India Secures 11th Position at WorldSkills Competition

India secured 11th position in WorldSkills Competition 2022 (WSC 2022), with two silver medals, three bronze medals and 13 Medallions of Excellence. WorldSkills Competition is a global hunt known for raising the profile and recognition of skilled people.
The competition was conducted this year (2022) in a decentralised mode across Europe, North America and East Asia. In India, candidates were selected by the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) through IndiaSkills Competition.
This year, the competition witnessed an overwhelming participation from India in 50 skills with over 56 competitors, 50 experts, 11 interpreters and seven team leaders displaying their talents across industries, such as hotel receptionist, mechatronics, bakery, web technologies and more. The participation ranged across 50 skills wherein six skills comprised a team of two competitors each. Among the 56 competitors, 11 were women and 12 candidates were qualified from Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs).
This year (2022), India performed much better than the last time when the competition was held in 2019. In 2019, India had secured 13th position in the competition.

IIT Madras Launches New Interdisciplinary Dual Degree on Quantitative Finance

A new Interdisciplinary Dual Degree (IDDD) programme in quantitative finance was introduced by IIT Madras. It is open for BTech dual degree students, and will be jointly given by the management studies, computer science and engineering, and mathematics departments.
All undergraduate engineering students at IIT Madras are eligible to enrol in the IDDD in Quantitative Finance course. Students already enrolled have the option to start the IDDD in Quantitative Finance in the sixth semester.
The goal of the course is to bridge the gap between the application of contemporary product and process technologies and cutting-edge finance, allowing students to more readily adapt to new advancements in the field of finance.

Microland Launches 'Climate Smart Schools' to Nurture Climate Champions

Microland Foundation, a dedicated social development arm of Microland Limited, in partnership with local NGOs in Coonoor is fostering and promoting Environmental stewardship, believing it to be an integral long-term medium to build a healthy, sustainable community. From integrated waste management to introducing students to concepts and ideas on sustainable food production, water and energy conservation, these programmes have been not only been manifold & multilayered but also contextual to their local communities.
In partnership with Keystone Foundation & Department of Education, 10 Climate schools were inaugurated in a multi-stakeholder meet held in December 2022.
Microland Foundation has established its presence in the Nilgiris District with several initiatives and invites partnership from academia, corporate funders, government agencies, and individuals to develop a beneficial long-term collaboration. The Foundation has also been at the forefront of improving the state of education in the Nilgiris and its surrounding areas by providing guidance and support for students in need.

Two Indian Students from Augustana University Win the 2022 Call for Code Global Challenge

Two Indian students studying in the US-based Augustana University (AU) were named winners of the fifth annual 'Call for Code Global Challenge'. The two Indian students, Deepak Krishnaa Govindarajan and Prana Mohanty, were part of a team of four international students.
The team members were Deepak Krishnaa Govindarajan and Prana Mohanty of India, Abemelech Mesfin Belachew of Ethiopia and Manusmriti Budhathoki of Nepal. They developed an app called as 'GardenMate', which targets the problem of food waste with a marketplace for excess produce, as well as an educational platform for sustainable garden practices. The aim of this competition was to concentrate on and accelerate sustainability and combat climate change with open source-powered technology.

New UGC Norms for UG Courses Released

UGC declared a curriculum and credit framework for the Undergraduate programmes, which will provide an innovative and flexible higher education system for students. UGC developed this curriculum with a credit framework for undergraduate programmes. All the Higher Educational institutes have been advised by UGC to take necessary measures to adapt the curriculum.

PM Narendra Modi Inaugurates Goa Centre of All India Institute of Ayurveda

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Goa satellite centre of the All India Institute of Ayurveda. With this, the satellite centre in Goa opens doors of education in the field of Ayurveda for students of the Konkan and nearby areas.
The institute's location in Goa, a hub of tourists coming from all over the world, will also provide some of the best tertiary care facilities, such as Panchakarma, and will play a catalytic role in making the state a hub of medical tourism activities.
While the biodiversity and the medicinal plants found in the region will benefit the practice of Ayurveda, the AIIA satellite centre in Goa, which is an international tourist destination, will also boost the prospects of medical tourism in the country.

IIT Delhi Organises 4th Edition of Industry Day

IIT Delhi's flagship industry-academia partnership event, Industry Day 2022, was held on December 10, 2022.
The fourth edition of the daylong event gave an opportunity to the industry to witness how IIT Delhi is working to develop technologies that will benefit both the industry and society. Top leadership from over 15 large corporate and business houses were present at the event.
Industry Day 2022 centred on four themes that are woven into India's commitment to achieving its Sustainable Development Goals. The thematic sessions on Healthcare, Electric Vehicles, Communication Technologies, and Clean Energy and Environment will be attended by industry leaders, scientists, IIT Delhi faculty, research scholars, and students who will deliberate on fundamental concepts and new perspectives that will have an impact on civil society as a whole.
The annual event displayed the best of IIT Delhi's collaborative and interdisciplinary sharing through the breadth of the research presented.

India, Germany Strengthen Partnership to Promote Vocational Training, Education

The Indo-German joint working group met in New Delhi and encouraged Vocational Education and Training (VET). This was the 12th edition of the meeting, in which the experts assessed the skills gaps present in the country.
KK Dwivedi, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Government of India and Alexander Hochradel, Senior Policy Officer of division 222: ERASMUS; International Cooperation in Vocational Training, Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) co-chaired the meeting.
The aim of this meeting was to institutionalise a standard mechanism for VET to meet the skill requirements in priority sectors as per the German standards. To achieve this, a skill mapping exercise will be undertaken to assess the skill gaps. Based on this, bridge courses and upskilling programmes will be designed for skill training of Indian workers.
