Apple Card Sparks Gender Debate

  •  A Wall Street regulator is opening a probe into Goldman Sachs Group Inc's credit card practices after a viral tweet from a tech entrepreneur alleged gender discrimination in the new Apple Card's algorithms when determining credit limits.
  • The department will be conducting an investigation to determine whether New York law was violated and ensure all consumers are treated equally regardless of sex.

Maternal death rate declining: report

  • India's Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) has seen a decline from 130 per 1 lakh live births in 2014-2016 to 122 per 1 lakh live births in 2015-2017.
  • A decline of 8 points (6.2%) was observed during this period, according to the latest Sample Registration System (SRS) 2015-2017 bulletin for MMR.
  • This is good news for India as nearly 2,000 maternal deaths have been averted per year, according to the bulletin.
  • The figure has declined from 167 in 2011-2013 to 130 in 2014-2016 and to 122 in 2015-17, registering a 6.15 per cent reduction since the last survey figures of 2014-2016.

AIIMS, KMC and University Of Michigan to Collaborate on Genetic Testing

  •  Researcher from the University of Michigan will collaborate with All India Institute of Medical Sciences and Kasturba Medical College – Manipal with the help of a grant from the National Institute of Health.
  • The grants which come up to $ 2.3 million will be used for the research to expand genetic testing in India. The partnership is expected to help the geneticists in identifying and confirming that genetic changes are the basis of developmental disorders.
  • Associate professor of Human Genetics at the University of Michigan Medical School, Stephanie Bielas said that without genetic diagnosis individuals with rare disorders may acquire inappropriate care and medical procedures.
  • She also added that an accurate molecular diagnosis can in a huge way to improve the care management of individuals with rare development disorders and also involved treatments.
  • Stephanie who is working with her partners in AIIMS and KMS has been building on technological and organizational infrastructure which is needed to improve access to genetic testing in the country for the last 4 years.

WHO initiative to expand access to affordable insulin

  • Insulin is available in only 1 in 3 of the poorest countries
  • Ahead of the World Diabetes Day on November 14, the World Health Organisation (WHO) is launching an initiative to expand access to affordable insulin.
  • Stating that more than 420 million people worldwide, mostly in low- and middle-income countries, live with diabetes, WHO noted that many who require insulin do not have access, often due to high costs.

  • The minister announced and distributed Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) certificates to 500 candidates to boost their morale in the presence of several dignitaries including Shri Puran Davar, President, AFMEC and Shri PR Aqeel Ahmed, Chairman, Council for Leather Exports (CLE) and Leather Sector Skill Council (LSSC).

CBSE To Observe Fitness Week In November As Part Of Fit India Movement

  •  In an attempt to promote fitness among school children, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will be observing Fitness Week in the second and third week of November, 2019 as a part of Fit India Movement.
  • The prime objective of the initiative is to bring about a behavioural change in school children from spending "Passive Screen Time" to "Active Field Time".
  • As many as 22,000 CBSE schools from all over the country will participate in this first-of-its-kind endeavour.

Third Guinness World Record Created At Science Festival

  •  Students created another Guinness World Record, the last day of the India International Science Festival (IISF), by forming the world's largest prototype of a human chromosome at the Science City.
  • This is the third Guinness World Record created at the IISF.
  • An estimated 400 school children wearing sky blue, navy blue and yellow dresses formed a chromosome pattern.

Kolkata Students Create Guinness World Records With Largest Astrophysics Assemble

  •  The Guinness World Records for the largest astrophysics lesson (45 minutes) and assembly of spectroscopes was successfully achieved at the Science City, Kolkata on the first day of India International Science Festival (IISF) 2019 with the participation of over 1,598 students.
  • Astronomers use spectroscopes to know details like temperature, chemical composition, etc. of celestial objects hundreds or millions of light years away from us.
  • A small personal model of advanced spectroscopes can easily be made by anyone using a box made of cardboard that has a very narrow window used to channel light into the spectroscope.
  • A piece of a Compact Disc is used to split the light by a process called diffraction. This attempt is dedicated to Meghnad Saha and C. V. Raman.

Lucknow Railway Station Gets 'Health ATM'

  •  The Indian Railways has installed two 'Health ATMs' at the Charbagh railway station in Lucknow.
  • The kiosks, promoted by YOLO Health ATM, provide 16 health check-ups for Rs 50-100. There are two types of check-ups -- a 9-minute one that costs Rs 100, and a 6-minute one that costs Rs 50. The report is delivered instantly to the email or smartphone of the user.
  • Health ATMs can be defined as private, walk-in medical kiosks with integrated medical devices for basic vitals, cardiology, neurology, pulmonary testing, gynecology, basic laboratory testing and emergency facilities and staffed by a medical attendant.

Mercedes-Benz, Mattel Partner For STEM/STEAM Day

  •  On National STEM/STEAM Day on Nov. 8, 2019,  Mercedes-Benz and Mattel will partner on programs across the U.S. to challenge gender stereotypes in the STEM/STEAM industries.
  • More than 50,000 young girls across the nation will engage in programs as part of the "No Limits" initiative championed by Mercedes-Benz, Mattel and the National Girls Collaborative Project (NGCP), a network of organizations that encourage girls to pursue science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) careers.

Sun Pharma Ties Up With AstraZeneca To Sell Novel Oncology Drugs In China

  •  As Sun Pharmaceuticals enhances its focus on the Chinese market, the company has entered into a licensing agreement with AstraZeneca UK Ltd to introduce certain novel ready-to-use infusion oncology products in China.
  • According to the agreement, Sun Pharma will be responsible for developing, making regulatory filings and manufacturing the products, while AstraZeneca will exclusively promote and distribute these products in China. The initial tenure of the agreement is 10 years from the first commercial sale of the said products in China.
