Ayurveda Medicines for Treating Lifestyle Diseases

  •  Ministry of AYUSH in collaboration with Ministry of Health & Family Welfare has implemented a project viz Integration of AYUSH (Ayurveda) with National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardio-vascular Diseases and Stroke (NPCDCS) program in the identified Districts.
  • So far 9,87,446 patients have been screened and 93117 patients have been enrolled for long term management through Ayurveda interventions, Lifestyle modifications and Yoga.
  • Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS), under Ministry of AYUSH has developed AYUSH-82, a formulation through extensive research methodologies and the same has been commercialised for further benefit of public at large.
  • CCRAS has developed AYUSH-QOL-2C for improving Quality of life of breast & cervical cancer patients in collaboration with All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi and St. Jones Medical College (Bengaluru).

Gujarat Government To Ban Sale Of Junk Food In And Around Schools

  •  The Gujarat government is in the process of banning sale of junk food in schools as well as in the 50-meter area around them to encourage consumption of healthy food among children.
  • The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has recommended a ban on sale of food high in fat, salt and sugar (HFSS) in schools and the state government is in the process of framing draft rules for the same.
  • To promote healthy food eating habits among children, a ban has to be imposed on sale of food with high fat, sugar and salt in school canteens as well as in the 50-meter area around schools.
  • Advertisements of junk food will also not be allowed in and around schools.

Cabinet Approves Establishment of National Institute for Sowa-Rigpa in Leh

  •  The Union Cabinet approved the establishment of the National Institute for Sowa-Rigpa (NISR) in Leh as an autonomous organization under the Ministry of AYUSH at an estimated cost of Rs. 47.25 crore.
  • It also approved creation of the post of director in Level-14 to oversee implementation of the project from the construction stage itself.
  • Consequent to the formation of Ladakh as Union Territory and for the promotion of native culture of Ladakh, it has been decided by the Government of India to promote Sowa-Rigpa system of medicine by establishing a National Institute for Sowa-Rigpa(NISR) at Leh, Union Territory of Ladakh.

2019 World Conference on Access to Medical Products

  •  The 2019 World Conference on Access to Medical Products- Achieving the SDGs 2030 will be convened from 19-21 November 2019 in New Delhi.
  • It is being jointly organized by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW) and the World Health Organization, in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR); Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC); and Translational Health Science and Technology Institute (THSTI).
  • Launched in the year 2017, the conference will take forward the previous two years' recommendations being pursued at the international and national levels by key ministries in the Government of India.
  • Achieving the sustainable development goals (SDGs 2030) agenda requires an enabling trade and legal regime for public health, with access to medical products, sustained dialogue and engagement with key stakeholders.

Government Launches Bharatiya Poshan Krishi Kosh To Tackle Malnutrition

  •  The Union Government has launched Bharatiya Poshan Krishi Kosh with the aim of reducing malnutrition in India.
  • The kosh was launched by WCD Minister Smriti Irani along with Bill Gates on November 18, 2019 in New Delhi.
  • The Bharatiya Poshan Krishi Kosh is a repository of diverse crops across 128 agro-climatic zones to help enable better nutritional outcomes.
  • The Kosh aims to reduce malnutrition among women and children across the country, through a multi-sectoral results-based framework, including agriculture.

Health Ministry Signs Pact With Gates Foundation For Support In Innovation

  •  The Union ministry of health and family welfare signed a memorandum of cooperation (MoC) with Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF).
  • Under the MoC, Gates Foundation will provide technical, management and program design support through its grantees and other partners, with a special focus on innovation, best practices and enhancing performance management, while working closely with the government.

Odisha MP Achyuta Samanta Aspires To Set Up Free Educational Institutes Across Country

  •  Buoyed by the success of Odisha's Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences, which provides free education to nearly 30,000 tribal students, it's founder Achyuta Samanta has said he aspired to launch similar projects in other states to fight social ills of poverty and naxalism.
  • In his home state, the Kandhamal MP said ten new centres would come up soon in tribal-dominated areas, in addition to the parent institute at Bhubaneswar and satellite units elsewhere in Odisha.

Uttarakhand Government Starts Virtual Classroom To Mitigate Teacher Shortage

  •  Benefitting around 1.90 lakh students from classes 6-12, the Uttarakhand government started the Virtual Classroom Project, an online method of teaching, where teachers sitting in specials studios in Dehradun will teach students live.
  • This project was started under the Information and Communication Technology scheme of 'Samagra Sikshar Abhiyan' in the state.
  • While launching the project, which in the initial phase covers 150 schools, chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat inaugurated the first such studio in Dehradun. He even interacted with students from different schools from remote areas using the technology.

ICMR Inks Deal With US Body, Gates Foundation For Healthcare Research Collaboration

  • The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) inked a declaration of intent with a US institution and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to take forward an ongoing collaborative research and training programme between the two countries.
  • The declaration of intent between ICMR and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAD) of the National Institutes of Health, USA and BMGF was exchanged in the presence of U.S Ambassador Kenneth I Juster and Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation co-chair Bill Gates.

Delhi Has The Most Unsafe Tap Water

  •  If it wasn't enough that Delhi air is among the world's most polluted, a new study has now shown that the city's tap water is the most unsafe among 21 State capitals.
  • The national capital is at the very bottom of the list, in a ranking based on tap water quality released by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).
  • It is among 13 cities, including Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Jaipur and Lucknow, where all tested samples failed to meet the BIS norms for piped drinking water. In fact, Mumbai is the only city where all samples of tap water met all the tested parameters under the Indian Standard 10500:2012 (specification for drinking water) so far.
