Aswatha Narayana Bags Gold At World Skills Event In Russia, Creates History

  •  Aswatha Narayana became the first Indian to win gold at World Skills competition in Kazan city of Russia,  and created history.
  • A student of CV Raman College of Engineering, Bhubaneshwar, Aswatha bagged the gold in water technology competition held between August 23 and 27, 2019.
  •  The 25-year-old competed against 11 countries to win the medal. He was felicitated 'Best of Nation' amongst all the other Indian competitors.
  • Aswatha was a part of the 48-member contingent representing India in the world's biggest international vocational skills competition.  
  • Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik congratulated Aswatha on his commendable performance and appreciated his hard work and dedication.

Gagan Narang To Receive Rashtriya Khel Protsahan PuraskarĀ 

  •  On National Sports Day, Gagan Narang received yet another award.  Ram Nath Kovind will present to Narang the Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puraskar at the Arjuna Awards ceremony in New Delhi. 
  • But this one won't be for his sharpshooting skills. With gun in his hands, he has made India proud on many occasions.
  • From Commonwealth Games to Olympics, Narang has earned a lot of medals and his contribution has been duly recognized by the government multiple times, including Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award in 2010.  
  • For, it's a recognition of his contribution in the growth of his favourite sport and a reward for sacrifices he has made to realise this dream.

India Bags Four Medals In Worldskills Kazan Competition

  •  The Indian team created history by winning one gold, one silver and two bronze medals at the 45th WorldSkills Kazan 2019 competition, in Russia. It has been the country's best performance since it first participated at the event in 2007.
  • S Aswatha Narayana won the gold medal in water technology. Pranav Nutalapati won silver medal in web technologies. Sanjoy Pramanik and Shweta Ratanpura won one bronze medal each in Jewellery and graphic design technology. 

Kalinga-FCC Awards For Excellence In Journalism For 2019 Presented In New Delhi

  •  Journalists from media organisations such as Reuters, BBC, and Germany-based European Press Photo Agency (EPA) won big at the Kalinga-FCC Awards for Excellence in Journalism for 2019.
  • The awards were presented to the winners by former president Pranab Mukherjee. Teams of journalists from international news agency Reuters bagged two of the five top prizes.
  • The BBC of the UK, Germany-based European Press Photo Agency (EPA), and PBS News Hour of USA shared the other three awards.
  • The awards, the first of their kind in India, are aimed at encouraging extensive and informed coverage in the global media of India and seven other countries in South Asia that constitute the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) -- Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The region accounts for a fourth of the global population.
  • Each awardee received a cheque for Rs 1,00,000, a trophy, a medal and a certificate of merit.
  • The Print Journalist of the Year Award went to the nine-member Team Reuters for the exhaustive coverage of the Rohingya issue in Myanmar and Bangladesh.
  • The Digital Journalist of the Year Award went to another eight-member Team Reuters for the excellent coverage of pollution in India's capital New Delhi with detailed graphics. Harish Tyagi of EPA won the Photo Journalist of the Year Award for his painstaking photographic documentation of how pollution is killing River Yamuna.
  • Rakesh Nagar of PBS News Hour received the Video Journalist of the Year Award for 'Music in the Mountains', a documentary about how a Jesuit priest is bringing about change by teaching music to poor children in Kalimpong.

IPS Officer Aparna Kumar To Be Conferred Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award 2018

  •  IPS Officer Aparna Kumar will be honoured with the Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award 2018 in the 'Land adventure' category.
  • The names of the winners of Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Awards 2018 were announced by the government on August 27, 2019.

2. Late Shri Dipankar Ghosh- Land Adventure category
3. Manikandan K - Land Adventure category
4. Prabhat Raju Koli – Water Adventure category

  • The Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Awards are the highest national awards for adventure sports in India, at par with the Arjuna award.
  • The awards were conferred by the government based on the recommendations of the National Selection Committee.
  • The committee chaired by Secretary (Youth Affairs) had experts from the field of adventure as members.

ONGC CMD Honoured With Distinguished Fellowship Of IOD, 2019

  •  Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) Chairman and Managing Director (CMD), Shashi Shanker was honoured with the Distinguished Fellowship of the Institute of Directors (IOD), 2019 during the 29th Institute of Directors (IOD) Annual Day Ceremony.
  • The prestigious honour was conferred to Shanker on August 26, 2019 during the ceremony held in the national capital.
  • The Fellowship has been given in appreciation of his distinguished contribution to business and society.
  • The honour was bestowed to Shanker by Hardeep Singh Puri, Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs, Civil Aviation and Trade and Commerce.

Indian Girls Create An App To Connect Old-Age Homes And Orphanages, Win Tech Prize In US

  •  Five girls have developed a mobile app that connects children at orphanages with senior citizens in old-age homes, with their innovation fetching them a bronze medal at global tech competition in the US.
  • The app, called Maitri, is aimed at bringing together individuals suffering from loneliness and depression and those lacking the nurturing love of elderly role models, said the all-girl team "Tech Witches".
  • The app, available for free on Google playstore, also allows users to volunteer and donate to old-age homes and orphanages through it. The developers include Ananya Grover, Vanshika Yadav, Vasudha Sudhinder, Anushka Sharma and Arefa, all Class 12 students of Amity International School in Noida.

Ex-Manchester United Forward Eric Cantona To Receive UEFA President's Award

  •  Former Manchester United forward Eric Cantona will be presented the 2019 UEFA President's Award in recognition of his playing career and commitment to charitable causes after it.
  • The 53-year-old Frenchman will receive the award in Monaco during the Champions League group stage draw.

Martin Scorsese To Receive SBIFF's 14th Annual Kirk Douglas Award For Excellence InĀ Film

  •  Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese, whose latest film is the much-anticipated The Irishman, has been selected to receive the 14th annual Kirk Douglas Award For Excellence In Film from the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. 
  • The honor, which benefits SBIFF's year-round educational programs, will be presented on  November 14, 2019 at a Black Tie dinner at the Ritz Carlton Bacara.
  • Since 2006, the annual Kirk Douglas Award for Excellence in Film has been awarded to a lifelong contributor to cinema through their work in front of the camera, behind, or both.
