FTII Declared 'Institution Deemed to be University

  • The Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, was officially notified as an 'Institution Deemed to be University' by the Union Ministry of Education. The move marks a milestone in the institute's journey and opens new doors for academic autonomy, curriculum flexibility, and research innovation in cinema and television studies.
  • FTII was established in 1960 by the Government of India and was originally known as the Film Institute of India.
  • The Film Institute of India was renamed the Film and Television Institute of India in 1971.

IISc Tops Times Higher Education Asia Rankings 2025

  • The Times Higher Education (THE) Asia University Rankings 2025 were unveiled, showcasing the top universities in Asia. With 853 universities from 35 countries and territories included in this year's rankings, the list highlights the leading institutions excelling in research, teaching, and innovation across the continent. The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) secured the top spot for Indian universities, ranked 38th overall in Asia. However, many Indian institutions saw a drop in their rankings compared to last year, signalling the evolving competition in higher education.

  • Both the robotics teams -- Team Matrix and Team Eureka -- of Dhirubhai Ambani International School (DAIS), Mumbai, emerged as global finalists, competing head-to-head in an unprecedented all-DAIS Grand Final at the FIRST® Tech Challenge World Championship 2025 in Houston.
  • This achievement marks the first time any team from India has won the FTC World Championship, placing India firmly on the global STEM map.
  • Organised by FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), the world championship was held at the George R. Brown Convention Centre in Houston, Texas, drawing over 50,000 attendees and 256 elite teams from more than 30 countries.
  • DAIS's Team Matrix, winners of the Ochoa Division, emerged as the FTC World Champions after a thrilling final against Team Eureka, champions of the Edison Division -- both representing DAIS.

IIT Guwahati Launches 4-year Biomedical Science Programme

  • The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati launched a new four-year Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Biomedical Science and Engineering. The course will be conducted by the Jyoti and Bhupat Mehta School of Health Sciences and Technology (JBMSHST).
  • This course incorporates the expertise of IIT Guwahati, AIIMS Guwahati, and NIPER Guwahati. Practical learning, experience in clinics, and special subjects that connect medicine and technology are what students will learn. Amit Shah Unveils 'HEALD' Initiative to Combat Liver Diseases across India

  • The Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS) marked a milestone with the launch of HEALD, Healthy Liver Education and Alcohol-associated Liver Disease Prevention, a first-of-its-kind nationwide initiative aimed at tackling liver disease in India on the occasion of World Liver Day.
  • HEALD is envisioned as a multi-sectoral program combining public education, early screening, psychological and medical treatment of alcohol use disorder, and liver disease management.
  • Union Home Minister Amit Shah, while unveiling the HEALD initiative and inaugurating India's first Integrated Liver Habilitation (LiHAB) Centre, applauded ILBS for setting a national example in healthcare innovation.

IIM Lucknow Appoints Prof Manmohan Prasad Gupta as New Director

  • Prof. Manmohan Prasad Gupta was appointed as the director of the Indian Institute of Management Lucknow (IIM Lucknow). Professor He succeeded Professor Archana Shukla. Professor Shukla finished her five-year term on April 4 last year (2024) and was directed to continue till the appointment of a regular director.
  • Manmohan Prasad Gupta had received a PhD from IIT Delhi.
  • IIM Lucknow was set up in 1984 as the fourth IIM by the Government of India. IIM Lucknow offers post-graduate diploma, fellowship and executive programs in management. The institute is ranked seventh in the category of "Management" in the NIRF 2024 rankings.
