Indian High Commission to Establish Hindi Chair at Sabaragamuwa University

The Indian High Commission signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka to establish a Hindi Chair. The MoU was signed by High Commissioner Gopal Baglay, and Vice Chancellor of Sabaragamuwa University Professor Udaya Rathnayake.
The MoU aims to establish the Hindi Chair as a part of India's cultural connection through the Indian Council for Cultural Relations. The Hindi chair will help in familiarizing students of Sabaragamuwa University with India, its history, and its culture. It will also pave the way for popularising Hindi by deputing Indian faculties.
The Indian Mission will also award a gold medal to the best-performing student of the Hindi Chair.
The Sabaragamuwa University is a public university located in Belihuloya, Balangoda, Sri Lanka.

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal Inaugurates School of Logistics, Waterways and Communication in...

The Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways and Ayush, Sarbananda Sonowal, along with Manik Saha, Chief Minister, Tripura inaugurated the School of Logistics, Waterways and Communication in Agartala, Tripura. The school will enable the rich pool of talent of the region to become world class experts in the transportation and logistics sector. In order to unlock the promised economic potential of the north-east, the school will be enable the innate capacity of human resources along our opulent waterways.
The Centre for Logistic, Communication and Waterways would facilitate in conducting studies/research, training, workshops/seminars for stakeholders like businesses, exporters/importers, Chambers of Commerce and Industries, local entrepreneurs, tourist operators etc. It has been set up under State Institute of Public Administration and Rural Development (SIPARD). SIPARD is an autonomous body funded by the Government of Tripura and partially by the Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India.

Assam to Assess Students in State-wide Drive

The Assam government will carry out 'Gunotsav 2023', a state-wide exercise to evaluate the performance of nearly 43 lakh students studying in over 44,500 schools, from January 18 to February 18, Education Minister Ranoj Pegu said.
Pegu said that the exercise will help the Education Department in ensuring quality education with improved learning outcomes.
Gunotsav 2023 will identify the learning gaps of each child and ensure quality education with grade-specific outcomes. It will also assess the performance of schools in areas such as scholastic, co-scholastic, availability and utilisation of infrastructure and community participation.

Uganda Ends WHO's Mandatory 42-day Countdown to be Declared Ebola-free

Uganda ended a 42-day countdown to be declared Ebola-free with no case reported in the period.
Uganda's Health Minister hailed the public for its vigilance in helping end the Ebola Sudan Virus outbreak, which was first reported in the country on September 20, 2022.
As per WHO, for a country to be declared Ebola-free, it should spend 42 days (two 21-day incubation cycles of the virus) without any new cases reported.

Govt. Approves Renaming of National Institute on Water after S.P. Mookerjee

The National Centre for Drinking Water, Sanitation and Quality in Kolkata was renamed as Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee National Institution of Water and Sanitation.
The Union Cabinet, at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, gave ex-post facto approval to the proposal to rename the institute set up on 8.72 acres of land in Joka, Kolkata.
The Prime Minister had inaugurated the institute in December 2022.
It is envisaged as a premier institute to develop capacities in states and Union territories in the field of public health engineering, drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene through training programmes.

IIT Madras Hosts its First-ever 'Inter IIT Cultural Meet'

IIT Madras hosted the Inter-IIT Cultural meet for the first time, in which students from all 23 IITs in the country took part. The 'Inter-IIT Cultural Meet 5.0' featured around 3,200 students and was held from January 9-11, 2023 on the campus.
The cultural meet, hosted by a different IIT every year, was not conducted for the past two years owing to the Covid-19 pandemic. Students from all IITs gathered to celebrate cultural arts with events conducted by different clubs.
The cultural meet featured various events in the following categories: Literary Arts, Speaking and Comedic Arts, Theatre Arts, Dance Arts, Musical Arts, Film-making Arts, Fine Arts, Digital Arts, and Lifestyle Arts. E-sports and culinary events were the new events introduced this year.

IISC, Axis Bank Ink Pact for Maths, Computing Centre

Axis Bank signed an agreement with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, to establish a Centre for Mathematics and Computing at the institute. The Axis Bank Centre for Mathematics and Computing is India's first comprehensive Academic Research Centre on Mathematics and Computing. It will play a vital role in building the nation's future as many contemporary and futuristic areas such as Artificial Intelligence and Data Science rely on the foundations of mathematics and computing.
the Centre will have state-of-the-art labs and programmes that will benefit faculty and students from more than twenty departments of IISc.
The Axis Bank Centre for Mathematics and Computing will provide a platform for exploring and advancing research and innovation in the above areas. The state-of-the-art facility will also serve as a training ground for the next generation of leaders in these fields, offering a range of educational and professional development opportunities for students and faculty.

India and the UK Sign, Exchange Letters to Formalise Young Professional Scheme in London

High Commissioner of India to the UK, Vikram K. Doraiswami and Matthew Rycroft, the permanent secretary at the Home Office of the UK signed and exchanged letters for formalising the Young Professional Scheme at an event in London.
The Young Professionals Scheme will allow graduates aged between 18-30 to get a two-year visa to study in each other's countries and help the youth understand the culture of one another.

Tripura Launches 'Saharsh' in All Govt., Govt-Aided Schools

In an effort to encourage social and emotional learning, the Tripura government introduced a special education programme titled 'Saharsh'.
The 'Saharsh' was launched in August 2022 in 40 schools of the state on a pilot basis. It was extended to all government and aided schools of the state now.
A similar programme, which was found to be effective in social and economic development in research studies of Harvard and Columbia Universities, is being contextualised with local realities of India before implementing in Tripura.

Union Minister Jitendra Singh Inaugurates National Genome Editing & Training Centre

Union Minister Jitendra Singh inaugurated "National Genome Editing & Training Centre" at National Agri-food Biotechnology Institute (NABI) Mohali, Punjab. The Minister also, at the same time, inaugurated a 4-day International Conference on Food and Nutritional Security 2023: – iFANS.
"National Genome Editing & Training Centre" (NGETC) is a one-roof state-of-the-art facility that will serve as a national platform to cater to the regional needs to adapt different genome editing methods, including CRISPR-Cas9 mediated genome modification. It will also empower young researchers by providing them with training and guidance about its know-how and application in crops. In the current climatic scenario, improving crops for better nutrition and tolerance to the changing environmental condition is a significant challenge. Genome editing could be a promising technology that Indian research could adapt to offer the desired tailor-made traits in crops.
The International Conference on Food and Nutritional Security (iFANS-2023) will be jointly organized by the National Agri-Food Biotechnology Institute (NABI), Centre for Innovative and Applied Bioprocessing (CIAB), National Institute of Plant Biotechnology (NIPB), and International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) at NABI, Mohali.
The 4-day conference brainstormed how genome editing could enhance the country's food and nutritional security under changing climate in the country. The conference had multiple sessions with as many speakers from 15 different countries. They shared their experience through their contribution to plant sciences in the frontier areas of their research.
