IIT Madras Launches techMBA Programme

  •  Indian Institute of Technology Madras is launching a first-of-its-kind programme, techMBA, for its undergraduate (UG) students from all the engineering streams.
  • The students taking techMBA programme will be awarded two degrees, Engineering UG degree (B.Tech.) and Master's degree in Management (MBA).
  • The programme would be a part of the Five-Year Inter-Disciplinary Dual Degree (IDDD) programmes and is conceptualised by the Department of Management Studies (DOMS), IIT Madras.
  • The Institute is introducing the programme from the Academic Year 2019-20 and it would have an intake of 25-30 students.
  • Department of Management Studies would offer the foundational techMBA courses during the third and fourth years of all UG programs.
  • The eligibility criteria for opting for the courses in the fifth year are CGPA, departmental aptitude test and/or personal interview.

AIDS Deaths Down

  •  The United Nations said that the number of deaths due to HIV decreased to 770,000 in 2018, which is about 33% less than the year 2010.
  • However, the United Nations warned that global efforts to eradicate this disease are being blocked because financing is going down.
  • UNAIDS said in its annual report that according to an estimate, about 3.79 million people are currently infected with HIV. Of these, 2.33 million people have access to 'anti retroviral therapy'.
  • In the mid-1990s, AIDS took the form of a severe epidemic. Since then, keeping in view the progress made in prevention of this disease, it has been reported in the report that in the year 2017, 8,00,000 people were killed by this disease, which decreased to 770,000 in 2018.

TN to Host 1st Global School Debate tournament

  •  An international debating tournament for school children would be held in Chennai from July 18 to July 21, 2019.
  • As many as 15 teams from various countries would participate in the first-ever international event, called "Mini Worlds", which is being organised by the Indian Schools Debating Society (ISDS). The tournament would be held in the format followed by World Schools Debating Championships.
  • According to an ISDS communiqué, the event would be represented by teams from The Netherlands, England, Wales, Ireland, Mexico, Nigeria, Australia and New Zealand, Sri Lanka, South Korea and Hong Kong. Three teams will represent India.

NCC Compulsory in Schools

  • Punjab would provide compulsory National Cadet Corps (NCC) training to students at all government schools and colleges in areas located close to the international border with Pakistan.
  • Chief Minister Amarinder Singh took a decision in this regard at a high-level meeting, saying that it would help make the youth employable in the armed and paramilitary forces besides inculcating a strong sense of disciplinein in them.
  • Gradually, NCC training would be made compulsory at all the schools in the state.
  • Amarinder Singh announced a pilot project to provide compulsory NCC training to all students of Class IX and XI at government schools and first and second year students at all colleges in the border districts of Gurdaspur, Tarn Taran and Amritsar.
  • There are 365 high schools and 365 senior secondary schools in these districts.

Panel to Review Contents of WB Text Books

  • Amid a controversy over history text book in state-run schools describing a section of the freedom fighters as "extremists", the West Bengal government Tuesday announced formation of a committee to review the contents of such books.
  • Headed by educationist Jiban Mukhopadhyay, the "textbook review committee" comprises headmasters and senior school teachers.
  • The panel was asked to submit its report to the education department within three months.

Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan

  • Following a directive by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, the Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan, one of the three central institutes in the country promoting Sanskrit, adopted five villages across the country to ensure people are able to converse in the language.
  • The Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan (RKS), Lal Bahadur Shastri Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha in Delhi and the Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha in Tirupati are the three central institutes promoting the more than 3,500-year-old language.
  • The HRD Ministry directed the three institutes to adopt two villages and teach the language in a bid to boost Sanskrit as a spoken language.

UGC Launches STRIDE Scheme

  • University Grants Commission launched STRIDE scheme aimed at strengthening research culture and innovation in universities and colleges of the country.
  • Scheme for Trans-disciplinary Research for India's Developing Economy (STRIDE), aims to identify young talent, strengthen research culture, build capacity, promote innovation and support trans-disciplinary research for India's developing economy and national development.
  • The scheme also seeks to fund high impact research projects in Humanities and Social Sciences.
  • The scheme has three components:
  1. The first is to identify young talent and providing research capacity building in diverse disciplines by mentoring, nurturing and supporting young talents to innovate solutions for local, regional, national and global problems. This component is open to all disciplines for a grant up to Rs. 1 crore.
  2. The second component of the scheme is to enhance problem-solving skills with the help of social innovation and action research to improve well being of people and contribute to India's developing economy. Collaborations between universities, government, voluntary organisations, and industries are encouraged under this scheme. This component is also open to all disciplines for grant up to 50 lakh -1 crore.
  3. The final component involves funding high impact research projects in the field of identified thrust areas in humanities and human sciences through a national network of eminent scientists from leading institutions. This component is only open to specific disciplines with a possible grant of up to Rs. 2 lakhs to developing a proposal.
