Congo Declares the End of the 12th Ebola Outbreak

  • The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) officially declared the end of the 12th Ebola outbreak, which killed six people in its eastern province of North Kivu.
  • Since the outbreak declared in February 2021, a total of 12 cases were reported, including six deaths in the province.
  • According to the aid group Medecins Sans Frontieres, the outbreak was contained using Merck's Ebola vaccine, which was given to more than 1,600 of the patients' contacts and contacts of contacts.
  • The cases were genetically linked to the 2018-20 Ebola epidemic that killed more than 2,200 people, the second-highest toll recorded in the disease's history.

Punjab CM Sets Up VCs Committee to Work Out Exam Reforms

  • Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh constituted a committee of vice chancellors to work out examination reforms and review curriculums. The committee, under the chairmanship of VC GNDU, will also look into introduction of new courses and digital education and will submit its report within 60 days.
  • Underlining the need to keep up with the transformation taking place globally in education, the Chief Minister tasked the committee with drafting a plan to bring the state's education system at par with the world. New and relevant courses should be identified to ensure that the students are in tune with the changes taking place in global education.
  • The Chief Minister also directed that all new colleges in the state must start classes from academic session 2021-22.

Education Ministry Asks IITs, NITs, IIITs to Defer Offline Exams

  • The Education Ministry wrote to all centrally-funded educational institutions (CFTIs) asking them to postpone their offline examinations scheduled this month. The ministry cited the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic behind the request. Online tests, however, can continue.
  • Higher Education Secretary Amit Khare in his letter said that the decision on examinations will be reviewed again in the first week of June. "The institutions have been further advised to ensure that if anyone in the institution needs any assistance it should be provided immediate possible help so that he/she comes out of the distress at the earliest. All Institutions have to encourage eligible persons to go for vaccination and ensure that everyone follows Covid-19 appropriate behaviour to remain safe," Khare wrote in his letter.
  • The centrally funded institutes include the Central Universities, Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs).

Calicut University Begins Online Application Process for UG, PG Entrance Exams

  • The Calicut University, Kerala, will be admitting undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) admissions 2021 on the basis of entrance test and other criteria. The university has issued individual prospectuses for CU (UG and PG) admission 2021 at the official website i.e. cuonline.ac.in.
  • The eligible and interested candidates can apply online for admission as per the schedule indicated in the prospectus. The last date to apply for admissions is May 10, 2021.
  • The Calicut University admission forms 2021 have already been released online at the official website. The list of various courses offered by the university is mentioned on the official website. Candidates may note that admission to most UG programmes such as BHM and BCom (Hons) will be done on the basis of marks secured in the entrance test. Similarly, for PG programs such as MA, MSc and MCom, admission will be done on the basis of marks secured in the entrance test.

Japanese Govt's MEXT Scholarships Application Process

  • Online applications have been invited by the Japanese Ministry of Education for scholarships for Indian students to pursue undergraduate, graduate courses and research at Japanese universities under the MEXT scholarship program 2022. Candidates can apply for the scholarship till May 28.
  • The MEXT scholarship will be offered to study a total of 20 subjects such as Mathematical Science, Physics, Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Geology and Geo-informatics among others.

University of East Anglia Announces Scholarships for Indian Students at UG Level

  • The University of East Anglia (UEA), United Kingdom has announced a scholarship worth £4000 for undergraduate students across programmes who will be joining UEA in September 2021. For those looking to pursue undergraduate programmes, the varsity is also offering scholarships to students joining in September.
  • The International Country Award is an automatic award in which the eligible candidates will receive £4,000 off on their first-year tuition fees once selected.

IIT-Bombay Pilots Innovative Technology to Generate Oxygen

  • In the wake of medical oxygen shortage to treat COVID-19 patients, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Bombay is piloting a new technology to convert a nitrogen unit into an oxygen generating unit.
  • The institute, in a statement said that the process relied on a simple technological intervention of converting a pressure swing adsorption (PSA) nitrogen unit into a PSA oxygen unit.

IIM Udaipur Confers 317 Students with MBA Degrees

  • The Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Udaipur, hosted its 9th Annual Convocation for the two-year MBA (Batch 2019-21), and the one-year MBA in Global Supply Chain Management and Digital Enterprise Management (Batches 2020-21) in virtual mode.
  • A total of 317 students graduated in the convocation of two-year MBA (batch 2019-21) and one-year MBA GSCM and DEM, (batches 2020-21).

Bangalore University to Commence Online Classes for UG, PG Courses

  • In view of the surging spike in Covid-19 cases across the country, Bangalore University notified to conduct online classes for all the final semesters- Sem IV of PG courses of faculties of Arts, Science, Commerce, Management, Education and Physical Education for the academic year 2020-21 from May 5, 2021.
  • The classes for UG courses will also commence in online mode for all the even semesters (IInd, IVth, VIth, and VIIIth semester) for the academic year 2020-21 from April 28 onwards.

Army Project to Help Ladakh Students Prepare for Competitive Exams

  • As part of the Indian Army's initiative to secure a better future for Ladakhi youth, the army's Leh-based Corps signed an MoU with Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) and National Integrity and Educational Development Organisation, (NIEDO) to help students to prepare for competitive examinations.
  • The project, Ladakh Ignited Minds: A Centre of Excellence and Wellness, is a full-time residential programme to mentor and guide students for a period of twelve months for entrance examinations of various medical and engineering colleges spread across the country.
  • The programme being run under the aegis of the Indian Army will be executed by Kanpur-based NIEDO. The Army will oversee the overall operations that include administration and logistics with requisite funding support from HPCL.
  • NIEDO will not only mentor and guide the students but will also provide value-based education, soft skill training, critical life competencies, develop leadership capabilities and personality development.
