Balakot: Woman Flight Controller Wins Medal

  •  Squadron Leader Minty Aggarwal, the fighter controller who played a significant role in intercepting the Pakistan Air Force's attempt to launch retaliatory air attacks after the Indian Air Force's (IAF) Balakot air strikes, was awarded the Yudh Seva Medal on the eve of Independence Day.
  • She is the first woman in the India's military history to be awarded the YSM, a medal that recognises distinguished service of a high order during war, conflict or hostilities.
  • YSM is not a gallantry award.

Medal Of Excellence In Investigation Awarded To 96 Police Personnel 

  •  Ninety-six police personnel, including 15 Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officers, have been awarded the "Union Home Minister's Medal for Excellence in Investigation."
  • Among the personnel receiving these awards, 11 are from Maharashtra Police, 10 are from Uttar Pradesh Police, 9 are from Kerala Police, 8 are from Madhya Pradesh Police, 6 are from Delhi Police and Karnataka Police and the remaining from the other States/UT and Central Investigating Agencies
  • The recipients include 13 women officers. 
  • The award was instituted in 2018 with the objective of promoting high professional standards of investigation of crime and to recognise such excellence in investigation by officers. 

Awardees On 73rd India's Independence Day 2019

  •  President Ram Nath Kovind, who is also the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, has approved 132 Awards to Armed Forces Personnel and members of Paramilitary Forces.
  • The awards include two Kirti Chakras, one Vir Chakra, 14 Shaurya Chakras, eight Bar to Sena Medals (Gallantry), 90 Sena Medals (Gallantry), five Nao Sena Medals (Gallantry), seven Vayu Sena Medals (Gallantry) and five Yudh Seva Medals.

  • Wing Commander ABHINANDAN VARTHAMAN was awarded the third-highest wartime gallantry award for shooting down a Pakistani F-16 combat jet on February 27 – a day after the Balakot operation – before he was shot down and captured on the other side of Line of Control. This is the IAF's first Vir Chakra since the Kargil war.
  • In addition, President Ram Nath Kovind has also awarded one President's Tatrakshak Medal (Distinguished Service), five Tatrakshak Medals (Gallantry) and two Tatrakshak Medal (Meritorious Service) to Indian Coast Guard personnels for their act of conspicuous gallantry and distinguished/meritorious service.

SP Mishra To Be Conferred With Award

  •  SP Mishra, Deputy Director (Media), M/o Social Justice & Empowerment, will be conferred with 'Rashtriya Media Ratna 2018' by Media Press Club.
  • The award will be given to those personalities whose contribution is commendable at ground zero for making news and posting it through proper channel of media for their organisation.
  • The work of SP Mishra is commendable so his name has been selected for the award.

Painter Vasudev Wins French Cultural Award

  •  Leading film scholar, editor and painter Aruna Vasudev was presented the Officier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters), one of France's highest cultural honours, for her contribution to cinema and arts. 
  • French ambassador Alexandre Ziegler conferred the award on Vasudev at a ceremony.

NITI Aayog To Launch 4th Edition Of WTI Awards

  •  NITI Aayog launched the 4th Edition of Women Transforming India (WTI) Awards. The WTI Awards is being organized in collaboration with the United Nations to recognize women entrepreneurs from across India.
  • This year's theme is 'Women and Entrepreneurship', in continuation of the theme for WTI Awards 2018. WhatsApp collaborated with NITI Aayog for WTI Awards 2019. The main aim is to provide support amounting to US$100,000 to the award winners.
  • The Women Entrepreneurship Platform (WEP) is a Government of India initiative by NITI Aayog to promote and support aspiring as well as established women entrepreneurs in India, assist and handhold them in their journey from starting to scaling up and expanding their ventures.

Charlie Chaplin Award

  •  Actor Steve Coogan won with the Charlie Chaplin Award by the British Academy's Los Angeles branch. He will receive the honor during the 2019 Britannia Awards.
  • The Charlie Chaplin Britannia Award for Excellence in Comedy recognizes the talents whose popularity and cultural impact exemplifies the uniquely transcendent quality of excellent comedy.

