Sandesh Jhingan Named AIFF Men's Footballer of Year

  • Senior India defender, Sandesh Jhingan was named the AIFF men's Footballer of the Year 2020-21 season. It is the first time that the towering central defender has received the AIFF Player of the Year award, having won the Emerging Player of the Year Award in 2014.
  • Jhingan made his senior national team debut in 2015 in Guwahati and has since gone on to make 40 appearances for the Blue Tigers, scoring four goals.
  • He was part of the Indian sides that lifted the Intercontinental Cup in 2018 and played out a memorable draw at the home of the Asian champions Qatar in 2019.
  • Jhingan has captained the senior team on five occasions, the most recent being the international friendly against Oman in Dubai in March. He was conferred with the prestigious Arjuna Award last year.

Madhya Pradesh Para Shooter Rubina Francis Bags gold at Peru Event

  • Madhya Pradesh shooter, Rubina Francis has set a world record at the ongoing Para Sport Cup in Peru. She has won gold in the 10-metre air pistol para-event for women. Scoring 238.1 points, she went past the world record of Aysegul Pehlivanlar of Turkey. This win also secured her the quota for India at the Tokyo Summer Paralympics.
  • Over the years, she has earned more than 15 medals from national and international events. Presently, Rubina is training under the guidance of Jaspal Rana, former shooter and coach of the Junior Indian Pistol Shooting Team.

Aman Gulia and Sagar Jaglan India's New World Cadet Champions

  • Young wrestlers Aman Gulia and Sagar Jaglan emerged as the new world champions in their respective categories as India dished out an impressive show on the second day of the Cadet World Championship 2021 at Budapest, Hungary. Gulia emerged the winner with a convincing 5-2 win over American Luke Joseph Lilledahl in a 48 kg final while Jaglan blanked James Mockler Rowley 4-0 in the 80 kg summit clash.

UN, IOC Release Stamps to Commemorate Tokyo Olympics

  • The United Nations Postal Administration (UNPA) has in partnership with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) created a series of stamps to commemorate the Tokyo Olympic Games and to highlight sport's contribution to peace around the world.
  • The six stamp sheets feature the Olympic sports of sailing, baseball, judo, diving, equestrian and golf, the IOC informed.

Tokyo 2020: Guinea Withdraws on Eve of Games

  • The government of Guinea has decided not to send any of its athletes to the Tokyo Olympics over Covid-19 fears.
  • The Guinean delegation was due to include a total of five competitors - one each in athletics, judo and wrestling while two were set for the athletics programme
  • "Due to the rise in cases of Covid-19 variants the government out of concern for the health of the Guinean athletes, has regretfully decided to cancel their participation", wrote the Minister of Sport, Sanoussy Bantama Sow, in a short statement.
  • This is the first case of an entire team being withdrawn from the delayed Games in Tokyo.

Brisbane Picked to Host 2032 Olympics without a Rival Bid

  • Brisbane was picked to host the 2032 Olympics, the inevitable winner of a one-city race steered by the IOC to avoid rival bids.
  • The Games will go back to Australia 32 years after the popular 2000 Sydney Olympics. Melbourne hosted in 1956.
  • Brisbane follows 2028 host Los Angeles in getting 11 years to prepare for hosting the Games. Paris will host in 2024.

Faster, Higher, Stronger and Now 'Together', IOC Adds Fourth Olympic Motto

  • The Olympic motto was amended to "faster, higher, stronger - together" during the International Olympic Committee's session in Tokyo as the world waited for the pandemic-hit Games to begin on July 23.
  • The word "together" after a hyphen has been added to the earlier motto, which was made up of three Latin words -- Citius, Altius, Fortius, translating to "Faster Higher Stronger" in English.
  • The proposal to include the word together was made by IOC President Thomas Bach, which was endorsed by the body's Executive Board (EB) in April.
  • The motto now reads 'Citius, Altius, Fortius – Communis' in Latin.

Mongolia, Tajikistan and Switzerland New Members of ICC

  • The International Cricket Council (ICC) inducted Mongolia, Tajikistan and Switzerland as members at its 78th Annual General Meeting.
  • The meeting, which was conducted virtually, welcomed Mongolia and Tajikistan as the 22nd and 23rd members of the Asia region, while Switzerland is Europe's 35th member, with the ICC now comprising 106 members in total, including 94 associates.
  • The Mongolian Cricket Association (MCA) which was established in 2007 became the official national administrator of the sport in 2018.
  • Cricket was first played in Switzerland in 1817 and Cricket Switzerland (CS) was inaugurated as an association in 2014.

Viswanathan Anand Wins Sparkassen Trophy

  • In a battle between two former World champions fought over four games in a brand-new format of chess, Viswanathan Anand defeated Vladimir Kramnik to win the Sparkassen Trophy at Dortmund.
  • Kramnik, who conceived this variant of chess with the intention of making the game less predictable and more dynamic, however, was forced to draw the game by giving perpetual checks. Anand was just one move away from putting a second queen on the board.
