UN's World Tourism Organization Award

  • Three Indian villages have been nominated in the Best Tourism Village category for the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Award. Madhya Pradesh's Ladhpura Khas village that is situated near the town of Orchha, is one such village. The other two villages are Meghalaya's Kongthong village, and Telangana's Pochampally village.
  • Indian village tourism has taken off ever since the nation's Rural Tourism Project began across states. The idea behind such a project is to give shape to the concept of village tourism, which is not prevalent in the country.

French Abortion Drama 'Happening' Tops Venice Film Festival

  • Audrey Diwan's 1960s abortion drama 'L'Evenement' (Happening) won the Golden Lion at the 78th Venice International Film Festival, while the runner up honour went to Paolo Sorrentino's semi-autobiographical 'The Hand of God'.
  • Ms. Diwan's film about a French college student who finds herself with an unwanted pregnancy was the unanimous choice from the prestigious jury that included Oscar winners Bong Joon Ho and Chloé Zhao.
  • The competition this year was robust, including well-received films like Jane Campion's 'The Power of the Dog', Pedro Almodóvar's 'Parallel Mothers', Maggie Gyllenhaal's 'The Lost Daughter' and 'The Hand of God'. Twenty-one films were vying for the prize, which has become a promising early indicator of a film's Oscars prospects.

Mumbai Teen Named 2021 International Young Eco-Hero for Environment Project

  • Twelve-year old Ayaan Shankta, an environment activist, has been named as the 2021 International Young Eco-Hero in recognition of his efforts to solve tough environmental problems.
  • Ayaan Shankta won the third place in the 8-14 age category for his project Conservation and Rehabilitation of Powai Lake.
  • He is one of the 25 young environmental activists from across the globe honoured by the Action for Nature (AFN) as a 2021 International Young Eco-Hero, an award that recognizes eco-conscious youth aged 8 to 16 who are taking crucial steps to solve tough environmental problems.

  • The UNESCO King Sejong Literacy Prize was awarded to:
  • Limitless Horizons Ixil in Guatemala for its 'Broadcasting Bilingual Stories: Promoting Interactive Literacy Programming in Rural Guatemala' programme.
  • National Institute of Open Schooling in India for its 'Enabling education of persons with disabilities through technology enabled inclusive learning material, with specific focus on Indian sign language-based content' programme.
  • Puku Children's Literature Foundation in South Africa for its 'Using digital technologies to promote children's literature in South Africa's indigenous languages' programme.
  • The UNESCO Confucius Prize for Literacy was awarded to:
  • ONG GA-TIC Côte d'Ivoire in Côte d'Ivoire for its 'Functional literacy for traders in Abidjan through the use of ICT' programme.
  • Ain-Shams University in Egypt for its 'Ain Shams University experience in organizing online literacy classes for rural areas in Egypt' programme.
  • Construyendo y Creciendo in Mexico for its 'Building & Growing' programme.

Shailendra Singh Wins Global Award in Turtle Conservation

  • Indian biologist Shailendra Singh was awarded the Behler Turtle Conservation Award for bringing three critically endangered turtle conservation species back from the brink of extinction. Shailendra Singh was named to lead the Turtle Survival Alliance (TSA)/ Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) India turtle programme.
  • The award has been bestowed by several global bodies involved in turtle conservation such as Turtle Survival Alliance, IUCN/SSC Tortoise and Freshwater Turtle Specialist Group, Turtle Conservancy, and Turtle Conservation Fund.
  • The Behler Turtle Conservation Award was established in 2006 to recognise outstanding achievements, contributions and leadership excellence in international turtle conservation and biology.
