Pioneers Of Lithium-Ion Battery Win 2019 Nobel Chemistry Prize

  •  Scientists John Goodenough, Stanley Whittingham and Akira Yoshino won the 2019 Nobel Prize for Chemistry for the development of lithium-ion batteries, an important technology in enabling the world to move away from fossil fuels.
  • American Goodenough, at 97, becomes the oldest winner of a Nobel prize. He shared the award equally with Whittingham from Britain and Yoshino of Japan.
  • This rechargeable battery laid the foundation of wireless electronics such as mobile phones and laptops, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said in a statement on awarding the 9 million Swedish crown ($906,000) prize.

Pepsico India wins US Award For Saving More Than 17 Billion Litres Of Water

  •  The United States named PepsiCo India for the 2019 Secretary of State's Award for Corporate Excellence (ACE), recognising its efforts to save more than 17 billion litres of water through community water programs and positively impacting 60,000 community members.
  • Established in 1999, the ACE recognises US companies that promote and uphold high standards as responsible members of their communities where they do business.
  • Other recipients of the award are Chambers Federation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Procter and Gamble Asia Pacific in Singapore, and Agilis Partners in Uganda.

Squadrons Which Participated In Balakot Airstrike Awarded

  •  Two squadrons and one signal unit of the Indian Air Force that were part of the Balakot operation were decorated with citations.
  • On the occasion of 87th Indian Air Force Day, Air Chief Marshal R K S Bhadauria awarded citations to 51 Squadron, the 9 Squadron and the 601 Signal Unit for their role in the airstrike on terror camps in Pakistan's Balakot in February, 2019.
  • Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman and fighter pilots, who were a part of the Balakot operation, also participated in the flypast.
  • Varthaman was leading the bison formation of MiG 21 aircraft. The fighter pilot had downed an enemy jet during an aerial combat with Pakistan in February 2019 and was held captive for three days.
  • The Srinagar-based 51 Squadron, to which Varthaman was attached during the Balakot strike, was also involved in thwarting the retaliatory attack by the Pakistan Air Force.

Nobel Prize In Medicine Awarded For New Discovery On How Humans Respond To Oxygen

  •  The 2019 Nobel Prize in Medicine has been jointly awarded to William Kaelin Jr., Sir Peter Ratcliffe and Gregg Semenza for their pioneering research into how human cells respond to changing oxygen levels.
  • Announcing the prize at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, the Nobel committee said that the trio's discoveries have paved the way for "promising new strategies to fight anaemia, cancer and many other diseases."
  • Randall Johnson, prize committee member, described the trio's work as a "textbook discovery."

Nobel Prize In Physics Awarded For Discoveries In Cosmology

  •  Nobel Prize 2019 for Physics has been announced. Three scientists, James Peebles, Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz have won the Prize for their contribution to the understanding of the evolution of the universe and earth's place in the cosmos.
  • One half of the award was given to James Peebles for theoretical discoveries in physical cosmology and the other half jointly to Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz for the discovery of an exoplanet orbiting a solar-type star.
  • They will share a 9-million kronor cash award, a gold medal and a diploma. The laureates will receive them at a ceremony in Stockholm on December 10, 2019.

IFS Officer Ramesh Pandey Selected For Asia Environmental Enforcement Award By UNEP

  •  Senior Indian Forest Service officer Ramesh Pandey has been selected for the prestigious Asia Environmental Enforcement Award by the United Nations Environment Programme.
  • The 1996-batch IFS officer, posted as Chief Conservator Forests in Lucknow and Secretary, UP State Bio-diversity Board, is known for his investigation and intelligence gathering on poachers.
  • Pandey will receive the award on November 13, 2019 at the United Nations Conference Centre in Bangkok.  

Vedanta Wins Golden Peacock Global Award For Excellence In Corporate Governance - 2019

  •  Vedanta has been bestowed with the coveted Golden Peacock GLOBAL award for excellence in Corporate Governance 2019 instituted by Institute of Directors, Delhi (IOD), in recognition of its exemplary commitment towards corporate governance practices.
  • The award will be presented at the 'Golden Peacock Awards Presentation Ceremony', to be held on 14 November 2019, at London (UK) in the presence of a distinguished gathering of business leaders during IOD's 19th Annual London Global Convention on Corporate Governance & Sustainability" and Global Business Meet.

22-Yr-Old Honoured By President For Teaching Poor Kids For Free

  •  A 22-year-old IIT-Roorkee student Anant Vashistha, who taught underprivileged students from a nearby village for free, received a gold medal from President Ram Nath Kovind.
  • The 22-year-old student, who completed his B.Tech in Production and Industrial Engineering this year, won the prestigious Dr Jai Krishna Gold Medal for excellent contribution in the field of youth leadership amongst students admitted through JEE.
  • President Kovind felicitated him with the medal during IIT Roorkee's 19th annual convocation where eight other students were also awarded.

Tannishtha Chatterjee wins Asia Star Award at Busan 2019 for Roam Rome Mein

  •  Tannishtha Chatterjee was awarded the Asia Star Award at the Busan International Film Festival for her directorial debut Roam Rome Mein. The film stars Tannishtha and Nawazuddin Siddiqui in the lead roles. 
  • The award was jointly presented by Marie Claire and BIFF in the presence of the cast and crew. 
  • Roam Rome Mein also stars Valentina Corti, Isha Talwar, Francesco Apolloni, UrBano Barberini, Pamela Villoresi, and Andrea Scarduzio. The film has sound designed by four-time National award winner Bishwadeep Chatterjee and music by Alokananda Dasgupta. 

Bhumi Pednekar Wins Face of Asia Award at Busan International Film Festival

  •  Actress Bhumi Pednekar has won the Face of Asia Award at the 24th edition of the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), and she is very "proud of it".
  • Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare, starring Konkona Sensharma and Bhumi Pednekar, had its world premiere at the Busan International Film Festival on 3 October, 2019. 
  • The 24th Busan International Film Festival will be held from October 3 to 12 October 2019 at the Busan Cinema Center. A total of 303 films from 85 countries will be screened at the festival, including 120 world premieres and 30 international premieres.

President Kovind presents Vayoshreshtha Samman-2019

  •  President Ram Nath Kovind conferred the Vayoshreshtha Samman-2019 on the eminent senior citizens and institutions in New Delhi in recognition of their services towards the cause of the elderly persons.
  • Vayoshreshtha awards are instituted by the Social Justice and Empowerment Ministry and are presented as part of the celebration of the International Day of Older Persons on 1st October.
