IIT-Delhi to Offer MTech Course in Electric Mobility from this Year

  • The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi will start a new postgraduate (PG) programme in electric mobility from the academic session 2021-22. The MTech course in electric mobility will be offered by the institute's Centre for Automotive Research and Tribology (CART).
  • The programme will cover key aspects related to electric vehicles, drivetrain, chargers and charging infrastructure, battery energy storage systems, battery management system, reusability of energy storage elements, reliability, automotive health monitoring, automotive NVH (Noise, Vibration, and Harshness), vehicle dynamics, autonomous and connected vehicles, vehicular telematics, and materials for an electric vehicle, along with hands-on practice and design in laboratories.

Masai School Sharpens Focus on Career-linked Learning

  • Edtech start-up Masai School has acquired Bengaluru-based design institute Design Shift Academy to strengthen its existing curriculum by introducing comprehensive courseware on UI & UX Design, and Product Management. The acquisition takes the firm from a coding-centric to a career-focused learning platform. The start-up had recently closed its $5 million Series-A funding round in March.
  • Founded in 2019, Masai School's vision is to be able to help young professionals launch their careers in a field of their choice, irrespective of what background they come from. Through the Income Share Agreement (ISA) model, the company is continues its efforts towards democratising access to quality education.
  • Design Shift Academy was established in 2017 by Preeti Sheokand and Sudhir Mor, both UX designers. Offering weekend skilling courses, this boot strapped company started as a home based business but today has a market across India, Turkey and Australia.

Indian School of Business Inks Partnership with University of Sydney Business School

  • The Indian School of Business (ISB) and the University of Sydney Business School (USBS) have entered a five-year partnership, which is one of the most comprehensive of its kind.
  • These two world-class business schools have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to promote research collaboration, academic exchange, and student mobility.
  • Cooperation between the two schools will be explored in academic research, doctoral research, coursework education, corporate engagement, and contributing to policy development in and for a post-COVID world.
  • ISB's comprehensive partnership with University of Sydney Business School will usher in new insights based on multidisciplinary research that will contribute to management thought leadership and in designing new trajectories in management education globally.
  • The partnership is ISB's first comprehensive partnership with an Australian School in the business and management field.

QS World University Rankings

  • The Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, is the world's top research university as per the citations per faculty indicator, while the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati, is ranked 41st in the category, according to the coveted QS World University Rankings released in June 2021.
  • The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) got a perfect score of 100 out of 100 for the citations per faculty (CPF) metric in the analysis by London-based Quacquarelli Symonds (QS).
  • In the overall rankings, three Indian institutions have figured in the top 200 universities of the world list.

Competition Commission Clears Byju's Buyout of Aakash Educational Services

  • The Competition Commission has approved ed-tech startup Byju's proposed acquisition of Aakash Educational Services Ltd (AESL).
  • The deal, estimated to be worth around USD 1 billion, which will bolster Byju's presence in the test preparation segment in the country, was announced in April this year.
  • Competition Commission of India (CCI) said it has approved the proposed combination relating to Think & Learn Pvt Ltd (Byju's) acquisition of certain stake of AESL and thereafter their merger.
  • "The proposed combination will result in merger of AESL into Byju's, as a consequence of which, Byju's will be the surviving entity. As such, Byju's shall effectively acquire complete and sole control over AESL.
  • Byju's provides online educational services while AESL offers curriculum-based coaching for K-12 students and test preparatory services for various competitive examinations.

JMI Improves Rank in London based THE Asia University Rankings-2021

  • Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has been ranked at 180th position by the London-based Times Higher Education (THE) Asia University Rankings- 2021. With a remarkable jump of 18 position JMI reached to 180th rank improving its position from 198 last year.
  • The Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings assessed performance of 551 universities from 30 countries on the same 13 performance indicators/parameters as the THE World University Rankings, but they were recalibrated to reflect the attributes of Asia's institutions.
  • The universities were judged across all their core missions teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook to provide the most comprehensive and balanced comparisons available. JMI has scored maximum points for its teaching, citations and industry income.

PMK Calls upon TN Govt. to Make Tamil Compulsory Medium of Instruction in Schools

  • The founder leader of Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), S. Ramadoss, has called upon the Tamil Nadu government to bring in legislation to make Tamil the compulsory medium of instruction in schools across the state.
  • The PMK leader said that Section (F) of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act (RTE), 2009 says that "Mother tongue must be the medium of instruction as far as practicable".

IIT Madras to Offer Executive PG programme in Data Science and Machine Intelligence

  • The Robert Bosch Centre for Data Science and AI (RBCDSAI) at IIT Madras has started a 12-month postgraduate (PG) level advanced programme in Applied Data Science and Machine Intelligence. The programme has been launched in partnership with TalentSprint.  
  • Applications for the first cohort of the PG programme, which starts in August 2021, are now available. Candidates can access more details about eligibility, fee and apply online at  
  • According to the World Economic Forum, Data Science, Data Architecture, Data Analysis, and Data Engineering are on track to become the most favoured career paths by 2022, and the US Bureau of Labour Statistics predicts 11.5 million career openings in these fields by 2026. 

Uttarakhand Has Lowest Child Sex Ratio at Birth in India

  • Uttarakhand is the worst-performing state in the country in terms of child sex ratio at birth, according to the NITI Aayog`s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) India Index 2020-21.
  • According to the SDG data, the hill state's child sex ratio is 840 as compared to the national average of 899. Chhattisgarh has emerged as the best performer in this category, where the male-to-female ratio at birth stands at 958 - much above the national average.
  • Kerala is placed second with a sex ratio of 957, as per the NITI Aayog data. States like Punjab and Haryana have made significant progress in this category. While Haryana recorded birth of 843 females per 1000 males, the number has reached 890 in Punjab.

5 States, UTs Get Highest Grade in Performance Grading Index 2019-20

  • Punjab, Chandigarh, Tamil Nadu, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Kerala occupy the highest grade A++ in 2019-20 in the field of school education according to the Performance Grading Index (PGI) released by the Education Ministry.
  • The grading index which analyses the performance of states on 70 parameters has put Delhi, Gujarat, Haryana, Rajasthan, Puducherry, Dadra and Nagar Haveli in the A+ category.
  • Punjab has scored the maximum points for governance and management; Bihar and Meghalaya have scored the lowest in terms of infrastructure and facilities.
  • The index helps the states and UTs to pinpoint the gaps and accordingly prioritise areas for intervention to ensure that the school education system is robust at every level.
  • According to the index, most of the states and UTs have improved their grade in PGI 2019-20 compared to earlier years.
