Tokyo Paralympics: Avani Lekhara Becomes First Indian Woman to Win Two Medals

  • Avani Lekhara won the bronze medal in the women's 50 m rifle 3 positions SH1 event with a score of 445.9 to become the first Indian woman to win two medals at the Paralympics. Lekhara had also won gold in the 10m air rifle standing SH1 event.
  • India's medal tally now stands at 12 at these Paralympics. It has now won two golds, six silvers and four bronze medals. This is India's best tally at a single edition of the Para Games. It had won four medals at Rio 2016 and four at the 1984 Paralympics.

Tokyo Paralympics: Shooter Manish Narwal Wins Gold

  • India took its medal tally to 15 at the Tokyo Paralympics as Manish Narwal and Singhraj finished 1-2 in the mixed 50m Pistol SH1 shooting final. Manish won the gold with a new Paralympics Record of 218.2 and Singhraj won his 2nd medal at the Tokyo Paralympics, a Silver with 216.7.

Tokyo Paralympics: Archer Harvinder Singh Wins Bronze

  • Harvinder Singh notched up India's first ever archery medal in the Paralympics, holding his nerves to down Kim Min Su of Korea in a thrilling shoot-off for the men's individual recurve bronze in the ongoing Games.
  • World No.23 Singh was the first athlete from India to win a gold medal at a major para competition in the 2018 Asian Games. An economics scholar from the Punjabi University, Patiala, Singh collected three shoot-off wins on the day starting with his triumphs in the opening rounds.

Tokyo 2020: China's Armless Swimmer Zheng Tao Dominates with Four Golds

  • Chinese para-swimmer Zheng Tao has won the internet after shattering records and winning four gold medals at the Tokyo Games - despite having no arms.
  • Zheng, who lost his arms to an electric shock as a child, dominated with wins in freestyle, backstroke and butterfly.
  • All of his individual victories have been world or Paralympic records.
  • His 50 m freestyle final, a Games record, was particularly celebrated on Chinese social media as it also marked the country's 500th summer Paralympic gold since the country first competed at the 1984 Games in New York City.
  • He took up the sport at the age of 13, and made his international swimming debut six years later at the World Championships in the Netherlands.
  • He then went on to win his first Paralympic gold at London 2012 in the 100m backstroke event.

Tokyo Paralympics: Praveen Kumar Clinches Silver in Men's T64 High Jump

  • India's Praveen Kumar clinched the silver medal in the men's high jump T64 event of the Paralympics, taking the country's haul to 11 in the ongoing Games in Tokyo. Kumar competing in his debut Paralympics, set a new Asian record with a 2.07 m jump to finish behind Great Britain's Jonathan Broom-Edwards, who notched up his season's best of 2.10 m for the gold.
  • The bronze went to Rio Games champion Maciej Lepiato of Poland who produced an effort of 2.04 m. T64 classification is for athletes with a leg amputation, who compete with prosthetics in a standing position.

Paralympian is Stripped of Gold Medal

  • The International Paralympics Committee (IPC) has defended a decision to strip a Malaysian athlete of his gold medal.
  • Shot putter Muhammad Ziyad Zolkefli won gold in the F20 class, but was later disqualified for arriving three minutes late for the event.
  • Zolkefli was allowed to compete because at the time he had a logical reason for being late, the IPC said.
  • However, a referee later found there was no justifiable reason for him to be late.
  • The decision to strip Zolkefli of his medal was met with much anger on social media, especially from Malaysians.

Ronaldo Breaks World Record for Scoring most Goals in Men's International Football

  • Cristiano Ronaldo missed a penalty but still broke the men's international scoring record before adding a second goal as Portugal beat Ireland 2-1 in World Cup qualifying.
  • Ronaldo grabbed his 110th goal in the 89th minute to move ahead of former Iran striker Ali Daei.
  • Six minutes into stoppage time, Ronaldo made it 111 in 180 games to break Irish hearts after defender John Egan gave his nation the lead in the 45th.

Paralympics: Thangavelu Mariyappan, Sharad Kumar Win Silver and Bronze

  • Defending champion Mariyappan Thangavelu and Sharad Kumar won silver and bronze, respectively in the men's high jump T42 event as India's medal tally at the Paralympics touched an unprecedented 10.
  • Mariyappan cleared 1.86 m while the American gold winner Sam Grewe succeeded in soaring above 1.88 m in his third attempt.
  • Kumar took the bronze with an effort of 1.83 m.
  • The T42 classification is for athletes with a leg deficiency, leg length difference, impaired muscle power or impaired passive range of movement in the legs. The athletes compete in a standing position.

Dale Steyn Retirest from All Forms of Cricket

  • South African pacer Dale Steyn has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket. Since making his international debut in 2004, he played 93 Tests, 125 ODIs and 47 T20Is.
  • The veteran pacer is fondly known as 'Steyn Gun' among fans for his express pace.
  • Steyn last appeared in a Test match in February 2019 and announced retirement from the format in August that year. His last ODI was in March 2019 while his last ODI was in February 2020. Steyn played for Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL 2020 but managed only three matches for average returns. He played the Pakistan Super League in 2021, his last professional commitment as a player.
