Prof. Bharat Bhasker Appointed is New IIMA Director

  • Professor Bharat Bhasker was appointed as the director of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIMA).
  • Professor Bhasker, who currently holds the position of Professor of Information Technology and Systems at IIM Lucknow, will take charge as IIMA director on March 1, 2023.
  • In the interim, the Board of Governors appointed Prof. Arindam Banerjee as the director-in-charge from February 1 to 28, 2023. The term of the incumbent director, Prof. Errol D'Souza, is ending on January 31.
  • Professor Bhasker had served as the Director of IIM Raipur from March 2017 to March 2022.

Banaras Hindu University Collaborates with Sri Sathya Sai University for Human Excellence

  • Banaras Hindu University and Sri Sathya Sai University for Human Excellence, Karnataka, collaborated for the promotion of studies and research in ancient Indian knowledge systems. The two varsities signed an MoU in this regard, paving way for a number of initiatives to further the dissemination of vast and deep ancient Indian wisdom.
  • As part of the understanding, SSSUHE is instituting Sri Sathya Sai Scholarship for the students of Banaras Hindu University studying Veda, Sanskrit, Vyakaran, Astrology and other branches of Hindu Studies, like ancient Hindu Art and Aesthetics, Culture, Philosophy, Polity or management systems.
  • Under the scheme, one hundred UG, PG or research students will be provided an annual scholarship of Rs. 25,000 on merit cum means basis. Such students will also get an opportunity to visit SSSUHE campus and Vedic learning centers. The visits shall be sponsored by Sri Sathya Sai University.

CM Bhagwant Mann Launches Schools of Eminence

  • Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann launched Schools of Eminence in Mohali and said that it is a revolutionary step for ensuring golden future of the students.
  • The Chief Minister said that these 117 schools of eminence being set up in 23 districts of state are temples of quality education. He said that the purpose of setting up these schools is to give wings to the dreams of the bright students of government schools.
  • These schools will enable the students to compete with their convent educated peers in various competitive exams across the country.
  • These schools will be named after great martyrs and national leaders, the chief minister announced.

Students Studying below Class 10 will Only Receive State Government Scholarship in Uttar Pradesh

  • The Uttar Pradesh state government decided that students studying below Class 10 will only receive the scholarship amount provided by the state government. The decision was taken as the scholarship amount given by the Centre, under the Prime Minister Young Achievers Scholarship Scheme (PM YASASVI Scheme 2023), did not reach Uttar Pradesh.
  • This year, the Centre started PM YASASVI Scheme 2023. However, the scholarship amount for the same has not been decided yet. Due to this, for this academic session, students will not receive the same. From the upcoming session, the state government will begin distributing it to the students.

A. Vellayan Re-appointed as Chairperson of IIM Kozhikode's Board of Governors

  • A. Vellayan was re-appointed as the chairperson of the Board of Governors (BoG) of Indian Institute of Management, Kozhikode for another four-year period. He was appointed under the IIM Act 2018. This will be his second tenure; he was first appointed as the chairperson in November 2018.
  • Under his leadership, IIM Kozhikode consolidated its position as the top 5 management institution in the country as per Ministry of Education's NIRF ranking.

Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) 2022 Report Released after 4 Years

  • The Annual Status of Education Report 2022 (ASER) revealed that almost all (98.4%) students in the age bracket of 6-14 years are now enrolled in schools. This national survey sheds light on learning outcomes in schools and is led by the Pratham Foundation. It was last conducted at this scale in 2018, so it marked the return of the survey after four years.
  • In ASER 2022, around 7 lakh candidates from 19,060 schools in 616 districts were surveyed to calculate the learning outcomes post pandemic on school children. The report revealed that there has been an improvement in enrolment levels of children in the age bracket of 6 to 14 years has gone from 96.6 per cent in 2010 to 96.7 per cent in 2014 and 97.2 per cent in 2018 to 98.4 per cent in 2022. An increase of 7.3 percentage points in government school enrolment in the period 2018 to 2022.
  • The report also showed a surge in students attending tuition classes. Between 2018 and 2022, in all states, there is an increase in the proportion of children who attend tuition classes. The exceptions are Gujarat, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Tripura.

IIT Kanpur Launches Professional Certificate Programme in Ethical Hacking and Penetration Testing

  • Simplilearn announced its partnership with IIT Kanpur for a professional certificate program in ethical hacking and penetration testing. This program enables learners to acquire the required skill set to analyze system security through vulnerability assessment, penetration testing, and ethical hacking. It will also enable them to master essential skills through hands-on training in real-world cases.

Mamata Banerjee Launches 'Medhashree Scholarship' for Minority Students in West Bengal

  • West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee criticised the BJP-led central government's move to discontinue scholarships for students of backward castes and minority communities.
  • She launched the 'Medhashree' scholarship, under which students belonging to the backward and minority communities will be entitled to an annual grant of Rs. 800, benefiting 2.63 lakh students every year.
