Abhinandan, Balakot pilots to get top military honours

  •  The government will announce military decorations for Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman for shooting down a Pakistani F-16 during a dogfight over the Line of Control on February 27, 2019 and the Mirage-2000 pilots involved in the operation a day before that to precision bomb a terror base in Pakistan's Balakot.
  • Varthaman is likely to be awarded a Vir Chakra for his exploits, and the five Mirage2000 fighter aces who dropped bombs on the terror facility of the Jaish-e-Mohammed, the Vayu Sena Medal for gallantry.

Odisha government wins awards for EWDS

  •  Odisha government has won the prestigious Technology Sabha Awards for its Early Warning Dissemination System. 
  • The EWDS has been chosen under the Unified Communications category, for the Technology Sabha Awards. 
  • The early warning dissemination system is the first of its kind automatic public address system in the country.

2019 Roman Magsaysay Award

  •  Senior Indian journalist Ravish Kumar was awarded this year's (2019) Ramon Magsaysay Award, regarded as the Asian version of the Nobel Prize.
  • Kumar who is NDTV India's senior executive editor is one of India's most influential TV journalists.
  • He is among five individuals who were declared winners of the award
  • The four other winners of the 2019 Ramon Magsaysay Award are Ko Swe Win from Myanmar, Angkhana Neelapaijit from Thailand, Raymundo Pujante Cayabyab from Philippines and Kim Jong-Ki from South Korea.
  • Established in 1957, the Ramon Magsaysay Award is Asia's highest honour.

Sudarsan Pattnaik Wins People's Choice Award in U.S.

  •  Renowned Indian sand artist and Padma Awardee Sudarsan Pattnaik won the People's Choice Award at a prestigious sand sculpting festival in the U.S., wowing the American public with his sculpture that highlighted the message of combating plastic pollution in oceans.
  • Mr. Pattnaik was among the 15 top sand artists selected from across the world to participate in the 2019 Revere Beach International Sand Sculpting Festival in Boston, Massachusetts. He won the People's Choice Award for his sand sculpture 'Stop Plastic Pollution, Save Our Ocean'.
  • The award-winning sculpture showed a turtle caught in a plastic bag and a fish with plastic trash such as slippers, bottles and glass inside its body.
  • The tail of the fish is in the mouth of a human, signifying how plastic pollution in the oceans is adversely impacting human beings also when they consume sea food.

Castrol Super Mechanic 2019

  • Sarvanakumar Subramaniam and Hardevsinh Jadeja emerged as winners of the Castrol Super Mechanic Contest 2019 in a glittering finale organized by Castrol India, the country's leading automotive and industrial lubricant manufacturing company.
  • Sarvanakumar Subramaniam from Tamil Nadu's Coimbatore was announced the winner in the bike category while Hardevsinh Jadeja from Morbi, Gujarat won in the car category. K Jayavel from Chennai, Tamil Nadu and Kishor Kalalpa Gatade from Kolhapur, Maharashtra emerged as runners-up in car and bike category respectively.
  • Over 1.27 lakh mechanics from across the country participated in the third edition of the Castrol Super Mechanic Contest and 40 of them competed in the final stages.
