India Interested in Hosting 2036, 2040 Olympics

  • According to International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach, India is among a host of countries who are interested in hosting the Olympic Games in 2036, 2040 and even beyond.
  • The IOC recently announced that the city of Brisbane will host the 2032 Summer Games.
  • Those aspiring hosts include Indonesia, India, Germany and Qatar.

Odisha FC Signs Malaysian International Liridon Krasniqi

  • Indian Super League club Odisha FC reached an agreement with Malaysian side Johor Darul Ta'zim FC over a loan deal of midfielder Liridon Krasniqi.
  • Krasniqi will represent the Bhubaneswar-based side in the upcoming eighth edition of the ISL.
  • Krasniqi started his career in Europe and made his senior professional debut for FK Mlad Boleslav in Czech Republic in 2011 before signing for Turkish club Ankaraspor. He was loaned out to another club in Turkey - Fethiyespor.
  • Krasniqi moved to Malaysia in 2015 and played for Kedah Darul Aman Football Club. He also won the 2016 Malaysia Cup and 2017 Malaysia FA Cup titles for Kedah before signing for Melaka United in 2019.

Paralympics Return to Japan after 57 Years

  • In a manner most fitting, the Tokyo Paralympics began with the central theme of 'We Have Wings' in a colourful opening ceremony, depicting the para-athletes' endeavour to fly high in the face of unimaginable adversities.
  • At times tugging at the heartstrings, the otherwise joyous and colourful opening ceremony, the main character of which was a 'little one-winged plane', encapsulated the idea that every human being has its own wings, and by mustering courage and spreading them wide, it can go anywhere irrespective of which way the wind blows.
  • Emperor Naruhito declared the Games open in front of a near-empty stadium before the Paralympics flag was carried into the National Stadium.
  • The Paralympics have returned to Tokyo for the first time in 57 years, making the Japanese capital the first-ever city to host the Games twice.

Tokyo Paralympics 2020: Tek Chand Named India's Flag Bearer for Opening Ceremony

  • Javelin Thrower Tek Chand has been named as India's flag bearer for the opening ceremony of Tokyo Paralympics 2020 after Mariyappan Thangavelu was identified as a close contact of a Covid Positive person in his flight to Tokyo.
  • Mariyappan Thangavelu will now have to quarantine as precautionary measure and miss the opening ceremony. He though has tested negative upon reaching the Olympic village, the Organizing Committee has advised not to make Mariyaapan participate in the Opening Ceremony.

Afghanistan Cricket Board Gets New Chairman Post-Taliban Takeover

  • Azizullah Fazli has been renamed chairman of the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) in the first major development in the game's national governing body since the Taliban took control of the nation.
  • He will oversee ACB's leadership and course of action for the upcoming competitions.
  • Taliban members met ACB officials after which Fazli returned to the post he had vacated after Afghanistan came last in the 2019 World Cup in England.

Pune Stadium to be Named after Neeraj Chopra

  • A stadium in the premises of Army Sports Institute in Pune is to be named after Gold medalist Neeraj Chopra.
  • The stadium will be named as 'Neeraj Chopra Army Sports Stadium' in Pune Cantt.
  • The official naming ceremony of the stadium is scheduled for August 23 and will be carried out by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. Singh will be accompanied by the Army chief General M. M. Narvane and Lieutenant Governor J. S. Nain on this tour.

Amit Khatri Wins Silver in 10,000 m Race Walk

  • Amit Khatri won a silver in men's 10,000 m race walk event to clinch India's second medal at the World U-20 Athletics Championship.
  • Khatri the national record holder and world U-20 season leader, clocked 42 minute 17.94 seconds to finish second behind Kenya's Heristone Wanyoni (42:10.84).
  • Paul McGrath of Spain won the bronze with a timing of 42:26.11 minutes.

Mizoram Govt. Appoints Olympic-returned Lalremsiami as Hockey Chief Coach

  • Indian hockey player Lalremsiami, who was part of the women's team which finished fourth at the Tokyo Olympics, has been appointed as the chief coach, a Group-A post, under the Mizoram sports and youth services department.
  • The Mizoram government offered the Group-A post to Lalremsiami as an appreciation for her performance at the recently-concluded quadrennial event.
  • Lalremsiami, the first female Olympian from Mizoram, was made a chief coach in hockey discipline under the state sports and youth services department, a Group-A post similar to assistant director rank.
