Mysterious Carving of Naked Man Discovered Near Hadrian's Wall

  • An ancient carving depicting a naked "mystery horseman" discovered at Vindolanda, a Roman fort near Hadrian's Wall, might be a depiction of a god, archeologists said.
  • The carving shows a man without clothes (except a hat) who is holding a spear and standing in front of either a horse or donkey. This roughly 6-inch-wide by 12-inch-long (16 by 31.5 centimeters) stone would have fit into a recess at the fort, according to archaeologists at Vindolanda Charitable Trust in the United Kingdom.

Picasso Painting Found in Athens

  • A painting by Pablo Picasso that was stolen nine years ago during a heist at a Greek gallery has been recovered.
  • Police in Athens said that Picasso's Woman's Head had been found along with a 1905 painting of a windmill by Piet Mondrian.
  • Both were taken, along with a third artwork, during an elaborate 2012 heist at the Athens National Gallery.
  • The artworks were stripped from their frames in the early morning raid which only took minutes to carry out.
  • As per reports, a Greek man has been arrested after the art was found hidden at a gorge on the outskirts of the city.
  • The Picasso painting, a portrait of a woman in his signature cubist style, was gifted to the National Gallery by the artist himself back in 1949.

Art Becomes Form of Protest against Olympics

  • Miwako Sakauchi stands in her studio and brushes spinning swirls on torn cardboard and drawing paper, using the five colors designated as symbols of the modern Olympiad.
  • Titled 'Vortex', her paintings show the "anger, fear, sense of contradiction and state violence" over the residents evicted and the trees felled so enormous Olympic stadiums could be built.
  • One little-recognised outlet where people have expressed their frustration and fear over the Olympics has been art.
  • T-shirts, drawings and other artwork have become a form of protest over the decision to hold the Games against medical advice and the public's opposition. Officials have responded in some cases by demanding the sometimes satiric art and merchandise be removed, and the artists say their freedoms are being curtailed.

U.S. Repatriates 27 Stolen Antiquities to Cambodia

  • The United States has repatriated 27 antiquities to Cambodia, including Hindu and Buddhist statues, after years of work by New York investigators to recover the smuggled artefacts.
  • Valued at about $3.8 million, the items included several Hindu and Angkorian Buddhist statues, such as a bronze meditating Buddha on a Naga, a statue of Shiva, and a Buddhist sandstone sculpture of Prajnaparamita.
  • "The repatriation of these 27 stunning relics to the people of Cambodia restores an important link between the nation's classical Angkor era and its modern customs and beliefs that, for far too long, was disrupted by the greed of stolen antiquities traffickers.
