Karnataka Tops in Fasal Bima, over Rs. 687 crore Claims Settled

  • Karnataka was declared topper in the implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) scheme, during a national conference in Chhattisgarh. The award was handed over to the state government. Agriculture department officials said that Rs. 687.4 crore of 5.66 lakh farmers were settled, pending since 2018.

Centre to Introduce Cinematograph Bill

  • Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur said that the Centre will introduce the Cinematograph Bill 2023 during the Monsoon session of Parliament. The minister said the bill is aimed at curbing film piracy.
  • In 2019, the Union Cabinet had gaven its approval to a proposal by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to make amendments to the Cinematograph Act, 1952, and introduce the Cinematograph (Amendment) Bill, 2019.
  • The bill was brought to impose strict penalties for film piracy and curb the release of pirated versions which causes huge losses to the movie industry and the exchequer.
  • The government proposed to make film piracy a punishable offence that could attract imprisonment of up to three years and a fine of up to Rs. 10 lakh, or both

Union Minister Arjun Munda Launches Scheme to Promote Tribal Products from Northeast

  • Union Minister for Tribal Affairs Minister Arjun Munda launched a scheme to promote tribal products from the north-eastern region of the country.
  • The scheme, 'Marketing and Logistics Development for Promotion of Tribal Products from North-Eastern Region (PTP-NER)', aims to enhance livelihood opportunities for tribal artisans in the region.
  • The PTP-NER scheme will focus on increasing efficiency in procurement, logistics and marketing of tribal products from the northeastern states of India.
  • It aims to provide backward and forward linkages through incubation support, aggregation, skill and entrepreneurship development, sourcing and procurement, marketing, transportation and publicity to tribal artisans in the region.
  • As part of the scheme, 68 Tribal Artisan Melas (TAMs) will be organised from April to May in the northeast to empanel tribal artisans from the region.
  • These TAMs will provide tribal artisans a platform to showcase their products and enhance their income.

  •  IndiaNational Highway Authority of India has signed an MoU with the Nagarjunasagar-Srisailam Tiger Reserve, spread across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana to facilitate seamless and efficient entry process for vehicles entering into the forest area.
  • Road Transport and Highways Ministry said, the initiative aims to provide FASTag based payment system at Forest entry points. It will extend the benefit of collection of Ecosystem Management Coordination fee through FASTag at various entrance points of the Tiger Reserve.
  • The Ministry said, with this, visitors can avoid long queues and delays. This partnership between Indian Highways Management Company Limited and the Forest Department is a significant step towards promoting sustainable tourism and preserving natural resources by curbing vehicular emissions at the forest entry points.

PM Modi launches railway projects, methanol plant in Assam

The newly rolled-out railway projects include the Digaru-Lumding and Gauripur-Abhayapuri sections, as well as the doubling of tracks between New Bongaigaon and Dhup Dhara.
  •  During his day-long tour to Guwahati, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled several railway projects across the Northeast region, while also inaugurating a methanol plant and laying the foundation stone for a bridge over the Brahmaputra river. Modi conducted the virtual inauguration of five railway works, along with other projects, from the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium.
  • Furthermore, Modi launched the electrification of the Raninagar-Jalpaiguri-Guwahati, Senchoa-Silghat, and Senchoa-Mairabari sections. The total cost of these projects is estimated to be Rs 7,300 crore.
  • In addition to the railway projects, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the Palasbari-Sualkuchi bridge over the Brahmaputra River. The construction of the bridge, which will cost an estimated Rs 3,200 crore, is expected to take 3-4 years. The state government has already obtained the necessary environmental and other clearances to begin construction work.

Atal Tinkering Labs Linked with Krishi Vigyan Kendra & Agricultural Technology Management Agency

 Atal Innovation Mission (AIM), NITI Aayog, and the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare (MoA&FW) have come together to promote innovation in the agricultural sector among school students across India. The two government bodies have agreed to connect Atal Tinkering Labs (ATLs) with Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVKs) and Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMAs) under the initiative. The collaboration is a result of the vision of the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi who seeded this idea during a conversation and proposed to connect the ATLs with the KVKs across the country. The Prime Minister also suggested both the government bodies to look into the idea of linking soil testing labs to ATL schools.
KVKs function as a "Single Window Agricultural Knowledge Resource and Capacity Development Centre," and this collaboration will provide numerous stakeholders with necessary information, training, and inputs. KVKs, in partnership with ATMA, will collaborate with nearby ATLs to support agricultural-related innovation.
During the first phase of the implementation, one KVK under each of the 11 Agricultural Technology Application Research Institutes (ATARIs) will be involved, providing technology backstopping and facilitating knowledge-sharing and skill-building exercises. KVK experts will also undertake need-based visits to nearby ATLs, while KVKs will provide literature, seeds, planting materials, and other inputs as required. The pilot project will be extended after assessing the positive outcomes after two years.

Chhattisgarh Launches Scheme for Tribals

  • Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was in Chhattisgarh during which she attended the launching of a state government scheme for tribals in Jagdalpur city in Bastar district.
  • Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel was the chief guest at the event "Bharose Ka Sammelan" where 'Mukhyamantri Adivasi Parab Samman Nidhi Yojana' was launched.
  • Under this scheme, the state government will provide annual financial assistance of Rs. 10,000 (in two instalments) to Gram Panchayats in the scheduled areas for organising tribal festivals, fairs, and religious programs.
  • At the event, the Chief Minister disbursed the first instalment of Rs. 5,000 each for 1,840-gram panchayats in the Bastar division, comprising seven districts.
  • The scheme is aimed at preserving tribal culture and traditions.
