Illinois Tech To Become First US University to Set up Degree cAmpus in India

  • In a first for the country, Illinois Institute of Technology (Illinois Tech), Chicago's only tech-focused university, received the green light from India's University Grants Commission (UGC) to set up a full-fledged degree-granting campus in India. The Illinois Tech Mumbai campus is scheduled to open in 2026, offering undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in computer science, engineering, and business.
  • This move makes Illinois Tech the first US university to be approved for an independent degree-awarding presence in India under the UGC's latest foreign campus regulations. Courses will follow the same experiential and industry-aligned curriculum as in Chicago, with internationally recruited faculty and visiting professors from the US.

West Bengal Becomes First State to Adopt Semester System in Class 12 Board Exams

  • West Bengal became the first state in India to fully move to a semester-based exam system for its Class 12 (Higher Secondary) board exams. The West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education (WBCHSE) confirmed that from the 2025-26 academic session, students will no longer follow the annual exam format, which had been in place since 1978.

Nod to Expand Academic Capacity, Infrastructure of Five IITs

  • Five Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are set to get an infrastructure boost along with more seats and faculty positions with the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approving their expansion.
  • The student strength at IIT Tirupati, IIT Palakkad, IIT Bhilai, IIT Jammu, and IIT Dharwad, will be increased by a total figure of more than 6500 over the next four years — an addition of 1364 students in the first year, 1738 students in the second year, 1767 students in the third year and 1707 students in the fourth year. This increase will be across undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD programmes, and will take the total student strength at these five IITs from 7111 to 13,687.

Indian Institute of Foreign Trade Receives Approval to Establish Off-Campus Centre at GIFT City, ...

  • The Ministry of Education, Government of India, approved the establishment of an off-campus centre of the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT), New Delhi, at GIFT City, Gandhinagar, Gujarat. The centre will be set up in accordance with the UGC (Institutions Deemed to be Universities) Regulations, 2023.
  • The approval under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, came after IIFT's successful compliance with the conditions laid out in the Letter of Intent (LoI) issued in January 2025. These included submission of a development roadmap to establish a multidisciplinary institution with over 1,000 students, availability of qualified faculty, detailed academic programmes, plans for a permanent campus, and creation of a state-of-the-art library.

BHU Appointed National Coordinator on SWAYAM for Institutions of National Importance

  • The Ministry of Education notified that the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) was designated as the national coordinator for Institutions of National Importance (INIs) on the SWAYAM platform. The decision was approved during the 26th meeting of the SWAYAM Board. Ashutosh Mohan of the Banaras Hindu University's Institute of Management Studies, was designated as the national coordinator for SWAYAM.
  • The University will now oversee the development and quality of online courses developed by more than 160 Institutes of National Importance (INIs) nationwide, including Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), and Central Universities.
