Special Scholarships to South Asian Students by University of Dundee

  • The University of Dundee is offering South Asia Scholarships worth 5000 GBP/year for undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) students commencing September 2021 and January 2022. The scholarship is to support students from South Asia during these challenging times, which includes students from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. 
  • The eligibility criteria for the undergraduate programme is that the student must be studying a full-time undergraduate programme excluding programmes in the School of Medicine or the School of Dentistry, should be domiciled in South Asia and have international fee status.
  • For postgraduate programme scholarship, the student must be studying a full time, 180 credit PG programme over the course of 1 year. If you are studying a 2-year full-time programme, you may be eligible for the awards in both years. The applicant must be domiciled in South Asia and have an international fee status.

Periyar University Launches Online Learning Portal for UG, PG Courses

  • Periyar University, Salem, has announced to launch an online learning portal http://www.periyaedu.in. It will offer undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes in multiple domains with a live learning process. The University announced this as an initiative to expand its offerings in line with the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP2020).
  • Through the live learning portal periyaredu.in, the varsity will offer MBA, MSc in Mathematics, MA with specializations in English and History, and Masters in Commerce. It will also offer Bachelors of Commerce and Bachelor of Arts in English to aspirants looking to get into business management and literature as a domain, respectively.
  • With the launch of the online portal, Periyar University aims to improve the Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) in Higher Education which currently stands at 27.4%.

Telangana Promotes All School Students from Classes 1 to 9

  • Telangana issued an order promoting all students from Classes 1 to 9 studying in government, aided and private unaided schools to the next higher class for the academic year 2021-22.
  • Education Minister P Sabitha Indra Reddy said that the state has decided not to detain anyone from classes 1 to 9 in the state.
  • The order issued by the government said, "The government, after careful examination of the matter and keeping in view of the hardship caused due to the Covid-19 pandemic, hereby accord permission to the Director of School Education (FAC), Telangana, Hyderabad, to promote all students of classes 1 to 9 studying in government, aided, and private unaided schools during the academic year 2020-21 to next higher classes in the academic year 2021-22."

Microsoft to Train 1.62L Students in Andhra Pradesh

  • Microsoft is collaborating with Government of Andhra Pradesh in imparting digital skills to 1.62 lakh students and unemployed youth across 300 plus colleges and skill development centres in the state.
  • Announcing this, IT minister Mekapati Goutham Reddy pointed out that for the purpose, AP government has entered into an MoU with IT giant Microsoft to skill up students and youth, so that they become employable by various companies due to their additional qualifications.
  • He underlined that Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy wants every house to be "digitally connected". About 80 lakh houses will be provided with digital connection in three years.
  • The minister said the focus will be on "remote learning", a major challenge during the Covid times. He disclosed that efforts are being made to provide computers and laptops to 1.30 crore people in the state.

CSIR Survey

  • Smokers and vegetarians were found to have lower sero-positivity, while those with blood group 'O' may be less susceptible to coronavirus, according to a survey by an top research body.
  • The pan-India serosurvey, conducted by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), studied the presence of antibodies against SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes the coronavirus disease (Covid-19), and their neutralisation capability to infer possible risk factors for infection.
  • The study, done by a team of 140 doctors and scientists, accessed 10,427 adult individuals working in more than 40 CSIR laboratories and centres in urban and semi-urban settings, and their family members. These people voluntarily participated in the study.

Biocon Biologics, Viatris get European Commission nod for Cancer Drug

  • Biocon Biologics Ltd., a subsidiary of Bengaluru-headquartered Biocon Ltd., has announced that Abevmy 100 & 400 mg, a biosimilar of Bevacizumab co-developed with Viatris Inc., has received marketing authorisation approval from the European Commission.
  • The nod came following the positive recommendation by the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use of the European Medicines Agency, it said.
  • Abevmy 100 & 400 mg is approved for the treatment inmetastatic colorectal carcinoma, metastatic breast cancer, non-small-cell lung carcinoma, glioblastoma, ovarian, cervical and renal cancer as part of a specific regimen, the company said.
  • The centralised marketing authorisation granted by the EC is valid in all EU Member States as well as in the European Economic Area countries Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, it was stated.

Guinness World Record Participation Certificate for Learning Coding

  • The 'AI-for-India' Initiative launched by IIT Madras-incubated startup GUVI and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to upskill Indians in coding has already attracted over 2.80 lakh participants interested in learning Python and Artificial Intelligence.
  • A one-day online coding event is being conducted by GUVI in association with AICTE, IIT Madras Research Park, with more partners, now roped in.
  • GUVI welcomes all aspiring Indians to utilize this online opportunity to acquire AI skills and boost the participation to 10 lakh people, which will drive it towards a Guinness World Record for the maximum number of participants in an online event.
  • In addition, Participation Certification will be awarded for the learners who take part in this Guinness World record initiative. Also, unlimited access to a Coding skill-building platform called 'CodeKata', will be offered to all those who registered to 'AI-for-India'.

  • The MBA-PGPX programme is designed to enable high performing professionals to accelerate their growth to leadership positions, as well as entrepreneurs to scale up and expand their business ventures.
  • Launched in 2006, more than 1,500 students have graduated from the MBA-PGPX till date.   • IIT Madras has partnered with ACC Ltd and Ambuja Cements Ltd, the main operating companies of the cement major LafargeHolcim in India, to develop green and sustainable building solutions.
  • The rising global demand for building materials substantiates the need for sustainable solutions. This academic collaboration is born out of the Company's vision to re-invent how the world is built to make it greener, smarter and sustainable for all.
  • The collaborative research study will be financially aided by LafargeHolcim Innovation Centre (LHIC) focusing on 'Binder Optimization for Alternate Reinforcements'.
  • This research will delve into the optimized use of low CO2 binders with a combination of alternative reinforcement, as a potential substitute for conventional steel rebar, thereby significantly reducing the CO2 footprints of construction.
