NMC To Be Set Up In Six Months: Govt

  •  India will get the National Medical Commission (NMC), that will replace the graft-tainted Medical Council of India (MCI), in the next six months according to Union health minister Harsh Vardhan.
  • The National Exit Test (NEXT), which will work as the common final-year exit exam for undergraduate medical students, licentiate exam to practise medicine and criteria for admission to postgraduate (PG) medical courses, will be implemented within three years.
  • It will also be used to screen foreign medical graduates intending to work or study in India. The MCI was dissolved in 2018 following allegations of corruption, and a board of governors constituted to take over its functioning.
  • The health ministry will soon notify the National Medical Commission (NMC) Act 2019 that received Presidential assent after Parliament cleared it on August 5, 2019.
  • The 33-member commission will have 29 doctors as members in different capacities. The states will be represented by 19 members. Of them, 10 members will be the vice-chancellors of various universities across states, and nine will belong to various state medical councils.

New paper in biomed engineering in GATE 2020

  •  A new paper Biomedical Engineering (BM) in Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is introduced from the year 2020. 
  • This is expected to unify undergraduate syllabus of biomedical engineering among several universities in India. 
  • The BME Sector in India is in need of a major development mainly due to the lack of adequate integration between research institutions, hospitals, industries, and universities in India. 
  • The challenges of BME graduates in India were discussed in a recent meeting held at IIT Madras, which was organized by BME Group of Applied Mechanics Department, IIT Madras, along with representatives from several other IITs. 
  • The meeting was chaired by Prof. V. Jagadeesh Kumar, Dean (Academic Courses), IIT Madras, and co-chaired by Neelesh Vasa who was the GATE Chairman in 2018.
  •  After analysing the issues, it was decided to propose a new GATE paper for BME.Until now, BME graduates could write two papers in GATE: IN (Instrumentation and Engineering), and EC (Electronics and Communication Engineering).

Oz cancer Patient Ends Life Using Assisted Dying Law

  • A 61-year-old cancer patient became the first person in over two decades to die under controversial assisted dying laws in Australia. Kerry Robertson died in July, 2019, three months after the mother-of-two ceased treatment for metastatic breast cancer. The state of Victoria passed a law in 2017 to legalise the practice.

Include all above 60 years in national health insurance scheme

  •  On the occasion of World Bone and Joint Day on July 04, 2019, the Indian Orthopaedic Association (IOA) demanded that elderly persons across economic strata to be included in government's Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY).
  • The association submitted a joint memorandum to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union minister of health and family welfare, requesting that the citizens above 60 across all economic strata to be included in the world's largest public health insurance scheme.
  • The scheme as of now provides any insurance cover of Rs.5 lakh per family to about 104 million eligible families for hospitalisation.

Nitish seeks Central status for university

  •  Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar lamented that his fervent request for grant of central status to Patna University two years ago was dismissed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi denying the institution much-needed help.
  • He said he is hopeful now that the university will get its due as Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu is present at the programme held to observe the centenary of the library of the varsity.

Centre identifies 4 districts for cash transfer pilot under Poshan scheme

  •  The Centre has finally selected two districts each in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan for a pilot scheme to study whether cash transfers will work better instead of take home ration for pregnant women and lactating mothers as well as children between six months and three years of age.

A step closer to oral administration of kala-azar drug

  •  IIT Hyderabad achieved controlled, sustained drug release for 10 days
  • By encapsulating an antifungal drug in polymer nanofibres, researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Hyderabad have been able to achieve controlled and sustained release of the drug for up to 10 days.
  • Most importantly, the antifungal activity against Candida albicans was observed when the encapsulated drug was compressed to form oral tablets. This would mean that oral administration of the drug might become possible if initial results achieved in the lab can be replicated in animal and human clinical trials.
