India Inks 1st Defence Pact with Caribbean Nation

  • India, for the first time, included a Caribbean nation, the Dominican Republic, into the ITEC-Defence Scheme, under which the armed forces personnel of that country will get trained at various military training institutes in the country.
  • The pact was among the several signed during External Affairs Minister Jaishankar's visit. The two sides also agreed to deepen cooperation in cutting-edge sectors such as space exploration, satellite data management, artificial intelligence, biotechnologies, information and communication technologies and more.

Minister Narayan Rane Launches the Revamped CGTMSE Scheme

  • Union Minister for MSME Narayan Rane launched the revamped CGTMSE Scheme in Mumbai. CGTMSE has been provided with an additional corpus support of Rs. 9,000 crore in the Union Budget for FY 2023-24 to revamp its Scheme to provide guarantee for additional Rs. 2 lakh crore to Micro & Small Enterprises. Accordingly, the major revamp measures were launched and disseminated to the lending institutions. The modifications included reduction in guarantee fees for loans up to Rs. 1 crore by 50% bringing the minimum guarantee fee to the level of 0.37% pa only. Another major change announced was raising of ceiling for guarantee from Rs. 2 crore to Rs. 5 crore and enhancing the threshold limit for claim settlement without initiation of legal action to Rs. 10 lakh.

Union Cabinet approves National Medical Devices Policy

  • According to a release issued by the government, the policy is expected to provide the required support and directions to strengthen the medical devices industry into a competitive, self-reliant, resilient and innovative industry that caters to the healthcare needs of not only India but also the world. 
  • The Union Cabinet approved the National Medical Devices Policy, 2023, which is expected to facilitate an orderly growth of the medical device sector to meet the public health objectives of access, affordability, quality, and innovation.
  • It will help the sector grow from the present $11 billion to $50 billion in the next five years."The National Medical Devices Policy, 2023 aims to place the medical devices sector on an accelerated path of growth with a patient-centric approach to meet the evolving healthcare needs of patients,'' the government said in the release.

  •  Union Minister for Labour and Employment Bhupender Yadav launched new features in eShram Portal in the presence of Arti Ahuja, Secretary, Ministry of Labour and Employment and other senior officers of the ministry.
  • The new features added in eShram portal will enhance its utility and facilitate ease of registration for unorganised workers. The eShram-registered workers can now connect with employment opportunities, skilling, apprenticeship, pension scheme, digital skilling and states' schemes through the portal.
  • As on March 16, 2023, as many as 28.64 crore unorganised workers registered on eShram portal
  • The minister of State for Labour and Employment Rameswar Teli on March 16 in a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha informed that as on March 10, 2023, a total of 28.64 crore unorganised workers have been registered on eShram portal.

Atal Innovation Mission, NITI Aayog, UNCDF Team up to Make India Global Agri-tech Leader

  • Atal Innovation Mission (AIM), NITI Aayog, and the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) jointly launched a whitepaper aimed at making India a global leader in agri-tech innovation and expanding these innovations to the least developed countries in Asia and Africa.
  • The whitepaper outlines the significant observations and recommendations required to tackle challenges in the agriculture sector and promote sustainable practices that support smallholder farmers across developing economies. According to the statement, agri-tech innovations will help address food security, supply chain inefficiencies, and climate change concerns.
