In a move that is being hailed by medical experts as a "radical reform" in the field of higher medical education, the central government and the Medical Council of India (MCI) have given the go-ahead for launching post-graduate diploma courses that can be undertaken after completing MBBS.

Atal Ranking of ARIIA 2020

  • The Atal Ranking of Institutions on Innovation Achievements (ARIIA) 2020 was announced by the vice-president of India, M. Venkaiah Naidu. As per the ARIIA 2020 rankings, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras topped the Best Centrally Funded Institute category.
  • IIT Madras has topped the ARIIA rankings in this category for the second time. This year, the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology, Odisha (KIIT) topped the rankings in the Best Private institution category.
  • The ARIIA 2020 are calculated on the basis of seven parameters- budget and funding support, infrastructure and facilities, awareness, promotions, and support for idea generation and innovation, promotion and support for entrepreneurship development, innovative learning methods and courses, intellectual property generation, technology transfer and commercialization and innovation in the governance of the institution.
  • ARIIA 2020 or Atal rankings 2020 are an initiative started by the Ministry of Education along with the All Indian Council of Technical Education (AICTE). It ranks the technical institutes of India across six major categories every year.
  • The objective or ARIIA 2020 is to rank higher education institutions and universities in India as per Innovation, Entrepreneurship, Startup, and Development amongst faculty and students.

IIT-Kharagpur Opens Academy of Classical and Folk Arts

  • The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Kharagpur inaugurated the Academy of Classical and Folk Arts on its campus. It will offer training on music, fine arts, and other performing arts.
  • Hindustani classical vocalist Pandit Ajoy Chakrabarty will head the '100 ragas' initiative of the academy. It aims to formulate deep structures of Indian ragas by forging creative arts with cognitive sciences.
  • It is essential for an institute of national importance to focus on the holistic development of its students, staff, and faculty members. The Academy of Classical and Folk Arts is first-of-its-kind in IIT Kharagpur.

HRD Ministry Officially Renamed as Ministry of Education

  • With the accent of President Ram Nath Kovind, the change in name of the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has been given signal. The HRD Ministry is now renamed as Ministry of Education.
  • The change in the name of HRD Ministry was among the key recommendations of the draft new National Education Policy (NEP), which was also cleared by the Union Cabinet last month.
  • the ministry of education was renamed as the HRD ministry in 1985 during the tenure of then prime minister Rajiv Gandhi.
  • The National Education Policy was introduced the next year and it was later amended in 1992.

BITS Pilani Starts Online Classes for MBA

  • BITS Pilani announced to commence the first semester of 2020-21 in online mode for both first and second year students of MBA. The session will start from August 17. This has been done as a special measure during the recent pandemic caused by COVID-19.
  • As a precursor to this semester, the institute has been conducting a series of webinars for its MBA students since July 11 this year. Several eminent personalities from the industry and academia have been invited to share their experiences and interact with students through these webinars.

NSE, IIMB Join Hands to Offer Platform for Investor Education

  • National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) Investor Protection Fund Trust (NSE IPFT) and Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) have jointly developed and launched Platform for Investor Education (PIE), an online investor education resource centre.
  • The PIE was launched in a virtual meet attended by Mr. Nagendraa Parakh, Executive Director of SEBI, Mr. Vikram Limaye MD & CEO of NSE and Professor Rishikesha T Krishnan, Director of IIM Bangalore.
  • PIE will serve as a unique platform to impart investor education in a simpler way through video, audio and other digital media formats.
  • The platform would consist of four learning modules comprising videos, audios, podcasts, deep-dives and blog posts.
  • It will present the content using Animation and Data Visualization Technology to actively engage the potential investors.
  • The platform will provide an option to access the audio content in multiple languages to cater to a larger set of audience.

IIT Kharagpur Researchers Develop E-Classroom for Teachers

  • Researchers at IIT Kharagpur have developed a software which can be of immense help to teachers who are currently facing challenges as the entire classroom session has shifted to online mode in different educational institutions in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Prof. Raja Datta of Electronics and Electrical Communication Department with his postgraduate students developed the software, the current version of which can be used within a campus LAN.
  • Talking about the software 'Deekshak', Datta said that it is now a single session platform where the teacher would concentrate on the screen with the teaching materials while being able to view queries on a live chat box where each student can send in their queries.
  • Students also have access to a doubt box where they can click to "raise their hand" and wait for the teacher to address it, as is done in a physical classroom.
  • Teachers can also share documents with the students through the platform and even update notes on the documents in real-time.
  • 'Deekshak' is a low bandwidth web-based software and can be accessed using any computer or even a cell phone.
