Pregnant Egyptian Mummy Revealed by Scientists

  • A team of Polish scientists have discovered the only known example of an embalmed pregnant Egyptian mummy.
  • The discovery was made by researchers at the Warsaw Mummy Project and revealed in the Journal of Archaeological Science on Thursday.
  • The project, started in 2015, uses technology to examine artefacts housed at the National Museum in Warsaw.
  • The mummy was previously thought to be a male priest but scans reveal it was a woman in the later stages of pregnancy.
  • Experts from the project believe the remains are most likely of a high-status woman, aged between 20 and 30, who died during the 1st Century BC.
  • "Presented here is the only known example of a mummified pregnant woman and the first radiological images of such a foetus," they said announcing the find.
  • Using the foetus head circumference, they estimate it was between 26 and 30 weeks when the mother died for unknown reasons.

Archaeologists Find 'Plain of Jars'

  • The archaeologists found that the jars in the "Plain of Jars" were used as burial sites. They have also found that though the jars could be 3,000 years old, the human remains suggest that people were buried alongside these jars 700 years ago, which is relatively recent.
  • According the scientists, the vessels in the Plain of Jars were placed in late Second millennium BCE. On the other hand, the human remains come from 13th century. It is possible that the jars were always used as burial sites.
  • Some also say that these jars were used for brewing celebratory rice wine and whiskey.
  • These conclusions were made only after four jar sites were studied. There are plenty of unexplored jar sites in Laos.
  • The Plain of Jars is located in Laos. It is a megalithic archaeological landscape. It consists of thousands of stone jars. These jars are found in the lower foothills of Xiangkhoang Plateau.
  • There are more than 90 Jar sites in the plateau. Each site has more than 400 stone jars. Some of the jars have stone lids as well.

Byzantine-Period Floor Mosaic Found in Israel

  • The multicolored mosaic pavement was unearthed during archaeological excavations directed by IAA archaeologist Dr. Avishag Reiss.
  • Dated to the Byzantine period (4th-5th century CE), it is decorated with colorful geometric motifs, and has a black rectangular frame.
  • "The pavement may have been part of a splendid residential building in a wealthy neighborhood adjacent to the industrial zone," IAA archaeologists said.
  • "At first, we did not realize that the floor is multicolored," they added.
  • "We assumed that it was simple white mosaic paving belonging to yet another industrial installation."
  • "But black patches dotted around the mosaic suggested that it was more than one color and prompted us to remove the whitish patina that had coated it for years."
  • "The conservation director went to work cleaning the mosaic with a special acid and, to our astonishment, a colorful mosaic carpet was revealed, ornamented with geometric motifs."
  • Once the mosaic had been documented, drawn, and photographed in the field, it was removed and temporarily transferred to the IAA's mosaic workshop at the Rockefeller Museum, where it has been treated and preserved by the conservation experts.

  • Oli inaugurated the new 22-storey, 84-metre white tower that was built two and a half centuries ago as per the orders of then Queen Lalit Tripura Sundari, by showering flowers from the top-floor balcony and declaring it open to the general public.
  • The tower had already been rebuilt once, after a 1934 earthquake and is part of a huge national reconstruction programme.
