Indian Peacekeepers in South Sudan Awarded Medals For Service
Seventeen Indian peacekeepers deployed with the UN mission in South Sudan have been awarded medals in recognition of their service to the people in the world's youngest country.
The Indian police officers have served the UN and the people of South Sudan for almost a year. Their duties included protecting displaced civilians, community policing and building local police skills.
The 17 Indian men and women police officers were awarded the UN service medals during a special ceremony at the UN House in Juba.
India is among the largest troop contributing countries in the world to UN peacekeeping missions.
As of March 2019, India is the second highest troop contributor to the UNMISS, with 2,337 troops deployed with the mission.
In addition, India contributes 22 police personnel to the UNMISS.
Chhaya Sharma To Receive Asia Society Game Changer Award
Indian woman police officer Chhaya Sharma, who led the investigation into the brutal 2012 Nirbhaya gangrape, has been chosen along with six others for the 2019 Asia Society Game Changers award for redefining the role of female police officers.
The awards, which were announced by the city-based leading cultural organisation Asia Society will be presented at a special ceremony in October 2019.
Asia Society is the leading educational organization dedicated to promoting mutual understanding and strengthening partnerships among people, leaders and institutions of Asia and the United States in a global context.
Sharma, who serves as the deputy inspector general at the National Human Rights Commission of India, is among the awardees.
UAE Honours Outgoing Indian Envoy With Order Of Zayed II Award
The UAE has conferred the outgoing Indian Ambassador Navdeep Singh Suri with the First Class Order of Zayed II award, recognizing his efforts to strengthen the relationship and cooperation between the two nations.
His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan bestowed the award upon Suri, who has been serving as the Indian ambassador to the Gulf nation since October 2016.
During his tenure, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the UAE twice.
The Order of Zayed is the country's highest civil decoration named after Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.
UAE Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan presented the honour to Suri during a meeting in Abu Dhabi. Sheikh Abdullah also lauded his role in bolstering the UAE-India ties.

Geoffrey Boycott, Strauss Given Knighthoods
England cricket greats Geoffrey Boycott and Andrew Strauss have been given knighthoods by Theresa May in her resignation honours list.
Boycott and Strauss both received the honour for their services to sport after outstanding careers for England.
Former England and Middlesex batsman Strauss hit 7,037 runs in 100 Tests from 2004 to 2012.
Sir Geoffrey Boycott OBE is a retired cricketer, who formerly played cricket for Yorkshire and England.
Usha Khanna Confers with 'Lata Mangeshkar Award
Veteran music director Usha Khanna has been conferred the Maharashtra government's "Lata Mangeshkar Award" for the year 2019-20, Cultural Affairs Minister Vinod Tawde announced.
The award, instituted in 1993, has been given to senior musicians for their contribution to the industry.
The award, named after the legendary singer, consists of Rs 5,00,000 cash, a citation and a memento.
Khanna, 78, is one of the few women musicians in the Indian film industry who carved out a niche for herself in the otherwise male-dominated field.

UNESCO King Sejong Literacy Prize
The 2019 UNESCO King Sejong Literacy Prize, which is sponsored by the government of South Korea, was awarded to:
'National Office of Literacy and Education for Adults' in Algeria for its 'National Strategy for Multilingual Literacy' programme.
Textile Fibres and Development Company' (SODEFITEX) in Senegal for its 'Functional literacy and follow-up vocational training for farmers in southern Senegal in national languages' programme.

Visitor's Award 2019
Recipients of Visitor's Awards 2019 for research in various fields were announced by President's Secretariat. The award would be conferred by President Ram Nath Kovind at an event to be held at Rashtrapati Bhavan later.
The Awards will be presented for Research in- Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences, Physical Sciences, Biological Sciences and Technology Development.
