Fortis' New Name Parkway

  • Fortis Healthcare's board gave an in-principle nod to change the name of the company and its subsidiaries to 'Parkway' in relation to the hospital business, to disassociate itself from the erstwhile promoters.
  • 'Parkway' is an internationally acclaimed brand in the field of healthcare, belonging to the IHH Group, the ultimate parent of Northern TK Venture Pte Ltd, which has 31 per cent shareholding. Singh brothers — Shivinder and Malvinder — were the promoters of Fortis Healthcare.

Jamia and AMU among top-scoring Universities

  • In a performance assessment carried out of 40 central universities, New Delhi based Jamia Millia Islami (JMI) bagged the top position with 90% points. Arunachal Pradesh's Rajiv Gandhi University ranked 2nd with 83% points and Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) ranked 3rd with 78% points.
  • The ministry of education's assessment of central universities for the year 2019-20 has shown Jamia Millia Islamia to be one of the top-ranking universities in the country. The score is based on a tri-partite agreement between the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the ministry of higher education division.
  • For the year 2019-20, JMI has secured 95.23% score in an overall assessment, as indicated in a letter sent by the Ministry of Human Resource and Development (MHRD). This is an indication that the administration and faculty members are highly focussed on achieving the target and have the potential to deliver, Jamia Milllia Islamia administration said in a press statement.
  • Evaluation is based on parametres such as student intake in UG, PG and PhD, MPhil. with the percentage of female students, students who are admitted from other states, the ratio of foreign students, student-teacher ratio, quality of faculty, etc.

IIT Roorkee Announces Online Programmes In AI, Machine Learning And Data Science

  • Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee, or IIT Roorkee, announced two online certificate programmes -- Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning, and Data Science in partnership with Coursera. IIT Roorkee will launch both these programs on Coursera in early 2021.
  • The six-month certificate programme in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning will consist of video lectures, hands-on learning opportunities, team projects, tutorials, and workshops.
  • In addition to providing the coding knowledge and mathematics necessary for building AI and ML expertise, the program will also teach classical ML techniques and provide hands-on programming experience with Tensorflow for model building, robust ML production, and powerful experimentation.

Russia Registers the World's First Coronavirus Vaccine

  • President Vladimir Putin said that Russia has become the world's first country to grant regulatory approval to a COVID-19 vaccine after less than two months of human testing, a move hailed by Moscow as evidence of its scientific prowess.
  • The vaccine still has to complete final trials, raising concerns among some experts at the speed of its approval, but the Russian business conglomerate Sistema expects to put it into mass production by the end of the year.
  • Russian health workers treating COVID-19 patients will be offered the chance of volunteering to be vaccinated in the coming weeks.
  • Regulatory approval paves the way for the mass inoculation of the Russian population and authorities hope it will allow the economy, which has been battered by fallout from the virus, to return to full capacity.
  • The vaccine will be marketed under the name 'Sputnik V' on foreign markets.

IIT-Madras to Start a Course on Biomimicry

  • The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras will soon offer a course on biomimicry. It would be a full semester, elective course and would teach students to imitate nature as a source of inspiration to solve complex problems, the IIT-Madras informed.
  • "Biomimicry is the intersection of biology and engineering. You do not have to be either a biologist or an engineer to learn biomimicry, all you need is curiosity.
  • Students can have multiple applications from one organism, and there are millions of such organisms that have evolved strategies over billions of years of adaptation to our planet. We can use these blueprints and recipes from nature to design and build solutions for our world.
  • IIT-Madras claims to be among the first institutions in India to offer a full-fledged course on biomimicry. The course will be taught by MS Sivakumar – dean of students, IIT-Madras, Shiva Subramaniam, CIO, Gopalakrishnan-Deshpande Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, IIT-Madras, Satyanarayanan Seshadri, department of applied mechanics, and Srinivasa Chakravarthy a professor at Department of Biotechnology.

SPPU Offers New Courses on Entrepreneurship

  • The Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) is taking steps to encourage entrepreneurship amongst students, including starting a new postgraduate diploma course on entrepreneurship. On Wednesday, an MoU was signed between the Centre for Innovation, Incubation and Enterprise (CIIE) at SPPU and the Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDII), to deliver joint certification courses in entrepreneurship.
  • The courses would cover new venture and innovation management, development of faculty to lead entrepreneurship initiatives and are expected to create awareness about entrepreneurship in the student community.
  • Dr Apoorva Palkar, head of CIIE, said that the partnership will help bring in top class entrepreneurship education from the "best in class faculty" and mentorship support of EDII.

MBBS Students Not to be Promoted Without Exams

  • Amid covid-19 pandemic, where many universities are promoting students without any examination, the Board of Governors, Medical Council of India, MCI issued an advisory saying that no batch must be allowed to move to the next level of MBBS course without appearing for exams. All the medical colleges and universities are requested to conduct exams and then promote the MBBS students.
  • Further, the council said that the final year students of various MBBS colleges can join internships once they pass their exams.
  • The colleges must aim to complete the MBBS course first which includes practicals, labs, demonstrations, etc, within two months of reopening of the colleges. And once permitted by the government, the colleges can conduct the MBBS exams in a month.
  • Regarding the conduct of 2nd/3rd (Part 1) and Final year MBBS examination for 2020, the time required for completion of the course would depend on the timing of the re-opening of the medical colleges.
