Hafiz Saeed Indicted on Terror-Funding Charges

A Pakistani anti-terrorism court indicted Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) founder Hafiz Saeed, the mastermind of the 2008 Mumbai attacks, and three Jamaat-ud-Dawah (JuD) leaders on terror-financing charges.
The court ordered the government's prosecution team to summon witnesses to pursue the case.
The other three are Zafar Iqbal, Abdul Salam bin Muhammad and Muhammad Ashraf. The three are officials of the JuD, declared a front of the LeT by the United Nations and the US.

Greta Thunberg Time Person of the Year for 2019

Greta Thunberg was named Time magazine's Person of the Year for 2019.
Greta is the youngest person to be chosen by the magazine in a tradition that started in 1927.
Speaking at a UN climate change summit in Madrid before the announcement, she urged world leaders to stop using "creative PR" to avoid real action.
Last year, the teenager started an environmental strike by missing lessons most Fridays to protest outside the Swedish parliament building. It sparked a worldwide movement that became popular with the hashtag #FridaysForFuture.

Roxette Singer Dies

The lead singer of Swedish pop duo sensation Roxette, Marie Fredriksson, who shot to global fame in the 1990s with hits like It Must Have Been Love, died aged 61 after a long fight with cancer.
Marie was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2002 but went into remission and made a musical comeback a few years later.
By 2016, however, the illness had taken its toll and doctors advised her to stop touring.

Nobel Prize Winner Arnold on Board of Alphabet Inc.

Alphabet Inc. named France's Arnold, a Nobel-prize winning chemist, to its board, bringing the internet giant's total number of female directors to three.
Arnold, a professor at California Institute of Technology, won the 2018 Nobel Prize in chemistry for her work developing the first proteins that can catalyze chemical reactions -- making it more environmentally friendly to develop new drugs and produce renewable energy.
Earlier in 2019, Robin Washington, outgoing chief financial officer of Gilead Sciences Inc., joined the Alphabet board as longtime chairman Eric Schmidt and former Google Cloud chief Diane Greene announced plans to step down. Ann Mather, the former CFO of Pixar, joined the board in 2005.

Sri Lanka Appoints Suresh Sallay as Spy Chief

Sri Lanka for the first time named a military officer to head the country's main intelligence agency. The head of the State Intelligence Service (SIS) was replaced by brigadier Suresh Sallay, a former head of military intelligence. The appointment of Suresh Sallay comes after Gotabaya Rajapaksa was elected President.

Maoist Leader Ramanna Dies

As per reports, Maoist leader Ravula Srinivas, alias Ramanna, who carried a reward of Rs. 40 lakh on his head, died in Bastar forests of Chhattisgarh.
Ramanna was a member of the all-powerful the Central Committee of the CPI (Maoist).

Sanna Marin to Become Youngest PM

Sanna Marin, aged 34, will become the world's youngest Prime Minister as head of a women-led coalition government in Finland.
The Transportation Minister was picked by her Social Democratic party to take charge after PM Antti Rinne quit. She is expected to be sworn in.
She will lead a centre-left coalition of five parties all headed by women.
Mr. Rinne stepped down after losing the confidence of a coalition member over his handling of a postal strike.
When she takes office, Ms. Marin will be the world's youngest sitting Prime Minister. New Zealand PM Jacinda Ardern is 39, while Ukrainian Premier Oleksiy Honcharuk is 35.

K. Vijay Kumar Appointed Senior Security Advisor in MHA

Former advisor to the Governor of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, K. Vijay Kumar has been appointed as a senior security advisor in the Union Home Ministry headed by Amit Shah.
The 1975-batch officer of the Indian Police Service (IPS) will advise the ministry on security related matters of Union Territory of JK and Left Wing Extremism (LWE) affected States.
Kumar served as the Director General of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Director of the National Police Academy in Hyderabad and his most talked about stint was as the chief of the Tamil Nadu police special task force that killed forest brigand Veerappan in 2004.

Jairam Sridharan Resigns as CFO

Axis Bank's Jairam Sridharan resigned from the post of Chief Financial Officer of Axis Bank to pursue other career opportunities.
Jairam Sridharan will continue to serve as the Group Executive & Chief Financial Officer of the Bank under his notice period of three months.

TT Coach Bhawani Mukherji Passes Away

Former India table tennis head coach Bhawani Mukherji died aged 68.
Mukherji, who was the first Dronacharya awardee in table tennis, did his schooling and graduation from Ajmer where his father was a medical practitioner.
He joined the National Institute of Sports (NIS) Patiala in the mid-seventies after obtaining diploma in coaching.
He was the head coach at NIS Patiala and became the head coach of the national team for a brief period after the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

Girish Chandra Chaturvedi New Chairman of NSE

The National Stock Exchange of India Ltd, or NSE, received SEBI's approval to appoint Girish Chandra Chaturvedi, a retired IAS officer and former secretary, Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, as its chairman.
The chairman's post had fallen vacant after Ashok Chawla stepped down on January 11, 2019 amid allegations of his involvement in the Aircel-Maxis case.
He is currently on the board of ICICI Bank and a member of the government-appointed board of Infrastructure Leasing and Financial Services Ltd (IL&FS).
