Togo First in Africa to Eradicate Sleeping Sickness

  • According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Togo has become the first African country to eliminate sleeping sickness as a public health problem.
  • It received "validation" of the sickness' elimination after not reporting a single case in the past 10 years.
  • "Togo is a pathfinder in eliminating sleeping sickness, a disease which has threatened millions of Africans.
  • Sleeping sickness, or human African trypanosomiasis, is caused by parasites which are transmitted by infected tsetse flies and is only found in 36 countries in sub-Saharan Africa.

Supreme Court Upholds UGC Decision

  • The Supreme Court ordered that no state government and universities can promote final year students without holding final year university examinations amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • However, the Court gave states the discretion to approach the University Grants Commission (UGC) for an extension of the deadline by which final year exams should be completed.
  • A bench headed by Justice Ashok Bhushan said if any state it cannot conduct exams by that date, they must approach the UGC for new dates to hold the exam.
  • The Supreme Court had reserved its order on a batch of pleas challenging a circular of the University Grants Commission (UGC) mandating to conduct the final term exams in all affiliated universities by the end of September.

Gujarat: 12 Colleges Identified to be Converted into Universities

  • AFTER several deliberations and discussions with stakeholders over the implementation of National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in Gujarat, the state Education Department has identified 12 colleges, one in each district that can be converted into universities.
  • As the National Education Policy under Clause No. 9.3 (a) stipulates that every district should have at least one university, the state government under its immediate implementation plan had identified 12 districts not having universities– Aravalli, Bharuch, Botad, Chhota Udepur, Dang, Devbhoomi Dwarka, Dahod, Amreli, Mahisagar, Morbi, Porbandar and Tapi.
  • One college each in these 12 districts too have been identified which are capable of being run as a university. These include both technical and non-technical as well as government and grant-in-aid colleges. Out of these 12, nine are grant in aid, three are government and two womens' colleges.

Tripura Launches First ever Diploma Courses on GST, Retail and Sales Management

  • Tripura's lone state university Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) University announced a host of professional and foreign language courses in the midst of COVID-19 pandemic including the state's first-ever diploma courses on Goods and Service Tax (GST.
  • Assistant Controller of Examinations Rakesh Roy said that the newly launched courses include four evening diploma courses on GST, retail and sales management, insurance risk management and Spanish language. Two Integrated Masters Degree (IMD) courses on commerce and chemistry are also being launched along with the one year diploma programmes in the university.
  • Describing the new courses as a novel, Dr. Roy stated that these would open up new ways of employment for students. Students who have already qualified their Higher Secondary or its equivalent examinations with at least four subjects including English from any recognised education board or council would be eligible to seek admission in these new courses.
  • Each of these new courses will allow 60 students to take admission by August 31. The admission process for intake in these programmes have already commenced in the meantime. Courses fees for the one year evening diploma programmes in GST, retail and sales management, insurance risk management and Spanish language were set in self-financing mode and candidates would have to shell out Rs. 23,000 per semester for these courses.
