This includes visually-rich learning solutions, including chapter-wise slides, readymade assignments, data banks, summary docs, handouts, tests, and more.

IIT-Ropar Develops 'AmbiTAG' India's First Indigenous Temperature Data Logger

  • Indian Institute of Technology, Ropar (IIT Ropar) in Punjab has developed a first-of-its-kind IoT device, "AmbiTag" that records real-time ambient temperature during the transportation of perishable products, vaccines and even body organs and blood. That recorded temperature further helps to know whether that particular item transported from anywhere in the world is still usable or perished because of temperature variation. This information is particularly critical for vaccines including the Covid-19 vaccine, organs and blood transportation.
  • Shaped like a USB device, AmbiTag continuously records the temperature of its immediate surroundings from -40 to +80 degrees in any time zone for a full 90 days on a single charge.
  • Most of the similar devices available in the international market record data only for a duration of 30- 60 days.
  • The recorded data can be retrieved by connecting the USB with any computer. The device has been developed under Technology Innovation Hub – AWaDH (Agriculture and Water Technology Development Hub) and its Startup ScratchNest. AWaDH is a Govt of India project.

Syed Akbaruddin Joins Kautilya School of Public Policy as Dean

  • Syed Akbaruddin, former permanent representative of India to the United Nations, joined the Kautilya School of Public Policy as its dean.
  • The public policy institute said that his appointment is a testimony to its commitment to provide students an exposure to the best minds from the policy fraternity.
  • Akbaruddin, who joined the foreign service in 1985, was the Ministry of External Affair's spokesperson between 2012 and 2015 and he retired last April as India's permanent representative to the United Nations.

CBSE, ISC Class 12 Board Exams Cancelled this Year

  • The union government announced the cancellation of CBSE Board exams for Class 12 in view of the prevailing coronavirus situation. The decision was taken at a high-level review meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
  • Hours after the development, Indian School Certificate (ISC) board exams for Class 12 too have been cancelled.
  • The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) had on April 14 announced cancellation of class 10 exams and postponement of class 12 exams in view of the surge in coronavirus cases.
  • The final decision on compiling results is yet to be taken.
  • Class 12 results will be made as per a well-defined objective criterion in a time-bound manner.