Biopic Gets National Award

  •  Harjeet Singh is the most recent captain to win the FIH Junior World Cup in 2016. 
  • For, the biopic 'Harjeeta' — based on his life's early struggles and his incredible journey from being born to a truck driver in rural Punjab to leading India to its only hockey World Cup at any level in 15 years — had won a National Award for Best Punjabi Film.

Shah Rukh Khan To Be Felicitated With 'Excellence In Cinema' Award

  •  Superstar Shah Rukh Khan will be felicitated with 'Excellence in Cinema' honour at the awards night of Indian Film Festival of Melbourne on August 8,2019.
  • The festival would pay tribute to the actor's continuous contribution to cinema and popular culture in India with the award.

66th National Film Awards

  •   Actors Ayushmann Khurrana and Vicky Kaushal jointly won the National Film Award in the Best Actor category for their roles in 'Andhadhun' and 'Uri', respectively. 
  • Keerthy Suresh won the Best Actress award for her portrayal of yesteryear star Savitri, in the Telugu film 'Mahanati'.
  • The Gujarati film 'Hellaro' was declared the best film.
  • The 66th National Film Awards, delayed this year because their original scheduled date coincided with the general elections held in May 2019. 
  • Aditya Dhar was picked as the Best Director award for his debut 'Uri: The Surgical Strike', while 'Andhadhun' won the awards for Best Hindi Film and Best Adapted Screenplay.
  • 'Badhaai Ho', a film that showcased the travails of a couple who conceived at a much advanced age, was adjudged the Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment; veteran actor Surekha Sikri was adjudged Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the same film.
  • 'Padman', starring Akshay Kumar, was named the Best Film on Social Issues. The film is based on Arunachalam Muruganantham, a social entrepreneur who became the inventor of lowcost sanitary pads.
  • Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 'Padmavaat' won for Best Choreography for the song Ghoomer; Bhansali won the award for Best Music Director. Singer-lyricist Swanand Kirkire won the Best Supporting Actor award for Marathi film 'Chumbak'.

Nilekani To Receive Honorary Doctorate From IIT Bombay

  •  Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani is set to receive an honorary doctorate from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay – his alma mater. Nilekani completed his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the same institute.
  • The IIT had written to the Union human resource development ministry for approval to give the degree to Nilekani, who has also led the government's efforts to establish Aadhaar and contested a Lok Sabha election on a Congress ticket from Bangalore.

Bharat Ratna 2019 Award Winners

  •  President Ram Nath Kovind conferred the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour at a grand ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan to Pranab Mukherjee, Bhupen Hazarika, and Nanaji Deshmukh.
  • Pranab Mukherjee
    Pranab Mukherjee''s life-long political career spanned about five decades, during which he held various key posts in the Congress as well as in the governments led by Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, P V Narasimha Rao and Manmohan Singh. The 83-year-old served as India's 13th President from 2012-2017, but prior to his election to the post, Mukherjee also served as the Union Finance Minister from 2009 to 2012.
  • Bhupen Hazarika
    Assamese singer Bhupen Hazarika was most popular in Bengal and Bangladesh and was responsible for introducing the culture and folk music of Assam and northeast India to Hindi cinema. Popularly known as Sudhakantha, meaning the nightingale, he had received the National Film Award, Padmashri, Dada Saheb Phalke Award, Padma Vibhushan, and many other prestigious honours. He was known for his baritone voice and for making music on themes ranging from romance to social and political commentary. Some of his renowned works in Assamese music which audiences still enjoy includes "Bistirno Parore", "Moi Eti Jajabo", "Ganga Mor Maa", and "Bimurto Mur Nixati Jen".
  • Nanaji Deshmukh
    Born on October 11 in 1916 in a small town of Hingoli in Maharashtra, Nanaji Deshmukh represented Uttar Pradesh's Balrampur constituency in the Lok Sabha from 1977 to 1979.
    He also served as a nominated member of the Rajya Sabha from 1999 to 2005. Nanaji Deshmukh was honoured with the Padma Vibhushan earlier. One of the founding members of Bharatiya Jan Sangh, Nanaji Deshmukh established a chain of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh-inspired schools throughout India. He was associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh till his death at the age of 94 in 2010. The veteran also played a key role in the Jai Prakash (JP) movement against Emergency in 1974 and was instrumental in the formation of the Janata Party government in 1977.
