Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar Retires as UGC Chairperson

  • Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar officially retired as Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), concluding a significant tenure that began in February 2022. During his time in office, he introduced several student-centric reforms that reshaped the landscape of higher education in India.
  • Before leading the UGC, Kumar served as the 12th Vice-Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) from 2016 to 2022. At IIT Delhi, where he is currently on lien, he held various key academic and research positions, including the NXP Chair Professorship, Chairman of the Electronics Group, and Coordinator of VLSI Design programs.

UGC's New Rules Will Ease Foreign Degree Recognition in India

  • The University Grants Commission (UGC) notified fresh regulations to make it easier for Indian students to get their foreign academic qualifications recognised in India. These rules, called the UGC (Recognition and Grant of Equivalence to Qualifications Obtained from Foreign Educational Institutions) Regulations, 2025, were officially rolled out.
  • These guidelines came at a time when more Indian students are studying abroad and returning with foreign credentials that often lead to confusion, delays, or rejections when applying to Indian institutions or jobs.
  • The new UGC regulations introduce an online system for granting equivalence certificates to foreign degrees. Students will no longer have to deal with multiple departments or wait endlessly for decisions. Now, all applications can be submitted through a dedicated portal, along with a fee and required documents.

Central Govt. to set up 728 Eklavya Model Residential School

  • The centre has set a target to set up 728 Eklavya Model Residential Schools benefiting around 3.5 lakh Schedule Tribe students across the country. As of date, a total number of 721 schools have been sanctioned across the country, out of which 477 schools are reported to be functional. Under the scheme, the government has decided to establish one Eklavya Model Residential School in every block having more than 50 per cent ST population and at least 20 thousand tribal persons. The Minister highlighted that the government is implementing several initiatives in collaboration with other government bodies to provide tribal students with access to digital and skill-based education.

Plaksha University Launches Binny Bansal Institute for AI, Robotics

  • Plaksha University, a technology university reimagining higher education and research in India, launched the Binny Bansal Institute for Inventing the Future (IIF). This research institute, backed by Binny Bansal, founder, Flipkart and xto10x, is focused on developing innovative solutions to tackle global challenges using frontier technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain and robotics. Binny Bansal has given startup funding of Rs. 70 crore to set up IIF.

National Education Society for Tribal Students Celebrates 7th Foundation Day

  • The National Education Society for Tribal Students (NESTS) proudly commemorated its 7th Foundation Day celebrating its unwavering dedication to the education and empowerment of tribal students across India. Established in year 2019 under the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India, NESTS has been instrumental in transforming the educational landscape for tribal communities through the administration of Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS).

Cyber Commandos Being Trained at IIT Madras

  • IIT Madras Pravartak Technologies Foundation successfully trained the inaugural batch of Cyber Commandos, a training course aimed at giving law enforcement officials advanced cybersecurity capabilities. The programme is focused on bolstering India's cybersecurity and improving the law enforcement's ability to combat cyber crimes.
  • An initiative of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, the 'Cyber Commandos' programme envisages creating a specialised force and is a critical step in bolstering India's cyber defence capabilities.
  • A formal valedictory function for 37 trained officers was conducted on April 1, 2025, at IIT Madras. Senior officers like Dr Sandeep Mittal, IPS, ADGP (Cyber Crime Wing), Tamil Nadu, Dr. Shankar Ram, CEO, and Mr. Balamurali Shankar, Chief Knowledge Officer, Pravartak attended the function.

Indian University Signs MoU with American University for Research Opportunities

  • Delhi Technological University (DTU) and the University of Houston (UH) signed a five-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to intensify academic and research collaboration. The agreement will be extended in 2030, if needed, with the view of facilitating knowledge exchange, collaborative research, and increased opportunities for students.
  • Under this collaboration, UH and DTU will engage in collaborative educational and research activities. Scholars and faculty will be able to participate in research exchanges, exchange academic publications, and work together on scholarly projects.
