Andhra launches Rs. 12,000cr Scheme to Introduce English Medium in Govt. Schools

  •  Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y. S. Jaganmohan Reddy launched the 'Nadu-Nedu' programme to introduce English medium from Classes 1 to 6 in state-run schools.
  • He also announced that the government will introduce another scheme called 'Amma Vodi' in January 2020 to give incentives to mothers who send their children to school and continue their education till class 12.
  • In the first phase, the 'Nadu-Nedu' programme will be implemented in 15,715 schools. It will cover all schools in three years under a budget of Rs. 12,000 crores.
  • For the first year in the initial phase, Rs. 3,500 crores will be spent for infrastructure development.

Air Force Chief Wants To Draw Youth To Aerospace Medicine

  •  The chief of the Indian Air Force has a new concern — lack of interest among doctors to pursue aviation medicine.
  • At the 57th conference of the Indian Society of Aerospace Medicine (ISAM), IAF chief Air Chief Marshal R.K.S. Bhadauria asked: "How come youngsters are not taking this up as a preferred field?"
  • Praising the aviation medicine fraternity as a principal contributor in keeping pilots fit and maintaining the combat capability of the Air Force, he said the area has not attracted young doctors because it does not offer good career growth or opportunities for super-specialisation.

Climate Change To Hurt Health Of Children Born In India For Life: Lancet

  •  At current emission rates, a child born today will face lifelong health impacts of climate change, according to a new report. By the time he or she turns 71, the world will be 4 degrees-Celsius (deg-C) warmer than the pre-industrial levels of the mid-1700s. The Lancet Countdown report published in The Lancet, a medical journal:
  • Shrinking average yields of rice and maize will inflate the price of these crops, increasing the malnutrition burden, which is already higher among Indian children
  • Changing weather will increase the prevalence of infectious diarrhoeal and mosquito-borne diseases to which children are particularly susceptible
  • Air pollution will worsen, increasing the number of deaths attributable to fine particulates
  • Incidence of severe floods, prolonged droughts and wildfires will increase with rising temperature, putting lives at risk

Telangana Police Station Creates "Child-Friendly Corners"

  •  On the occasion of 'Bal Diwas', a day dedicated to children, Bachpan Bachao Andolan (BBA) and Rachakonda Police Commissionerate joined hands to inaugurate Telangana's first 'child- friendly' police station.
  • The Rachakonda Medipally station has "child-friendly corners" with books, games, beds and water coolers that make for a safe environment for juvenile delinquents as well as kids accompanying their parents.
  • The station was inaugurated by 7-year-old D. Ishan whose dream is to become a cop when he grows up. And the chief guest was Rachakonda Police Commissioner Mahesh Bhagwat.

Review of Verdict Allowing Women, Girls Into Sabarimala

  •  In a 3:2 majority verdict, the Supreme Court referred to a larger 7-judge bench the pleas seeking review of its historic 2018 judgement allowing women and girls of all ages to enter Kerala's Sabarimala temple, set to open on November 17, along with other contentious issues of alleged discrimination against Muslim and Parsi women.
  • As the majority verdict, penned by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, kept the review pleas pending for a 7-judge bench and did not stay its September 28, 2018 majority judgement, girls and women of all age groups will be entitled to undertake the pilgrimage to the shrine.

Women to be allowed to Perform Kirtan inside Golden Temple

  •  The Punjab Assembly unanimously passed a resolution urging the Akal Takht and the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee to allow Sikh women to sing hymns in the sanctum sanctorum of the Golden Temple in Amritsar.
  • The resolution was moved by Minister Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa who said Sikhism founder Guru Nanak Dev fought against caste and gender inequality throughout his life and this discrimination against women should also end.

CSIR-IMTECH Signs MOU with IIT Bombay for Collaborative Research

  •  CSIR-Institute of Microbial Technology (IMTECH), Chandigarh signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay to promote collaborative research.
  • The MoU will facilitate exchange of ideas, development of new knowledge and enhance high quality research acumen between the researchers and faculty of both the institutes.
  • The objective of this collaboration is to carry out state of the art research in areas of healthcare especially in projects and mission where both the institutes can significantly complement each other.
  • This MoU is in line with the circular issued by MHRD in 2018 paving way for all IITs to sign MoUs with National Research Laboratories affiliated to CSIR to start new collaborations and to deepen, broaden interactions where such collaborations already exist.

IL&FS Sells Education Biz to Kota co Career Point

  •  Lenders to the troubled IL&FS have approved the sale of its education business Schoolnet India to Career Point Publications. Headquartered in Kota, Rajasthan, and founded in 1993, Career Point publishes across a range of pre-medical and engineering subjects.
  • The financial bid of Career Point was approved by more than 78% of IL&FS' creditors (by value) through an evoting process that concluded on November 5, 2019.
  •  The transaction for the education business is the second major one after the group concluded the sale of its wind energy assets to Orix of Japan.

Government's Go-Ahead For 4 Medical Device Parks

  •  The government has given approval for setting up four medical device parks with a view to support Make in India initiative and provide world-class products at affordable price for treatment.
  • The four parks will be set up in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Kerala.  Uttarakhand and Gujarat have also approached the Centre for a go-ahead for such parks.
  • These parks will provide necessary infrastructure, where companies can easily plug and play.
  • This will not only cut import bill but will also help in easy access to standard testing facilities and reduce cost of production.
  • The project of Andhra Pradesh Medtech Zone for creation of Common Facility Centre (CFC) for Superconducting Magnetic Coil Testing and Research was given in-principle approval recently.
  • The scheme proposes to provide Rs 25 crore or 70 per cent of the project cost of setting up of CFCs, whichever is less, for creation of common facilities in any upcoming park.
